The Time Paradox: The New Psychology of Time That Will Change Your Life

Your every significant choice -- every important decision you make -- is determined by a force operating deep inside your mind: your perspective on time -- your internal, personal time zone. This is the most influential force in your life, yet you are virtually unaware of it. Once you become aware of your personal time zone, you can begin to see and manage your life in exciting new ways.

In The Time Paradox, Drs. Zimbardo and Boyd draw on thirty years of pioneering research to reveal, for the first time, how your individual time perspective shapes your life and is shaped by the world around you. Further, they demonstrate that your and every other individual's time zones interact to create national cultures, economics, and personal destinies.

Philip Zimbardo is professor emeritus of psychology at Stanford University and has also taught at Yale University, New York University, and Columbia University. His informative website, www.prisonexperiment.org, is visited by millions every year. Visit the author's personal website at www.zimbardo.com.

Terrorism has been with us for centuries, says Bobbit, but as the nature of the state has changed, so has terrorism. As we move towards "market states"--more devolved, decentralized, and networked--we are entering an era of "market terrorism"--more decentralized and networked, and that will outsource its activities.

Victory is not just a matter of defeating the enemy. That's football or chess, says Bobbitt. Victory is achieving the war aim. In the war against terrorists that aim is to protect civilians, and it must be pursued again every morning.

Philip Tetlock is the Mitchell Professor of Leadership at the University of California, Berkeley. His current research areas and interests include the following:

    * Learning from experience: How do experts think about possible pasts (historical counterfactuals) and probable futures (conditional forecasts)? And how do experts respond to confirmation/disconfirmation of expectations?
* Designing accountability systems: How do people cope with various types of accountability pressures and demands in their social world? When does accountability promote mindless conformity? Defensive bolstering of prior positions? Thoughtful self-critical analysis? ...
* De-biasing judgment and choice. How can organization structure incentives and accountability procedures be used to check common cognitive biases such as belief perseverance and over-confidence? What adverse side effects can such de-biasing efforts have on quality of decision-making?

Professor Tetlock came to Google to talk about his book, "Expert Political Judgment: How Good Is It? How Can We Know?"

This event took place on August 24, 2006, as a part of the Authors@Google series.
