The Time Paradox: The New Psychology of Time That Will Change Your Life

Your every significant choice -- every important decision you make -- is determined by a force operating deep inside your mind: your perspective on time -- your internal, personal time zone. This is the most influential force in your life, yet you are virtually unaware of it. Once you become aware of your personal time zone, you can begin to see and manage your life in exciting new ways.

In The Time Paradox, Drs. Zimbardo and Boyd draw on thirty years of pioneering research to reveal, for the first time, how your individual time perspective shapes your life and is shaped by the world around you. Further, they demonstrate that your and every other individual's time zones interact to create national cultures, economics, and personal destinies.

Philip Zimbardo is professor emeritus of psychology at Stanford University and has also taught at Yale University, New York University, and Columbia University. His informative website, www.prisonexperiment.org, is visited by millions every year. Visit the author's personal website at www.zimbardo.com.

This event took place on October 3, 2008

Mitt Romney
Meet and Greet
Henniker, NH 12/26/07

TRANSCRIPT:

MITT ROMNEY: Well, you know, I think it's totally appropriate and part of the political process to compare and contrast positions on issues. I think it's a different step if a candidate begins to attack a person on a personal basis. Senator McCain here, for instance in New Hampshire, attacked me on a personal basis in a mailing he sent out. That's, in my view, different than just talking about differences on, on issues. As long as you describe the other person's positions and record accurately, I think that's an, an entirely legitimate and appropriate uh, uh, uh, part of a political campaign. When it becomes personal, and by the way I've had personal attacks launched on me both in Iowa and in New Hampshire, and, uh, at this stage I haven't responded on a personal basis, but I'm not making any guarantees, I haven't decided what we'll be doing down the road.

Mitt Romney
Meet and Greet
Manchester, NH 12/27/07

TRANSCRIPT:
MRS. ROMNEY: "[...] And it had been a real battle for me. Which I was able to actually overcome. When the Olympic torch was running around the country, Mitt decided to have it as a theme of heroes. There were wonderful stories all across the country of people taking that torch and running that 1/5 of a mile. Wonderful, heart-warming, encouraging stories all across the country. And then when it came time for the torch to be run into Salt Lake City. Instead of Mitt running the torch, which he should have done. He chose me as his hero, to run the torch. And I could barely had walked that torch the three years before, but it was with a great deal of emotion, that my sons were running next to me and my husband handed that torch off to me, and ran by my side for that 1/5th of a mile into Salt Lake City. And so sometimes I think life can be interesting, you feel sometimes like you are jumping off a cliff without a parachute, which is how I felt when we went out there. But to know that I had loved ones that supported me, and people that were there by my side, really made all the difference in the world. And so, I can attest to Mitt's character, he's been there with me in the hardest times, in fun times, been there as a father, as a husband to my children. And you know, we've been through a lot, and been strengthened by it but also encouraged by all the experiences we've had in our lives. Recognizing that sometimes life can be difficult but there are usually friends then that can catch you and pull you aside and help you and make it all ok. That's what he's been to me. And so, on the personal side, I certainly value him as my best friend, as my husband. But I also have seen him demonstrate those same qualities of steadfastness in everything that he's done."

Ed Park visits Google's San Francisco, CA office to discuss his book "Personal Days." This event took place on June 18, 2008, as part of the Authors@Google series.

In an unnamed New York-based company, the employees are getting restless as everything around them unravels. There's Pru, the former grad student turned spreadsheet drone; Laars, the hysteric whose work anxiety stalks him in his tooth-grinding dreams; and Jack II, who distributes unwanted backrubs--aka "jackrubs"--to his co-workers.
On a Sunday, one of them is called at home. And the Firings begin. Rich with Orwellian doublespeak, filled with sabotage and romance, this astonishing literary debut is at once a comic delight and a narrative tour de force. It's a novel for anyone who has ever worked in an office and wondered: "Where does the time go? Where does the life go? And whose banana is in the fridge?"

Ed Park is a founding editor of The Believer and a former editor of the Voice Literary Supplement. His writing has appeared in The New York Times Book Review and many other publications. He lives in Manhattan, where he publishes The New-York Ghost. Visit www.ed-park.com.

Dr. Srikumar Rao visits Google's Mountain View, CA headquarters to discuss his book, "Are You Ready to Succeed? Unconventional Strategies to Achieving Personal Mastery in Business and Life."

Dr. Rao received his Ph.D. in Marketing from the Graduate School of Business, Columbia University. He has an M. Phil. in Marketing from the same school in addition to an M.B.A. from the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad. His undergraduate training was in Physics at St. Stephen's College, Delhi University. Dr. Rao is a professor at the C. W. Post campus of Long island University and an adjunct professor at London Business School and the Haas School of Business at UC Berkeley. He has been a contributing editor for Forbes and writes regularly on management practices, leadership and about the impact of technology on business processes.

He conceived the pioneering course Creativity and Personal Mastery; which is one of the most popular and highest rated courses at London Business School and Columbia Business School. Based on this course, Are You Ready to Succeed is an Eastern tradition inspired self-help book that promises readers the tools to effect fundamental life changes and find inner peace. At its heart, this is a case of Eastern philosophy leading Western MBAs along the path to self-improvement and corporate enlightenment, with a kinder and more productive working world as the ultimate goal.

This event took place on April 11, 2008, as part of the Leading@Google series.

a. fact : there are adults on Earth.

b. fact : there are children on Earth.

c. fact : there are things adults do, directly or indirectly, that have a negative or abusive impact upon the welfare of children in the present and in the future.

d. it follows that, as a responsible adult, one would immediately cease any behaviour/activity that directly or indirectly has a negative impact upon the welfare of children in the present or in the future.

e. having stopped the damaging behaviour/activity one is then in a much better position to work through how to take things forwards.

f. discussing the issue prior to cessation of the abuse only allows the abuse to continue.
