Barack Obama cosponsored legislation that would expand federal jurisdiction to include violent hate crimes perpetrated because of race, color, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, gender identity, or physical disability. As a state senator, Obama passed tough legislation that made hate crimes and conspiracy to commit them against the law.</p> <p>► Fight Workplace Discrimination: Barack Obama supports the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, and believes that our anti-discrimination employment laws should be expanded to include sexual orientation and gender identity. While an increasing number of employers have extended benefits to their employees' domestic partners, discrimination based on sexual orientation in the workplace occurs with no federal legal remedy. Obama also sponsored legislation in the Illinois State Senate that would ban employment discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation.</p> <p>► Support Full Civil Unions and Federal Rights for LGBT Couples: Barack Obama supports full civil unions that give same-sex couples legal rights and privileges equal to those of married couples. Obama also believes we need to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act and enact legislation that would ensure that the 1,100+ federal legal rights and benefits currently provided on the basis of marital status are extended to same-sex couples in civil unions and other legally-recognized unions. These rights and benefits include the right to assist a loved one in times of emergency, the right to equal health insurance and other employment benefits, and property rights.</p> <p>► Oppose a Constitutional Ban on Same-Sex Marriage: Barack Obama voted against the Federal Marriage Amendment in 2006 which would have defined marriage as between a man and a woman and prevented judicial extension of marriage-like rights to same-sex or other unmarried couples.</p> <p>► Repeal Don't Ask-Don't Tell: Barack Obama agrees with former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff John Shalikashvili and other military experts that we need to repeal the "don't ask, don't tell" policy. The key test for military service should be patriotism, a sense of duty, and a willingness to serve. Discrimination should be prohibited. The U.S. government has spent millions of dollars replacing troops kicked out of the military because of their sexual orientation. Additionally, more than 300 language experts have been fired under this policy, including more than 50 who are fluent in Arabic. Obama will work with military leaders to repeal the current policy and ensure it helps accomplish our national defense goals.</p> <p>► Expand Adoption Rights: Barack Obama believes that we must ensure adoption rights for all couples and individuals, regardless of their sexual orientation. He thinks that a child will benefit from a healthy and loving home, whether the parents are gay or not.</p> <p>► Promote AIDS Prevention: In the first year of his presidency, Barack Obama will develop and begin to implement a comprehensive national HIV/AIDS strategy that includes all federal agencies. The strategy will be designed to reduce HIV infections, increase access to care and reduce HIV-related health disparities. Obama will support common sense approaches including age-appropriate sex education that includes information about contraception, combating infection within our prison population through education and contraception, and distributing contraceptives through our public health system. Obama also supports lifting the federal ban on needle exchange, which could dramatically reduce rates of infection among drug users. Obama has also been willing to confront the stigma -- too often tied to homophobia -- that continues to surround HIV/AIDS. Keep digging!</p> <p>Ok, I am going to be quite honest with the American public. I have nothing against anyone who is Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual or Transgender. So when I heard about whats going on in California and how the Religious Right got involved, I had to answer. </p> <p>The American GBLT community is fighting back, and I give my full support to having their rights being heard.</p> <p>The Supreme Court of California overturned the gay marriage ban in 2008. A conservative group with the help of the Church of Latter Days Saints had pushed a proposition to void the marriages and reinforce the ban on gay marriage. </p> <p>The religious right of the Republican Party and The DUMB Right are showing their love to the people.</p> <p>As a straight person, I respect marriage. I would one day settle down with a wife and kids someday. But in the meantime, I will keep fighting for the truth and open the door to America.</p> <p>So why is it wrong for a gay couple to be married? They are not hurting me! </p> <p>They want to live their lives in peace. I have no problem with it!</p> <p>I feel that in an age where the old style is becoming old, America still has hurdles to climb in order to make freedom, not just a slogan. It has to mean something.</p> <p>Conservatives love to claim their "patriotism", "proud of their country", "liberty", and "freedom" as their words.</p> <p>They want focus on "culture war" issues instead of trying to fix the economy, end the wars, lower food, gas and heating oil prices, home foreclosure, Wall Street turmoil and of course job loss! They rather continue to "out of touch" with the rest of the country. In which it may prove fail to those incumbent Republicans facing re-election. </p> <p>2010 is another Midterm Election, wonder what kind of impact this will have on the upcoming elections?</p> <p>Thanks for viewing. They want what you want -- a chance to be a little less alone in the world.</p> <p>Only now you are saying to them -- no. You can't have it on these terms. Maybe something similar. If they behave. If they don't cause too much trouble. You'll even give them all the same legal rights -- even as you're taking away the legal right, which they already had. A world around them, still anchored in love and marriage, and you are saying, no, you can't marry. What if somebody passed a law that said you couldn't marry?</p> <p>I keep hearing this term "re-defining" marriage.</p> <p>If this country hadn't re-defined marriage, black people still couldn't marry white people. Sixteen states had laws on the books which made that illegal... in 1967. 1967.</p> <p>The parents of the President-Elect of the United States couldn't have married in nearly one third of the states of the country their son grew up to lead. But it's worse than that. If this country had not "re-defined" marriage, some black people still couldn't marry...black people. It is one of the most overlooked and cruelest parts of our sad story of slavery. Marriages were not legally recognized, if the people were slaves. Since slaves were property, they could not legally be husband and wife, or mother and child. Their marriage vows were different: not "Until Death, Do You Part," but "Until Death or Distance, Do You Part." John McCain's attacks on Obama as Un-American are provoking people to inject racism in this campaign.</p> <p>Police say a campaign volunteer confessed to making up a story that a mugger attacked her and cut the letter B in her face after seeing her McCain bumper sticker.</p> <p>Pittsburgh police said a 20-year-old woman who originally said she was robbed and assaulted at knifepoint in Bloomfield because of her political views made the story up.</p> <p>Ashley Todd -- who has a backward letter "B" scratched into her right cheek -- confessed to faking the story and will be charged with filing a false report, Assistant Police Chief Maurita Bryant said at a news conference Friday.</p> <p>Todd, of College Station, Texas, admitted there was no robbery or attacker and said she had prior mental health problems, according to Bryant.</p> <p>It's not yet clear whether Todd's face was mutilated by her, or if she had somebody else do it, because a police report states that she told them she can't remember.</p> <p>Todd said she was driving around in her car, looked in her rear-view mirror, saw a "B," and the first thing she thought of was Democratic presidential nominee Sen. Barack Obama. <br />Police tell KDKA that a campaign volunteer has now confessed to making up a story that a mugger attacked her and cut the letter B in her face after seeing her John McCain bumper sticker. But in Baghdad over the weekend there was a different kind of surge. Tens of thousands of protesters marched through the streets to oppose a renewal of the Status of Forces Agreement, which would extend the US presence in Iraq for three more years until the end of 2012. For members of parliament the stakes are high. Provincial and national elections will be held next year and the US presence is highly unpopular throughout the country, excluding perhaps the Kurdish north. </p> <p>The demonstration also clearly shows that Muqtada al-Sadr remains an enormously powerful figure in Iraq capable of mobilizing thousands of Iraqi people in opposition to the US occupation. A statement from al-Sadr read at the rally called on parliament to vote down the pact: “I reject and condemn the continuation of the presence of the occupation force, and its bases on our beloved land,” the letter said. Sadr called the pact “shameful for Iraq.” </p> <p>No one writing in English today understands Iraqi politics better than Patrick Cockburn, the author of two recent books on Iraq: The Occupation and Muqtada: Muqtada al-Sadr, the Shia Revival, and the Struggle for Iraq.
