As global oil prices continue to slide investors want to know whether the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (Opec) will cut production.

Opec members are split on the issue while some economists predict that oil prices will rise again.

Arab states hit by rising oil prices - 06 May 2008

Oil has risen to yet another record high - just shy of $121 dollars a barrel.

One knock on effect is that some Arab countries are removing state subsidies, which are costing billions of dollars a year.

Jordan removed fuel subsidies in February and, since then, oil prices have shot up by 82 per cent.

Syria too is cutting subsidies, trying to soften the blow with a 25% hike in wages.

And now Egypt has announced a 40 to 50 percent hike in fuel prices - just two days after saying wages would go up by a third.

Mmmm, remember the good old days, when oil was a measly $108 a barrel? So do I! But it's just a distant memory now, fading more quickly than Spitzer's career.

Crude oil prices continued a record-breaking climb today that pushed it past $109 a barrel, while the price of regular unleaded gasoline at the pump came within half a cent of its all-time high.
A White House announcement that Vice President Cheney would probably ask Saudi Arabia to boost oil output during a trip to the Middle East next week did nothing to blunt a run-up in prices that yesterday added $3 to the cost of a barrel.
As the rising cost of crude oil trickles down to the gasoline pump, fuel prices are siphoning cash away from other consumer spending, making it harder to revive the flagging U.S. economy and putting pressure on the Bush administration. It also siphoned more money out of the country: The Commerce Department reported today that the U.S. trade deficit jumped in January to $58.2 billion, compared to $57.9 billion in December, as a record, $27.1 billion monthly bill for imported crude helped offset an increase in U.S. exports.

Gasoline prices were poised Monday to set a new record at the pump, having surged to within half a cent of their record high of $3.227 a gallon. Oil prices, meanwhile, surged above $108 to a new inflation-adjusted record and their fifth new high in the last six sessions on an upbeat report on wholesale inventories.

The national average price of a gallon of gas rose 0.7 cent overnight to $3.222 a gallon, 69 cents higher than one year ago, according to AAA and the Oil Price Information Service. Last May, prices peaked at $3.227 as surging demand and a string of refinery outages raised concerns about supplies.

That record will likely be left in the dust soon as gas prices accelerate toward levels that could approach $4 a gallon, though most analysts believe prices will peak below that psychologically significant mark. In its last forecast, released last month, the Energy Department said prices will likely peak around $3.40 a gallon this spring; a new forecast is due Tuesday.
