The Dalai Lama's handshake on leaving the Royal Albert Hall was passed along a human chain of over 2000 activists who took to the streets of the city of London, shaking hands with each other right up to the Chinese Embassy. The activists wore T-shirts saying "Give Real Talks A Hand" and, in Chinese, "One China -- Talks on Tibet". OLBERMANN: Time now to call in George Washington University law professor and constitutional law expert: Jonathan Turley.

Good evening, Jon.

JONATHAN TURLEY, CONSTITUTIONAL LAW EXPERT: Hi, Keith.

OLBERMANN: I've often argued here that even if you think the words aren't going to lead to any action, say the words anyway, simply to get them on the record for history, and simply because nothing has ever changed from bad to good in this country without somebody first saying—this is bad. Assess the importance of what Dennis Kucinich did last night.

TURLEY: You know, it is very important. The fact is that this is not supposed to happen the way it happened in the last seven years. The framers, I think, would have been astonished by the absolute passivity if not collusion of the Democrats in protecting President Bush from impeachment. I mean, they created a system that was essentially idiot-proof and God knows we put that to a test in the past years.

But, I don't think they ever anticipated that so many members of the opposition would stand quietly in the face of clear presidential crimes. It has many of us who study the Constitution quite worried that we have a real crisis here. This is not something that really was supposed to happen. It was not something that one would predict.

OLBERMANN: This is the list that he presented last night—a remarkably lengthy and thorough record of the high crimes and misdemeanors. It's just a cascade really. Did Kucinich successfully make his case?

TURLEY: I think he's made his case. I mean, frankly, some of these claims are not really impeachable offenses. Like for example, it's not impeachable to be negligent. If that was the case, we'd lose half that people that sat in the Oval Office. But there are plenty of crimes there. This is a target-rich environment.

What's really disturbing for many of us is that it takes a real effort for Democrats to walk from the floor to their offices and not trip over crimes. I mean, they are all over the record, from destruction of evidence, to illegal surveillance, to unlawful torture programs. They're all over the place.

And what's amazing is that the president is hiding in plain view. He hasn't really denied the elements of these offenses. So, all that is lacking is political will.

But that doesn't mean that suddenly the Democrats are going to get principled and say—my God, we took an oath, and we need to fulfill it regardless of the outcome. But it does mean one member, and they're actually more than one, are really calling their colleagues to the floor and saying—it's time to pony up. It's time to answer the public of whether you stand for the Constitution and against its abridgement.

PETITION TO THE HOUSE OF COMMONS
IN PARLIAMENT ASSEMBLED

We, the undersigned citizens of Canada draw the attention of the House to the following:

THAT, scientific and eyewitness evidence shows that the 9/11 Commission Report is a fraudulent document and that those behind the report are consciously or unconsciously guilty of covering up what happened on 9/11/2001. This evidence overwhelmingly supports the conclusion that World Trade Center Towers 1, 2 and 7 were brought down by demolition explosives and that the official theory of the towers collapsing from the airplanes and the ensuing fires is irrefutably false.

We further believe that elements within the US government were complicit in the murder of thousands of people on 9/11/2001. This event brought Canada into the so-called "War on Terror," it changed our domestic and foreign policies for the worse, and it will continue to have negative consequences for us all if we refuse to look at the facts.

THEREFORE, your petitioners call upon Parliament to:

(1) Immediately launch its own investigation into the events of 9/11/2001 on behalf of the 24 Canadian citizens murdered in New York City.

(2) Act lawfully on the findings of its own investigation by helping to pursue the guilty parties in the international courts.

Hi everyone! I am pleased to announced that I was able to put the binder of 4,444+ signatures and comments directly into the hands of Charlie Kireker yesterday afternoon at Air America Radio HQ. I wanted to take a quick snapshot of him with the binder, but he immediately shirked away, so I reassured him that I come in peace and friendship, and not to clobber him like we do Fox News!

He replied that yes, Air America is in serious consideration over the prospect of offering Sam his own show. I emphasized that the signatures gathered are only the beginning and tip of the iceberg of fans who appreciate his wit and shrewd commentary, and will remain loyal to him. We are only asking, politely but emphatically, for AAR to give him the M-F show that he deserves and we crave.

So it’s come to this. More than forty years after the Civil Rights Movement almost 200 years after Women’s suffrage, just under forty years since 18 year olds have been able to express themselves as voters, and it all may be for naught. There is something broken in a democracy when you cast your vote and a superdelegate from your district renders it null and void:

SAN FRANCISCO, CA — …At least 11 members of the Congressional Black Caucus may cast their superdelegate ballot for Senator Hillary Clinton, even as their districts have voted for Senator Barack Obama, often by overwhelming margins....

While many CBC superdelegates have publicly refused to select a candidate that undermines the popular will of voters, several have stalled and threatened to vote against the candidate chosen at the ballot box. In some cases, these CBC members have made it clear that they are honoring political allegiances. Rep. Laura Richardson (D-CA) dismissed calls to support her constituents as "premature," even as she reminded D.C. newspaper "The Hill" of her commitment to Senator Clinton's Presidential campaign as early as 2004. Senator Obama won her district by 10 points.

Ask elected officials to make clear that they will use their superdelegate vote to ensure the nomination is determined by the electorate, not political insiders.

Why does Bill O'Reilly hate our veterans?

Bill O'LIElly has such a hard time with the truth. Let's help him out. This is from Paul Rieckhoff, an Iraq Veteran and the
Executive Director of Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America:

O'Reilly: "They (homeless veterans) may be out there, but there's not many of them out there. Okay?...If you know where there is a veteran, sleeping under a bridge, you call me immediately, and we will make sure that man does not do it."

Despite O'Reilly's doubts, the facts are irrefutable. According to the Department of Veterans Affairs, almost 200,000 veterans sleep on our nation's streets each night. And Iraq and Afghanistan veterans are joining those ranks at an alarming rate.

This issue is far too important to be swept under the rug. You can also learn more about the issue of homeless veterans, and find out what you can do to help.

He has a great opportunity to help homeless veterans by bringing more attention to the issue, and you can urge him to be part of the solution.

CheneyCare for those of us who "get squat"

Back in December, I posted about this:

"Dick Cheney, with his heart trouble, would probably be dead now if he were an ordinary American forced to search for cardiac care in a thicket of mercenary insurers and heartless HMOs," Shum Preston wrote on the Nurses' association blog. "Cheney gets guaranteed healthcare; we get squat."

Today, they got louder:

The California Nurses Association (CNA)/National Nurses Organizing Committee (NNOC) launched a national campaign today in favor of what the group has dubbed "CheneyCare" -- guaranteed, publicly-funded health care for all Americans.

Looouuuder. I can't heeeear you!

The campaign was inspired by the success of the group's Iowa ads declaring that Vice President Dick Cheney "would be dead" if he did not have publicly-funded health care.

That "would be dead" line was my favorite part. Moving along:

A new version of the Iowa ad asking Americans to sign a petition for "CheneyCare" will run today in eight New Hampshire papers before going national in the New York Times, Washington Post, and USA Today, as well as leading political blogs, on Monday.

Like many of you, I have personal reasons for feeling so strongly about this. One of my kids has Crohn's Disease. Without CheneyCare, it's costing us a fortune.

"All Americans have the right to the quality of care that our Vice-President, President, and Congress already have," said Rose Ann DeMoro, Executive Director of CNA/NNOC and a vice-president of the AFL-CIO. "All the leading Democratic proposals fall well short of "CheneyCare," keeping insurance companies at the apex of power and allowing them to deny care that can save lives. The Republican proposals are even worse."
