Four months after the bloody war between Russia and Georgia, people living in the breakaway Georgian region of South Ossetia are still living in political limbo.

Al Jazeera's Nazanine Moshiri reports from Tskhinvali, the South Ossetian capital, where residents are looking to Moscow for help.

The war between Russia and Georgia is over, but bombs are still threatening the citizens.

It will take de-mining experts many months to find and destroy unexploded munitions which both armies left behind.

The worst danger for farmers and playing children are cluster bombs, which when exploding are scattered over a vast area, obliterating everything in their path.

Al Jazeera's Matthew Collin reports from a village close to South Ossetia.

The European Union has agreed to resume talks with Russia intended to reach a 'partnership pact' that covers political, economic and trade ties.

Talks were suspended in September, following an outbreak of hostilities between Russia and Georgia over the breakaway region of South Ossetia.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy, who also currently holds the EU rotating presidency, negotiated the accord that ended fighting.

Mikhail Saakashvili, the Georgian president, is said to be intending to raise concerns about Russia's non-compliance with commitments to withdraw troops. While it has withdrawn troops from out of the heart of Georgia, Russia still has several thousand massed in South Ossetia, which Moscow has recognised as an independent state.

A summit is scheduled to take place in Nice, France, on Friday, November 14, and Inside Story discusses the impact of the short-lived conflict on Russia's relations with the EU, and also why Russia is important to Europe in the long-term.

"If we are starting looking ahead," says Antonenko, "I think one task is to set up an independent commission, which should have enough credibility both in Russia and in the West to be able to investigate and to put together a clear fact-finding report on what happened, how this crisis happened. We need almost an hour-by-hour account to be able to provide a commonly agreed discourse on this crisis so we can reconcile these two positions.

"I think it is really important to understand that the Georgian-South Ossetian conflict is at the core of the problems which we have seen in August happening in this war," says Oksana Antonenko.
"I think it is really important to understand that the Georgian-South Ossetian conflict is at the core of the problems which we have seen in August happening in this war," says Oksana Antonenko. "This was a conflict, from my point of view, the escalation of which was absolutely predictable. It was predictable for a number of reasons."

Oksana Antonenko discusses three factors that escalated the tensions on the South Ossetian side: Beslan, nationalism, and Kosovo.

As South Ossetia celebrates the day it declared independence following the first war in the early nineties, Georgians are coming to terms with new realities of their lives.

Thousands remain displaced, unable or unwilling to return to their homes as long as Russian forces still patrol a 7km-wide security buffer zone inside their country.

Jonah Hull met some of those living in tented camps in the Georgian town of Gori, and discovered a sense of uncertainty inside the buffer zone.
