<br />QUESTIONER: "[...] The Shiites and the Sunnis hate each other as much as they do us. [...] Are we going to divide it like Bosnia? Or what do we do to politically solve the problem?"

<br />JOHN MCCAIN: "Sunni and Shia are working together in many areas. The refugees are coming back. The government is not functioning as effectively, to say the least, as we want it to."</p>
<p>"I think the people of Iraq are Iraqis first."</p>
<p>"I think if you partition the country, the Turks have said that they would never allow an independent Kurdish state. I think you would have to divide neighborhoods and even bedrooms"</p>
<p>"We've got to see more progress on the part of the Maliki government."</p>
<p>"There's some 20,000 in prison and been in prison. We've got to work out a process where those people can either go to trial or be free."</p>
<p>"I don't see the answer [to ethnic conflict in Iraq] being dividing it up into three countries. I think that leads to significant complications including how the oil revenues are distributed."</p>
