So what impact can third parties have on US politics? And what do they need to do to make it happen?

Presidential candidate Brian Moore of the Socialist Party USA in in Tampa, Florida and Jonathan Hill, National Chairman of the America First Party, whoworked for candidate Pat Buchanan in the 2000 election, talk to us about third party politics.

Complete video at: fora.tv

Thomas Kean, former New Jersey Governor and Chairman of the 9/11 Commission, theorizes on the lack of bipartisanship between Republican and Democratic politicians in modern Washington, D.C.

-----

In January 2009, the next president and Congress will have to find consensus on an agenda to confront the many challenges our nation faces overseas. Regardless of the outcome in November, America's foreign policy can only be fully successful with support from both sides of the aisle.

On September 11 -- when the intense partisan battles of the election season were set aside for a day of national remembrance -- the Partnership for a Secure America and The Century Foundation brought together Democrats and Republicans to seek consensus on national security issues.

In Bipartisan Dialogue: Finding Common Ground for a Secure America, high-level advisors to both parties discuss foreign policy and national security solutions that both sides can support - The Century Foundation

Thomas Kean is a former governor of New Jersey (1982-1990) and, since 1990, the president of Drew University. Kean also served for ten years in the New Jersey Assembly, rising to the positions of majority leader, minority leader, and speaker. As governor, he served on the President's Education Policy Advisory Committee and as chair of the Education Commission of the States and the National Governor's Association Task Force on Teaching. While president of Drew, Kean has served on several national committees and commissions. He headed the American delegation to the UN Conference on Youth in Thailand, served as vice chairman of the American delegation to the World Conference on Women in Beijing; and served as a member of the President's Initiative on Race. He also served on the National Endowment for Democracy. He is chair of the Newark Alliance and the National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy and former chair of the Carnegie Corporation of New York, Educate America, and the National Environmental Education and Training Foundation. Kean is on the board of a number of organizations including the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the National Council of the World Wildlife Fund. He holds a B.A. from Princeton University and an M.A. from Columbia University Teachers College, as well as more than 25 honorary degrees and numerous awards from environmental and educational organizations.

The Public Campaign Action Fund's "Paid For By ..." blog has the following item on how l'affaire Abrahamoff and its shokwaves forced the party scene @ the recent Republican National Convention in the Twin Cities to be rather muted:

Once bitten twice shy? Or actually, bitten quite a few times and now at least marginally chastised: it appears that years of scandal have taken their toll on the party schedule surrounding the Republican National Convention in St. Paul this week. There are still parties-a-plenty put on by lobbying powerhouses and corporations alike but the glitz is a bit more muted this time out.

Conventions present corporations and the lobbyists who work for them with a captive audience of politicos in the mood to schmooze and set adrift in a strange city. Surrounded by flag-printed everything, amped on party rhetoric, and completely divorced from anything like a regular sleep schedule convention attendees are wooed from party to party and at every fete professional persuaders seek out a few private moments with legislators and their staffers to make their case for this corporate tax break or that deregulation bill. And they pay top dollar for that time:

Congress watcher Norm Ornstein of the conservative American Enterprise Institute says the convention's corporate sponsors also see the convention as an extension of the lobbying activities that over the past 10 years have seen expenditures for Washington lobbying double to $2.8 billion.

The convention party scene "is all part of their arsenal for reaching out and having people see their lobbyists and their executives as friends," he says.

Says University of Pennsylvania Professor Kathleen Hall Jamieson: "If you worry about money in politics, this is something to be concerned about. And I worry about money in politics."

Put all the restrictions you want on the dimension and method of delivery for the food you'll serve, and on the semantics of the invitation language -- it's still buying access plain and simple.

(Or is it?)

=====================

The Exaggerator: Readers (and online shoppers) always wanted, make no mistake about that.

Independent Vice Presidential candidate Matt Gonzalez discusses the history of third parties in America, arguing that these groups have been instrumental in promoting social change.

-----

As president of San Francisco's Board of Supervisors, Gonzalez helped to install rank-choice voting and raise the San Francisco minimum wage.

In 2003, he ran for San Francisco mayor in a controversial election, just barely losing to Gavin Newsom - The Commonwealth Club of California

Matt Gonzalez was born in McAllen, Texas in 1965. He received a BA degree from Columbia College, Columbia University, 1987, and a JD from Stanford Law School in 1990. He worked as a deputy public defender in San Francisco from 1991-2000. In 2000 he was elected to the 11-member San Francisco Board of Supervisors, which supervises a city with a budget of $6 billion.

He is best known for having led the effort to implement Instant Run-off Voting, also known as Rank Choice Voting, in San Francisco, where it has been successfully implemented to obtain a majority outcome without the need for costly run-off elections. Matt Gonzalez is a 2008 Vice Presidential Candidate running with Ralph Nader.

The Old Man and the (Blue) Sea: Why America Needs a McCain Presidency with Niall Ferguson.

Ferguson makes a passionate argument why America should be enthusiastic about a John McCain Presidency. The event was part of the Hoover Institution's April 2008 Retreat.

Al Jazeera's Sherine Tadros reports that recently, Kurdish Islamic parties have broken with tradition by decentralising power and bringing in new senior members.

They are trying to modernize to attract voters. But the region has a history of secular politics that some analysts say Islamist politicians will find hard to break.

In stark contrast to much of Iraq, the country's Kurdish north is relatively peaceful.

For most of the past 10 years, two secular parties have shared power.

However, now Islamic groups are becoming more popular.

-----

Dana Milbank discusses his book Homo Politicus: The Strange and Scary Tribes That Run Our Government.

Washington Post columnist Dana Milbank adopts the tools of an anthropologist to describe the bizarre tribal culture of Washington politicians. Milbank is naughty, acerbic, and straight on target in this funny and appalling portrait of our politicians performing in a milieu that is "extraordinarily tolerant of behaviors that other cultures would immediately attribute to psychiatric disorders" - Politics and Prose

A national political reporter for the Post, Dana Milbank writes Washington Sketch, an observational column about political theater in the White House, Congress and elsewhere in the capital. He covered the 2000 and 2004 presidential campaigns and President Bush's first term.

Reason Magazine Senior Editor Brian Doherty discusses the differences between libertarianism and traditional conservative ideologies.

-----

Brian Doherty considers "Radicals for Capitalism: A Freewheeling History of the Modern American Libertarian Movement."

This illuminating, lively history of a political movement on the rise - told through the life stories of its standard bearers - casts new light on the intellectual and political history of post-WWII America. Doherty traces the evolution of libertarianism through the unconventional stories of Ludwig von Mises, F.A. Hayek, Ayn Rand, Murray Rothbard, and Milton Friedman, and their personal battles, character flaws, love affairs, and historical events that altered its course. In so doing, he provides a fascinating new perspective on American history, from the New Deal through the culture wars of the 1060s to today's divisiveness.

In February, the Wall Street Journal noted, "With 'Radicals for Capitalism', Brian Doherty finally gives libertarianism its due...Mr. Doherty has rescued libertarianism from its own obscurity, eloquently capturing the appeal of the 'pure idea', its origins in great minds and the feistiness of its many current champions." - Cody's Books

Brian Doherty is a senior editor of Reason, the libertarian monthly named one of "The 50 Best Magazines" three out of the past four years by the Chicago Tribune. Established in 1968 and a four-time finalist for National Magazine Awards, Reason has a print circulation of 40,000 and won the 2005 Western Publications Association "MAGGIE" Award for best political magazine.

Author and Air America Radio host Laura Flanders criticizes the Democratic Party for lacking organization at the level of local politics.

-----

Democrats are now in control of Congress thanks to a combination of strong Democratic candidates and disenchantment with President Bush and Republican policies. Right? Superb radio host and author Laura Flanders tends to disagree. In her new book, "Blue Grit: True Democrats Take Back Politics from the Politicians," Flanders argues that the Democrats are back in power due to the hard work of well-organized grassroots groups who have been building effective collations and engaging uninspired voters through new technology, new media, and new fundraising strategies - all of which the national Democratic Party has failed to do - Cody's Books

Laura Flanders hosts her own radio show RadioNation on Air America Radio. She is the author of "Bushwomen: How They Won the White House for Their Man"; "Real Majority, Media Minority: The Costs of Sidelining Women in Reporting"; and is the editor of "The W Effect: Sexual Politics in the Bush Years and Beyond."
