John McCain
Town Hall Meeting
Allentown, PA 04/30/08

TRANSCRIPT:
QUESTIONER: ". . . What are you going to do for the next generation . . . to make it affordable to go into nursing and to want to?"

JOHN MCCAIN: "I think the same is true with other, uh, ah, uh, areas of the medical profession. I think we have to do a lot more to encourage young Americans to become doctors, nurses, uh, all of the care providers. Uh, all of those individuals who are in our health care system because quite often in the name of economy, we deprive these individuals, who are all part of the health care system from the income that they otherwise earn and deserve . . . so, um, I, I, I think we need to offer incentives and I think we need to, uh, do things like in exchange for service, uh, whether it be on an Indian Reservation or whether it be in the military or whether it be in other ways of public service, we should provide those incentives. But at the same time I think we should make scholarships available and affordable. And I also think that there are times when we really have to provide greater rewards for entering into your profession and I would be more than eager to hear your suggestions as to how we can do that because it is well known that there will be a shortage of nurses in America. It's just an undeniable fact. . ."

The most important piece of legislation in America today, with nearly 100 cosponsors in the house, H.R.676 is the only health care bill that will truly reform our tragically broken health care system. This is the bill that your insurance company doesn't want you to know about. This is the bill that presidential candidates (except Kucinich) are afraid to talk about, presumably because they like to keep getting campaign contributions from the insurance industry. What would you think about a health care system that actually works for everybody, costs billions of dollars less, provides greater coverage, truly protects you from financial ruin due to medical bills, improves quality, increases innovation, and returns medical decisions to you and your doctor instead of some claims adjuster at an insurance company 1,000 miles away. 31 cents of every health care dollar spent is wasted on administrative expenses and insurer profits in the US system. This is why the US spends double what other industialized nations spend on health care yet has worse outcomes. We need to save that money and spend it on better health care for you, me, and all Americans. Our system is sick and dying, and this is the cure. This footage was take primarily from Congressional testimony given earlier in 2007. To support H.R.676, contact your congressman.
Six medical staff, sentenced to death in Libya for infecting more than 400 children with the HIV virus will hear the results of their final appeal on Wednesday.

But on the eve of the appeal, a senior Libyan doctor has told Al Jazeera he's convinced the children were infected deliberately.

The medics have always protested their innocence. Al Jazeera's Amr El-Kahky has this exclusive report.

I am in DC for the Take Back America conference, which just ended. It was a terrific, energizing, and exciting conference of thousands of progressives who came together to plan and organize for the years ahead.

We did a workshop on the success of FOX Attacks which has already set off a firestorm on the Drudge Report. How dare we have a blueprint for going after Fox! Damn right. And we are going to continue. Check back here on Tuesday.

Last night, I was able to go to the DC opening of SiCKO. It was absolutely wonderful. Both moving, emotional, funny, and important. No one can see the movie and ever again think our health care is "okay." Michael has used visits to other countries to great effect, making crystal clear that it can be done here, it should be done here, and we have to make sure that it is done here.

The man who was going to "terminate" the special interests is breaking records in raising money from special interests! Including nearly half a million dollars from Fox News Channel parent company News Corp USA. $26 million in 2004, and he's already vowed to raise $50 million for his special election ballot initiatives.

Larry Noble, executive director of the Center for Responsive Politics: "It's masterful. One of the things Arnold Schwarzenegger has done very well is to declare everybody else's big donors as special interests and his as interested in good government."

Who does Schwarzenegger consider a special interest? NURSES! Yes. He's going to "kick their butts."
