Sara Roy, research scholar in Middle Eastern Studies at Harvard University, examines international opinions of Palestine's ruling Hamas party. Roy claims Hamas to be "a far more pragmatic movement than its typical representation in the West."

-----

Dr. Sara Roy, a senior Middle Eastern studies research scholar at Harvard University, discusses the economic impact of the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories and argues that Israel's policies are aimed at keeping the territory impoverished and dependent. -- ABC FORA

Sara Roy is a senior research scholar at the Center for Middle Eastern Studies at Harvard University where she completed her doctoral studies in international development. Trained as a political economist, Dr. Roy has worked in the Gaza Strip and West Bank since 1985 conducting research primarily on the economic, social and political development of the Gaza Strip and on U.S. foreign aid to the region. Dr. Roy has written extensively on the Palestinian economy, particularly in Gaza, and has documented its development over the last three decades. Her current research, which was funded by a grant from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, examines the social and economic sectors of the Palestinian Islamic movement and their relationship to Islamic political institutions, and the critical changes to the Islamic movement that have occurred over the last decade. Her primary findings point to a restructuring and de-radicalisation of the Islamist movement in the West Bank and Gaza Strip prior to the start of the second Palestinian uprising.

The U.S. and China are the world's number 1 and number 2 importers of oil, says Klare, and they are using every means at their disposal to get it--commercial, diplomatic, and military. Worryingly, they both provide arms and other military assistance to oil-producing countries.

Complete video at: fora.tv

Philanthropy expert Katherine Fulton reviews the history of charitable giving, and talks about how organized philanthropies are adapting to meet modern needs.

-----

"The Deeper News About the New Philanthropy"

10,000 families in the US, Katherine Fulton reported, have assets of $100 million or more. That's up from 7,000 just a couple years ago. Most of that money is "on the sidelines." The poor and the middle class are far more generous in their philanthropy, proportionally, than the very wealthy.

Philanthropy across the board is in the midst of intense, potentially revolutionary, transition, she said. There's new money, new leaders, new rules, new technology, and new needs. Where great wealth used to come mainly from inheritance and oil, now it comes from success in high technology and finance - and ideas and expectations from those business experiences inform (and sometimes over-simplify) the new philanthropy. Some of the great older institutions like the Rockefeller Foundation are radically reorganizing around new ideas and opportunities. But still the greatest amount comes from individuals, many of whom are now "giving while living" instead of handing over the task to heirs. - The Long Now Foundation
