As stock markets plunge again the price of oil is also falling. That is not what the leaders of the cartel were hoping for when they announced a production cut of one and a half million barrels a day. Al Jazeera's Jonah Hull is at Opec headquarters in the Austrian capital Vienna.

With the oil price plummeting below $60 barrel, Opec ministers are on their way to Vienna for an emergency meeting.

Six years ago Congress granted the president Bush the power to unilaterally attack Iraq. Oil was the main motivator then and is now a topic of discussion in the presidential debates. How much of U.S. oil really comes from the Middle East? And is Arab oil, bad oil?

Afshin Rattansi in Tehran talks to Max Keiser in Paris about a global recession.
TOKYO (Reuters) - Japan's economy contracted in the second quarter at its sharpest rate in seven years, adding to worries that the world's No.2 economy has slipped into a recession as global growth shows more signs of losing steam.

Consumers and companies cut spending as they struggle with steep energy and raw material costs, while spreading damage from the U.S. slowdown hurt exports to emerging nations -- possibly marking the end of Japan's longest expansion since World War Two.

http://www.americanprogressaction.org/issues/2008/analyzing_mccain.html

“George Bush cannot be the bar against which we measure John McCain,” argued Navin Nayak of the League of Conservation Voters. Nayak provided “McCain 101” for the final panel of the day on energy policy. The panel included Joseph Romm and Bracken Hendricks, both Senior Fellows at CAPAF, and Nayak, who emphasized that while McCain’s energy policies look good compared to President Bush, voters must look at McCain’s policies more broadly.

Like Bush, Nayak said, McCain opposes renewable energy, as evidenced by his votes against a renewable electricity standard and tax credits for renewable energy. Nayak also criticized McCain for voting against increasing automobile fuel efficiency, his advisors’ ties to the oil and gas industries, and the fact that McCain’s plan to combat global warming only calls for 60 percent reductions in greenhouse gases by 2050.

Romm criticized McCain for what he called a “placebo energy policy,” which would do nothing to resolve the energy crisis, but would still make people feel better. Similarly, Hendricks criticized McCain for supporting energy policies which even McCain acknowledged would only have a “psychological” effect. Attacking McCain’s support of a gas tax holiday, Romm said, “the important thing to realize about the gas tax holiday is that it’s just a holiday for gas and oil companies.” Romm also argued that allowing offshore drilling in sensitive costal areas, as McCain has proposed, would have no effect on oil prices.

Romm also attacked McCain’s plan to offer $300 million to the inventor of cheaper, more efficient batteries that could make plug-in hybrids more efficient. “It is completely pointless for the federal government to offer $300 million…there’s no way you could actually award this prize. Nobody invents anything that is much cheaper than existing technology today. That only occurs when you sell a million units a year…this is a complete and ...

Small businessmen are feeling the pinch of rising oil prices in Indonesia. Despite widespread protests, costs have soared by 30 per cent in the last few weeks while the government scraps expensive fuel subsidies. Al Jazeera's Step Vaessen reports on how the country is pulling out of the oil exporters' cartel like OPEC because it cannot produce enough oil to export.

During last night's Democratic debate, Hillary Clinton popped out with a doozy that I've only heard repeated on the Thom Hartmann show. I was struck by it, too, and even live blogged it:

Hillary: "...Bush begging Saudis to drop oil prices "How pathetic!"...

Good point, Hill. Bush is now "begging" the Saudis to drop oil prices. How "pathetic", especially considering this from the very same groveler who said this back in 2000:

While on the campaign trail in 2000, Bush told President Bill Clinton how to handle OPEC, in public no less. "What I think the president ought to do," he said, "is he ought to get on the phone with the OPEC cartel and say we expect you to open your spigots."

And in a brilliant, highly educational follow-up comment, Bush informed the audience: "One reason why the price is so high is because the price of crude oil has been driven up."

"OPEC has gotten its supply act together," Bush advised listeners, "and it's driving the price, like it did in the past."

"And," he said in direct advice to Clinton, "the president of the United States must jawbone OPEC members to lower the prices."

Apparently, Bush has lost the phone numbers for OPEC members, or they are refusing to take his calls, because I think it's safe to assume that he did not "jawbone" members of the OPEC cartel.

It's 2008 now and he's begging. I guess all that pull hasn't convinced his pals to make oil affordable so people here can, you know, live.

I'm thinkin' it's also safe to say he's used up all that "political capital", too. And as for that jawbone prowess he might have imagined somewhere in that undersized vacancy he believes is a brain? Like his sobriety, it never existed.

How pathetic.

The value of the dollar continues to decrease. With the mortgage mess and high oil prices, Americans are feeling the pinch. But, as the U.S economy struggles, economies and businesses worldwide are also feeling the effects. Will the Euro be the new world currency? Or will the holiday shopping season be just what the dollar needs to bounce back?

Former U.S. Director of Central Intelligence R. James Woolsey makes an argument for American energy independence.

This excerpt is taken from a discussion recorded in collaboration with the 2007 Aspen Ideas Festival, and was sponsored in part by Chevron Corporation.

-----

"A Conversation About Oil: Leaders Respond," with Alexander A. Karsner and R. James Woolsey at the 2007 Aspen Ideas Festival.

In this, its third year, Aspen Ideas Festival once again gathers scientists, artists, politicians, historians, educators, activists, and other great thinkers around some of the most important and fascinating ideas of our time. As these thinkers present their provocative ideas, they engage a sophisticated and highly motivated audience.

R. James Woolsey is vice president of the consulting firm Booz Allen Hamilton and an officer in its global resilience practice. Previously, Woolsey served as director of the Central Intelligence Agency and delegate-at-large to the US-Soviet Strategic Arms Reduction Talks and Nuclear and Space Arms Talks. He has also been a partner in the law firm of Shea & Gardner in Washington, DC. Woolsey is currently co-chairman (with former Secretary of State George Shultz) of the Committee on the Present Danger, as well as chairman of the advisory boards of the Clean Fuels Foundation and the New Uses Council, and a trustee of the Center for Strategic & International Studies and the Center for Strategic & Budgetary Assessments. He also serves on the National Commission on Energy Policy.
