Shanto Iyengar holds a joint appointment as the Harry and Norman Chandler Chair in Communication and Professor of Political Science at Stanford University. Iyengar is also a senior fellow (by courtesy) at the Hoover Institution.

Iyengar's teaching and research addresses the role of the news media and mass communication in contemporary politics. He is the author of several books including Media Politics: A Citizen's Guide, Going Negative: How Political Advertisements Shrink and Polarize the Electorate Explorations in Political Psychology,and News That Matters: Television and American Opinion.

Amy S. Mitchell is Deputy Director for the Project for Excellence in Journalism. She has been with the Project since its inception in 1997. Her primary focus is creating and managing the Project’s research, including the Annual Report on the State of the News Media as well as other more specific studies of the news media. She also works on the Project’s teaching instruments including editing a case study curriculum for journalism teaching, titled Thinking Clearly: Case Studies in Journalistic Decision Making. Prior to this occupation, Mitchell was a congressional research associate at the American Enterprise Institute where she researched public policy and its relationship with the press, the public and government.

JOHN MCCAIN: You know yesterday Senator Obama got a little testy on this issue. He said I'm questioning his patriotism. Let me be very clear: I am not questioning his patriotism. I am questioning his judgment. I am questioning his judgment. Senator Obama's made it clear he values withdrawal from Iraq above victory in Iraq. Even today, with victory in sight, over and over again he's advocated unconditional withdrawal, regardless of the facts on the ground and he voted against funding for troops in combat after he said it would be wrong to do so. He's made these decisions not because he doesn't love America, but because he doesn't think it matters whether America wins of loses. I'm going to end this war and I'm going to bring them home with honor and victory, leaving Iraq secured as a democratic ally in the Arab heartland. That's what I'm going to do.

In an interview with Glamour magazine, Obama said attacks on his wife are "infuriating." The likely Democratic presidential nominee blamed the conservative press for going after his wife as if she were the candidate.

"If they have a difference with me on policy, they should debate me. Not her," Obama told the magazine.

Rightly so. Really, has anyone ever seen a Republican candidate’s wife get attacked the way the Republicans and the media go after the wives of Democrats? And don’t give me the line that the “discussion” about Michelle Obama’s patriotism is actually a real issue, because it isn’t unless you believe the paranoid Republican myth that a first lady who isn’t appropriately patriotic would encourage the destruction of her own country. Besides, John McCain has repeatedly said he “really didn’t love America” until he was a POW, and McCain’s “econ brain” Phil Gramm recently said that America is a “nation of whiners,” and no one has questioned their patriotism or the effect it could have on a (shudder) McCain presidency.

The right-wing "outrage" and "discussion" about Michelle Obama's patriotism would be utterly laughable if so many people, including the urban-mythical "liberal" media, weren't actually treating it like it was an important topic of discussion. On FOX and in some of the comments to our newest blockbuster video, FOX ATTACKS! Michelle Obama (216,000 views and 32,750 petition signatures in less than 24 hours!), the right sees themselves as CSI agents who have unraveled the Mystery of the Unpatriotic Candidate's Wife. Because of two misinterpreted and overanalyzed statements, Michelle Obama has been "exposed," her "true identity" revealed! She isn't proud of America! She seems "bitter"! She's actually a Marxist black supremacist sleeper agent bent on destroying and enslaving white America! She must be stopped!

Seriously. This is what many Republicans seem to believe. And they're very proud of themselves for figuring it out.

If there were a movie about a fiendish terrorist plot to destroy America through an overly critical Black Panther disguised as a presidential candidate's wife, it would tank even if it was a Bourne sequel.

"Good work, Agent Hannity! You've caught that Marxist Black Panther terrorist first lady before she had a chance to destroy America with her negative outlook on things! We'll make sure she's imprisoned indefinitely without charge and tortured as a monument to how proud you are of your country."

It's quite possibly the stupidest idea I've ever heard, yet it's one of the main Republican strategies for winning the presidency. And the nightmare scenario of Michelle Obama as first lady is apparently keeping Republicans up at night. Maybe the right thinks it's so "strong on terror" because they are able to conduct their daily lives while simultaneously being terrified of gays, Mexicans, liberals, terrorists, age-appropriate sex education, rappers, Muslims, the sanctity of their marriages, secularism, video games, revealing clothing, naked statues, TV shows, Janet Jackson's boob, sexy advertising, driving in smaller cars, Iran, France, San Francisco, brown people, black people, and black presidential candidates and their wives. With a list like that, you can see why they're so scared — they're waging multiple World Wars of terror in their heads every day.
