Complete video at: fora.tv

CBS News and Sports President Sean McManus recalls his father's reporting on the terrorist attacks at the 1972 Olympics, and comments on instances in which sports and news collide.

-----

Sean McManus discusses Sports and News Television in America as part of Sport in America during the 2008 Chautauqua Institution morning lecture series.

Sean McManus was named president of CBS Sports in 1996 and president of CBS News in 2005. He is only the second person to hold both division titles simultaneously.

As president of CBS Sports, McManus led the organization's efforts in acquiring broadcast rights to the National Football League. He serves as executive producer overseeing all aspects of CBS Sports' coverage of the NFL, including production, on-air talent, advertising, and promotion.

During McManus' more than ten years as president of the division, CBS Sports has become the year-round leader in network sports television. In 1999, he led CBS to an unprecedented landmark agreement with the NCAA which became the most comprehensive sports agreement in history. He also reached new multi-year agreements regarding broadcast rights with the PGA Tour and the PGA Championship. Additionally, he extended CBS' broadcast agreements with the United States Tennis Association, the Big Ten conference, and the Southeastern Conference (SEC) football and basketball agreements through 2008.

As president of CBS News, McManus has undertaken a restructuring and retooling of the division, both in front of and behind the camera. Most notable on the on-air side was the April 2006 announcement that Katie Couric would join CBS News as the new anchor and managing editor of the CBS Evening News and a correspondent for 60 Minutes.

Australian Senator Bob Brown argues that China's record on human rights holds it in violation of the Olympic Charter - and therefore, not fit to hold the Olympic Games.

-----

Prince Charles has declined to attend the Beijing games as a protest against perceived human rights abuses. Steven Spielberg heads a list of celebrities urging others to stay away. There has been unprecedented worldwide public protest over China's human rights abuses.

However, are China’s failings any greater than those of other nations that have hosted the Olympics? What of China's great strengths -- do they count for nothing? Where does the balance lie?

Should sport be 'quarantined' from the politics of such matters? And in any case, who are we to judge such matters when there are so many problems in our own backyard? - Intelligence Squared Australia

Senator Bob Brown has been a life-long activist and has become a leading voice for human rights in Australia. Earlier this year, his "Tibet Motion," calling for the Australian Government to take reasonable action against repression of Tibetan people by China, passed the Senate without dissent.

He has long been involved in conservation, and in 1986, he was shot at and assaulted during logging protests. He became the director of the Wilderness Society, which organised the blockade of the dam-works on Tasmania's wild Franklin River in 1982, where he was arrested and spent nineteen days in Risdon Prison. While serving in the Tasmanian parliament, he successfully campaigned for a large increase in the protected wilderness areas.

Bob Brown was a driving force in forming the Australian Greens in 1992. He has spoken widely for the rights of the Tibetan people and against human rights abuses within China.

Australian Journalist Hamish McDonald contrasts the outpouring of protest over the Beijing Olympic Games to silence in previous years - such as the 1904 games in St. Louis, Missouri - when other questionable human rights issues were largely ignored by the international community.

Hamish McDonald has spent twenty of his thirty-five years in journalism based in Asia - in Indonesia, Japan, Hong Kong, India, and China, where he was the correspondent for the Sydney Morning Herald based in Beijing.

He is currently the Asia-Pacific editor for the Sydney Morning Herald. He has been political editor of the Far Eastern Economic Review. He is the author of several books.

(July 31, 2008) China promised journalists complete freedom at the Olympics. But the press found that crashing Beijing's great wall of censorship was an Olympic sport in itself. Did media control, doping and a "tough love" charm offensive tarnish China's Olympic gold?

TIBETANS AND SUPPORTERS PROTEST OUTSIDE OF IOC MEETING IN ATHENS; ACTIVISTS EJECTED FROM HOTEL GROUNDS
Tibetans Demand IOC Cancel Tibet Leg of Torch Relay and Pressure China for Immediate Media Access to Tibet

Contact: Tenzin Yeshi, Tibetan Youth

Athens -- Pro-Tibet activists protested outside the International Olympic Committee's (IOC) Executive Board meeting today in Athens. Four young Tibetan women from the Tibetan Youth Association in Europe were denied access to the hotel where the IOC meeting is taking place, and immediately staged a dramatic 'die-in' to symbolize the death of Tibetans which Tibet activists fear is likely if China is allowed to parade the Olympic torch through Tibetan areas. Additionally, two activists were ejected from the hotel after distributing leaflets appealing to supporters of the Olympic movement to speak up to the IOC. Outside, supporters also held Tibetan flags and banners reading "IOC: No Torch In Tibet!" and "Open Tibet To Media!" During the demonstration, the four Tibetan women carried a photo of Sangye Lhamo, a 23-year old Tibetan nun who was beaten and arrested by Chinese police last Thursday after staging a peaceful protest in Kardze, eastern Tibet.

Chinese consumers use three billion plastic bags every day, but not for much longer.

A government ban on plastic bags has come into force, part of China's efforts to improve its green image ahead of the Olympic Games.

But as Gerald Tan reports, the environmental benefits come with a social cost.
