Meet the Bloggers: McCain's Costly Environmental Flip-Flops

While soaring gas prices and the energy crisis are major concerns for Americans, this economic debate is inextricably linked to the environment. How can we get our country off a crippling dependence on costly oil without considering environmentally safe energy alternatives? This was the topic of Friday's Meet the Bloggers, in which environmental journalist Simran Sethi spoke with show host Cenk Uygur about sustainability, as well as the battle between Big Oil and innovation.

Sethi addressed the urgent need to create a green economy, and she recommended tapping into the diversity of natural resources in our country. Sethi suggested that energy independence is possible if adequate measures are taken immediately, which is why the upcoming election is all the more crucial.

Friday's show came in conjunction with the launch of our video, McCain's Green Economy: Drill, Baby, Drill, which we partnered with the League of Conservation Voters to produce. As the title suggests, Drill, Baby, Drill reveals McCain's deep ties to Big Oil. Specifically, McCain has over 22 Big Oil lobbyists advising him, and he received over $1 million dollars from Big Oil for his recent flip-flop on off-shore drilling. But as Meet the Bloggers guests Kevin Grandia (DeSmogBlog.com), Brad Johnson (ThinkProgress.org) and Kate Sheppard (Grist.org) pointed out, McCain's abysmal environmental record goes far beyond his recent flip-flops.

QUESTIONER: [...] I'm not sure what you think the impact to our environment is based on [offshore drilling].

JOHN MCCAIN: [...] I have—I'm aware that off the coast of Louisiana and Texas there are oil rigs as we well know and those rigs have survived very successfully, the impacts of hurricanes (Hurricane Katrina as far as Louisiana is concerned). There are methods of drilling now, which are on a slant, which also can reach into existing or undiscovered oil assets and other places.

There is dramatically improved technology in this area and I'm not saying that there will never be another oil spill. California: they still remember the Santa Barbara experience and, of course, all of us remember Exxon-Valdez, but I think the technology and the safety is there today that would give us great confidence that we would be able to exploit these offshore resources and still maintain environmental safety [...], but I also think, my friends that, if you send $700 billion overseas every year and some of that money ends up in the hands of a terrorist organization, you are also running a risk.

You're also running a risk of one of these terrorist organizations doing—committing a terrorist act in the United States of America and some of our vulnerable areas obviously are energy supplies so I think we have to kind of balance all of these priorities as well. [...]

QUESTIONER: I would just like to see more emphasis on our renewable resources that we have out there. [...]

MCCCAIN: [...] I'm supportive of and the government is doing some pure research and development on a lot of this technology, wind, tide, solar, and others, but I also—and this is where Mr. [T. Boone] Pickens and I disagree a little bit—I don't think we can rely on those to be as much of the solution as some people think.

We all love solar. Is there anybody that doesn't love solar power? But when we look at the actual contributions, compared with the increased demand for energy that's gonna be part of American in the next 20 years, it does not meet those demands, much less the existing requirements that we have. [...]

The Compromise "Drill Anywhere" Plan

Senator McCain and the Republicans in Congress are calling Senator Obama and the Democrats environmental wimps for refusing to allow the oil industry to drill in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, environmentally sensitive offshore areas and anywhere else they please. The Republicans are claiming that the Democrats don't care about Joe Sixpack, who now has to pay $4 a gallon for his gas. Nor do they care that most of this oil is now imported.

In addition to concerns about the environment, one major reason that Democrats oppose drilling is that Joe Sixpack will never notice the effect of any oil recovered from these areas, even if we did allow drilling. According to independent experts such as the Energy Information Agency, there is too little oil in the offshore protected areas to have any noticeable impact on gas prices.

In other words, we are not debating about helping Joe Sixpack pay for his gas. We are only arguing over whether to put environmentally sensitive areas at risk for nothing. The Republican claims about the impact of drilling on oil prices simply are not true.

JOHN MCCAIN: Quite rightly, I believe, we confer a special status on some areas of our country that are best left undisturbed. When America set aside the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, we called it a "refuge" for a reason.

But the stakes are high for our citizens and for our economy. And with gasoline running at more than four bucks a gallon, many do not have the luxury of waiting on the far-off plans of futurists and politicians. We have proven oil reserves of at least 21 billion barrels in the United States. But a broad federal moratorium stands in the way of energy exploration and production. And I believe it is time for the federal government to lift these restrictions and to put our own reserves to use.

JOHN MCCAIN: "I don't agree. In fact I met with oil executives just a few days ago in California -- as some call it Cal-i-fornia -- and the fact is that we can, using existing facilities, expand our oil production within months, according to these executives. And the fact that if we go offshore and if we find, as I'm confident we will, additional reserves of oil, that will have a beneficial effect. That is economics: that if you have a greater supply, that it has an effect on the price of whatever it is. And the fact is that in my view and that of oil company executives that I've talked to--the people that actually do it, not those that comment on television, but those that actually do it--we could, in a very short time, have a beneficial effect as we bridge the gap between our dependence on foreign oil and becoming energy independent [...] So I disagree with those experts and I've talked to the actual people that do the work, that are in the business that say within months and certainly within a very short time, we could have additional oil supply for this nation. So we ought to drill now."
