http://www.americanprogress.org/issues/2008/10/health_briefs.html

During this historic election year, health care is a focal point of the national debate. Elizabeth Edwards, author and Senior Fellow at the Center for American Progress, examines the current health care system, offer her suggestions for reform, and discuss the role young people can have in one of America’s top domestic priorities. The discussion was moderated by Ezra Klein, Associate Editor at The American Prospect.

Health care is one of the most important issues concerning Americans this election season. More than 45 million Americans do not have health insurance—a reality that has dire consequences for both individuals and the economy.

Policymakers across the political spectrum agree that we need to make health care more affordable and more accessible to all Americans. But when it comes down to the issues—should reform come from the federal government, or states? how should we construct tax credits? what about high-risk pools?—differences emerge.

Center for American Progress Health Policy Director Karen Davenport says the President will talk health care in his State of the Union but his solution is barely a band-aid for the 47 million uninsured Americans. Instead of disrupting the current system without providing a meaningful and better alternative, the president should support proven policies that provide the most assistance to those in greatest need, create real options for accessible group health insurance, and lay the groundwork for an efficient, high-quality health system. 1/23/07
