John McCain
Town Hall Meeting
07/09/08

TRANSCRIPT:
JOHN MCCAIN: "I did see a person over here with a 'no nukes' sign so maybe we can't start with you. Because obviously you know I am a supporter of nuclear power. [...]"

QUESTIONER: "[...] I live here in Portsmouth. And my father also worked in the Piketon plant and he also died young of cancer. He had 4 cancers. My mother died of cancer as well. And I feel strongly about getting the Piketon plant cleaned up and bringing alternative energy industry into Portsmouth [...] We've done this for 50 years. We deserve better. We don't want our young people to continue to have to work in a highly toxic industry. And I believe that a lot of people here probably feel the same way and are afraid to say anything. Because I know the outcome in my personal life has been very detrimental to me in fighting this nuclear industry."

MCCAIN: "I know I speak on behalf of all of us [...] and extend our sympathy at the loss of your parents. There's no way that I can provide proper consolation except to say to you that I believe that nuclear power is and can be safe. [...] We have sailed Navy ships around the world for more than 60 years with nuclear power plants on them. There has never been any recorded case that I know of that someone was either injured or killed or had any effects of, of those nuclear power plants. I know that there's been Three Mile Island. And we know about Chernoble. But I do believe that nuclear power is safe. [...] But the evidence that I have that I'd like to share with you, is that nuclear power is safe. And it is, I think, a vital part of our nation's energy future[...]

QUESTIONER: "One of the things that I've been striving for is to make sure that workers that go into the Piketon site are protected, and I haven't been able to get that affirmation from the NRC or the EPA or any of the DOE or any of the groups that are in charge of that cleanup and that site. And I think that's one of the things that many people are concerned about here.

MCCAIN: "Well I will (1) try to get that information from you, (2) myself try to contact the nuclear regulatory [...] commission and any other oversight organization and get the information [...] I promise you I will learn, and I will read the information that you send me, and I will act on it as I think would be appropriate."

To: Mrs. George W. Bush, Mrs. Richard Cheney
From: Bellevue

We regret to inform you that your spouses are suffering from something we call Psychotic Delusionus Swaggerus Idioticus...

President Bush on Wednesday said something demonstrably false and inflammatory about Iran -- asserting that the Iranian government has "declared they want to have a nuclear weapon to destroy people."
The Iranians have never done any such thing -- and for Bush to say so at a time of great tension between the two countries is bizarre at best.

So why did he say it? Was he actively trying to misrepresent the situation? Was it just a slip of the tongue? Or does he believe it, despite the abundant evidence to the contrary? [...]

And yet, as disturbing as the third possibility is -- that Bush is operating in an alternate reality -- it's supported by this simple fact: He's said almost exactly the same thing at least once before.

Mrs. Bush, Mrs. Cheney, the urgency for restraint and the employment of straight jackets cannot be stressed enough. We assure you, we used only the best quality product, the latest models, and have made every effort to meet with their fashion consultants before choosing the hue we like to call "Warmonger Ecru"...

In short, it seems clear that Bush remains convinced that the Iranians continue to pursue nuclear weapons. Does he also somehow believe they've acknowledged this publicly? Or that they may as well have? Is this the kind of stuff that Cheney -- often the last person to talk to Bush before important decisions -- whispers in his ear?

It's worth getting Bush on the record about exactly how he understands the facts here.

And -- especially after the suspicious dismissal of Admiral William J. "Fox" Fallon earlier this month, and given Cheney's conviction that the legislative branch can't limit the executive's war-making powers -- it may be worth asking ourselves if there's anything that would prevent the president and vice president from acting on their delusions.

Thank you for your understanding. Visiting hours are alternate Sundays, 8 am through 12 noon, at which time we force feed them Freedom Fries as a reward for participating in "Waterboarding for Military Wannabes". They seem to genuinely enjoy their time together, and we were especially pleased to grant their request to be handcuffed together during that particular activity.

Yours very sincerely,

Dr. Laffy, Psyche Ward 13, Bellevue Psychiatric Hospital

---

Intelligence Reform and The Iran National Intelligence Estimate with Thomas Fingar.

The debate over how to deal with Iran received a jolt late last year when the U.S. government's intelligence report concluded that Iran ended its nuclear weapons program four years ago. Don't miss this chance to hear from the intelligence expert who is the principal author of the report that "rewrote the book" on Iran - The Commonwealth Club of California

Dr. Thomas Fingar was Assistant Secretary of the State Department's Bureau of Intelligence and Research (INR) from July 2004 until May 2005 when he was named Deputy Director of National Intelligence for Analysis & Chairman, National Intelligence Council. While at the State Department he served as Acting Assistant Secretary for Intelligence and Research (2003-2004 and 2000-2001), Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary (2001-2003), Deputy Assistant Secretary for Analysis (1994-2000), Director of the Office of Analysis for East Asia and the Pacific (1989-1994), and Chief of the China Division (1986-1989).

His intelligence career began in 1970 as the senior German linguist in the Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Intelligence, USAREUR & 7th Army in Heidelberg, Germany. Between 1975 and 1986 he held a number of positions at Stanford University, including Senior Research Associate in the Center for International Security and Arms Control, and Director of the University's U.S.-China Relations Program. Other previous positions include assignment to the National Academy of Sciences as Co-Director of the U.S.-China Education Clearinghouse, adviser to the Congressional Office of Technology Assessment, and consultant to numerous U.S. Government agencies and private sector organizations.

Dr. Fingar is a graduate of Cornell University (B.A. in Government and History, 1968), and Stanford University (M.A., 1969 and Ph.D., 1977 both in Political Science). He is a career member of the Senior Executive Service. His principal foreign languages are Chinese and German. Dr. Fingar has published dozens of books and articles, mostly on aspects of Chinese politics and policymaking.

Kitty Hawk - a 1,000ft supercarrier with 4,500 personnel on board.

I'm dumbstruck that they're dumbstruck. Are you dumbstruck?

By the time it surfaced the 160ft Song Class diesel-electric attack submarine is understood to have sailed within viable range for launching torpedoes or missiles at the carrier.

According to senior Nato officials the incident caused consternation in the U.S. Navy.

I'd be all consternatey too. Nobody likes a sneak. Especially one with nukes.

The Americans had no idea China's fast-growing submarine fleet had reached such a level of sophistication, or that it posed such a threat.

One Nato figure said the effect was "as big a shock as the Russians launching Sputnik" - a reference to the Soviet Union's first orbiting satellite in 1957 which marked the start of the space age.

We had no idea? First we're surprised that they came within striking distance, and then we're surprised that they've come so far? Why is it we didn't know about this again?

The lone Chinese vessel slipped past at least a dozen other American warships which were supposed to protect the carrier from hostile aircraft or submarines.

And the rest of the costly defensive screen, which usually includes at least two U.S. submarines, was also apparently unable to detect it.

Maybe if we had more resources, this kind of thing wouldn't happen. Maybe if we'd stop spending all those billions upon billions on a bloody, senseless occupation, we could devote more time, manpower, and money to, oh I dunno, actual defense?? Maybe if we weren't asleep at the wheel, our attention diverted to idiotic, violent power plays, we'd be--what's the word?--prepared.

The People's Liberation Army Navy's submarine fleet includes at least two nuclear-missile launching vessels.

Iran doesn't have nukes, but BushCo wants to bomb them. The U.S.S. Kitty Hawk is staring Chinese nukes in the face and didn't suspect a thing.

Commodore Stephen Saunders, editor of Jane's Fighting Ships, and a former Royal Navy anti-submarine specialist, said the U.S. had paid relatively little attention to this form of warfare since the end of the Cold War.

He said: "It was certainly a wake-up call for the Americans.

Pssst...Americans in charge.
