His research focuses on the role of steroid hormones in amphibian development and he conducts both laboratory and field studies in the U.S. and Africa. The two main areas of interest are metamorphosis and sex differentiation. </p> <p>His work addresses problems on several levels including ecological, organismal, and molecular questions. Studies examine the effects of temperature on developmental rates, interactions between the thyroid hormones and steroids, and hormonal regulation of skin gland development.</p> </div> <a Professor Howard's work has revealed cancer-causing (or 'carcinogenic') effects of many manufactured chemical compounds, some of which pose particular risk to the unborn foetus. Until health and safety standards improve, Dr Howard advocates a chemical hygiene discipline, just as we have a biological hygiene discipline.
