With the US economy slowing down, businesses here are opening their doors to rich overseas investors. But as Al Jazeera's John Terrett reports, a combination of huge corporate losses, the weak dollar and the threat of a recession means many companies need foreign cash just to keep going.

World-renowned design and innovation firm IDEO uses first-hand observations to inform and inspire its work. As it did with the groundbreaking observational primer Thoughtless Acts?, IDEO once again brings its instructive methods to bear on the world around us, this time with an eye toward the inherent but unheralded presence of modern engineering. By observing the built environment we walk through every day the often-overlooked details of buildings and roads, the joinings and interfaces of our infrastructure we can learn to see the world as engineers do, and adapt this perspective to critical thinking. Through simple pictures of how objects and environments behave over time, Everyday Engineering invites anyone in creative fields, business, and design to see the world through IDEO's eyes.

Andrew Burroughs has been a consulting design engineer for twenty years-fifteen of those with IDEO, arguably the foremost design and innovation consultancy in the world. Since 2004, Andrew has led IDEO's Chicago office. IDEO uses first-hand observations to inform and inspire the design of delightful and useful products, services, and environments.

This event took place at the Google NY office on October 2, 2007.

THE BLIND SIDE: Evolution of a Game focuses on a young man who will one day be among the most highly paid athletes in the NFL. When we first meet him, he is one of thirteen children by a mother addicted to crack; he does not know his real name, his father, his birthday, or any of the things a child might learn in school—such as, say, how to read or write. Nor has he ever touched a football.

What changes? He takes up football, and school, after a rich, Evangelical, Republican family plucks him from the mean streets. Their love is the first great force that alters the world's perception of the boy, whom they adopt. The second force is the evolution of professional football itself into a game where the quarterback must be protected at any cost. Our protagonist turns out to be the priceless combination of size, speed, and agility necessary to guard the quarterback's greatest vulnerability: his blind side.

Author of the bestsellers Liar's Poker, The New New Thing, and Moneyball, Michael Lewis writes regularly for the New York Times Magazine and Bloomberg News. He lives in Berkeley, California.

This event took place on September 18. 2007 at the Google New York office. This was Michael's second visit to Google, but his first to NY. He is interviewed by Google's own Khee Lee.

Former mayor of New York City and current Republican Presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani discusses his views on healthcare reform.

-----

New York mayor Rudolph Giuliani spoke of reinvention, reinvigoration, and strategies to bring greater freedom to Americans when he spoke on Monday at a meeting of the Hoover Institution Board of Overseers in Washington, D.C.

Complimenting the Hoover Institution on its mission and work, Guiliani told the 250 overseers and guests in attendance that "[Hoover] had made it possible for a whole new way of looking at government. You have given us intellectual depth and created change in the way we look at the interplay between government and the private sector."

Giuliani discussed the need for the Republican Party to remake and redefine itself in order to meet the challenges of the 21st century.

"In redefining ourselves, we have to give people more freedom," he said.

He also discussed at length the careful and strategic management of taxation, education reforms, and entitlement reforms, all of which can and should provide greater freedom to citizens, he said. - Hoover Institution
