Slovenian Philosopher Slavoj Žižek accuses Israel of a "systematic" political effort to make life difficult for Palestinians, and blames the current Israeli/Hamas crisis on a mishandled approach to religious fundamentalism.

This excerpt is taken from a debate between philosophers Bernard-Henri Lévy and Slavoj Žižek on the modern Left. For the complete video, visit: fora.tv

-----

Bernard-Henri Levy, France's "rock-star philosopher," and Slavoj Zizek, the Slovanian "Elvis of cultural theory," will scrutinize the totalitarianisms of the past as well as those of the future, as they argue for a new political and moral vision for our times and investigate the limits of tolerance.

Does the advent of capitalism cause more violence than it prevents? Is there violence in the simple idea of the neighbor? asks Zizek in Violence: Six Sideways Reflections.

Are human rights Western or Universal? How is it that progressives themselves-those who in the past defended individual rights and fought fascism-have now become the breeding ground for new kinds of dangerous attitudes? asks Lévy in Left in Dark Times: A Stand Against New Barbarism - New York Public Library

Slavoj Žižek's work triggers continuous controversy; Welcome to the Desert of the Real, his analysis of 9/11, was attacked both as anti-Semitic in Israel and as Zionist in Egypt. He is the author of more than thirty books and is the subject of the documentary Žižek. His own critically acclaimed documentary, The Pervert's Guide to Cinema, was the subject of a film retrospective in 2007 at the Museum of Modern Art. Žižek is a senior researcher at the Institute of Sociology, University of Ljubljana, Slovenia, and has been a visiting professor at Columbia University, Princeton, and The New School.

Thomas Cathcart and Daniel Klein visit Google's Mountain View, CA headquarters to discuss their book "Plato and a Platypus Walk Into a Bar: Understanding Philosophy Through Jokes." This event took place on September 16, 2008, as part of the Authors@Google series.

Here's a lively, hilarious, not-so-reverent crash course through the great philosophical traditions, schools, concepts, and thinkers. It's Philosophy 101 for everyone who knows not to take all this heavy stuff too seriously. Some of the Big Ideas are Existentialism (what do Hegel and Bette Midler have in common?), Philosophy of Language (how to express what it's like being stranded on a desert island with Halle Berry), Feminist Philosophy (why, in the end, a man is always a man), and much more. Finally--it all makes sense!

Tom Cathcart and Daniel Klein pursued the usual careers after majoring in philosophy at Harvard. Tom worked with street gangs in Chicago, doctors at Blue Cross and Blue Shield, and dropped in and out of various divinity schools. He lives with his wife on Cape Cod. Dan has written jokes for various comedians including Flip Wilson and Lily Tomlin. He lives with his wife in the Berkshires. Together, they are authors of the politically incorrect book of daily affirmations, Macho Meditations.

Award-winning novelist Salman Rushdie discusses Niccolo Machiavelli, arguing that the infamous Italian political philosopher does not deserve the bad reputation he is often given by popular culture.

-----

Born in Mumbai, India, Salman Rushdie is an outspoken novelist. After a decade working as an ad copywriter, Rushdie had a breakthrough with the publication of his second book, Midnight's Children. The book received critical acclaim and was awarded the Booker Prize in 1981.

His latest novel, The Enchantress of Florence, about a bewitching Moghul princess and her Florentine exploits with such historical characters as Machiavelli, is due out this June - City Arts & Lectures

Sir Ahmed Salman Rushdie is an Indian-British novelist and essayist. He first achieved fame with his second novel, Midnight's Children (1981), which won the Booker Prize.Much of his early fiction is set at least partly on the Indian subcontinent. His style is often classified as magical realism, while a dominant theme of his work is the story of the many connections, disruptions, and migrations between the Eastern and Western worlds.

His fourth novel, The Satanic Verses (1988), led to protests from Muslims in several countries, some of which were violent. Faced with death threats and a fatwā (religious edict) issued by Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, then Supreme Leader of Iran, which called for him to be killed, he spent nearly a decade largely underground, appearing in public only sporadically.

In June 2007, Rushdie was appointed a Knight Bachelor for services to literature. In 2007, he began a five-year term as distinguished writer in residence at Emory University.

The Authors@Google program was pleased to welcome philosopher, professor and author Simon Critchley to Google's NY office to discuss his new book "On Humor".

Simon Critchley studied philosophy at the University of Essex in England (BA 1985, PhD 1988) and at the University of Nice in France (M.Phil 1987). Among his teachers were Robert Bernasconi, Jay Bernstein, Frank Cioffi, Dominique Janicaud and Onora O'Neill. Critchley's M.Phil. thesis dealt with the problem of the overcoming of metaphysics in Heidegger and Carnap and his Ph.D. dissertation was on the ethics of deconstruction in Emmanuel Levinas and Jacques Derrida.

After a position as University Fellow at Cardiff University, Critchley was appointed Lecturer in Philosophy at Essex in 1989, where he became Reader in 1995 and Professor in 1999. Also at the University of Essex, he was Director of the Centre for Theoretical Studies and collaborated closely with Ernesto Laclau.

Critchley was President of the British Society for Phenomenology from 1994-99. In 1997 and 2001, he held a Humboldt Research Fellowship in Philosophy at the University of Frankfurt. Between 1998-2004, Critchley was a Programme Director of the Collège international de philosophie, Paris. In 2006-7, he was a Scholar at the Getty Research Institute in Los Angeles. Since 2004 he has been Professor of Philosophy at the New School for Social Research, New York, but also continues as a part-time Professor at Essex. In addition, he has held visiting professorships at Nijmegen (1997), the Universities of Sydney (2000), Notre Dame (2002), Cardozo Law School in New York (2005), and Oslo (2006).

On Humour is a fascinating and beautifully written book on what philosophy can tell us about humor and about what it is to be human. Simon Critchley probes some of the most perennial features of humor, such as our tendency to laugh at animals and our bodies, why we mock death with comedy and why we think it's funny when people start to act like machines. He also looks as the darker side of humor, as when rife with sexism and racism, and shows how humor might remind us of people we would rather not be. Above all, Simon Critchley argues that humor can tell us much about the human condition, the meaning of life and why comedy itself begins in philosophy.

This event took place on May 14, 2008.

► SamVLOG.com

http://samharris.com/tao.htm

A letter to a friend on his birthday
by Sam Harris

Happy Birthday. In this new year - I ask you to create the vision for what you want this year to be - for yourself, for those you love and for the world. It will affect everything you choose to do. Every day. Every action I take is reflection of what I want my world to be.

In this new year - be brave. Speak up against the wrongs you encounter. Neutrality gives voice to the oppressor, never the oppressed. Silence give a platform to the tormentor, never the tormented. Silence in the company of judgment justifies the act.

Be stronger than your fear or those who perpetrate fear. Investing in worry brings the subject of your fear into reality. Worrying is like praying for what you don't want.

We get to choose between love and fear every day - every moment. That's all there is. EVERYTHING comes from one of those two things. And we get to choose. We are creatures of free will.

Love knows no separation, no division, no hierarchy. Love sees us all as one.

There are those who will not agree. There are those who think that bigger bank accounts will stave off the demons. Bigger locks on our doors will protect us from the demons. And bigger guns will keep the demons out. When, in reality, fear of the demons is the demon.

There is nothing wrong with having money or being cautious or protecting ourselves - but when it is a solution to fear, it will never be enough.

So this year, motivate yourself to act out of what you desire, not what you are afraid of. In this new year, invest in how you want to feel, rather than in getting the things you think will make you feel good after you've gotten them.

If you want to diet, do it because it feels right and good to do something for yourself - to feel better, to look better, to be better, not because when you lose weight, someone will love you or you'll have a better job or your mother won't criticize you - and that will make you feel good. It is the process.

For those of us who love immediate gratification - the process of feeling good begins the moment we say "yes."

If you want to get your finances together, do it because it feels good to have order and well being - not because when you get your finances together you'll be able to buy the things that will make you feel good. It is the process.

It's all about the process - the ride - not the result. Choose the goal, get in action and let go of the result. When I choose the result, I don't have room for, nor can I see anything but my idea of the goal. And what's going to happen could be so much larger and bigger and better than what I think I want to happen. God's imagination is much bigger and better than mine. So just be in action toward the goal and let it take you wherever it may. If I say "yes" and go into the world - I don't know what's going to happen. But something is going to happen. If I say "no" I know what's going to happen - nothing. Do you want to stick with what you know and remain inactive - or jump into the unknown, where you are going to experience joy and sadness and love and loss and change and discomfort and growth and empowerment and activity and - life? This year - I choose "yes."

Everything we do is motivated from either wanting something we don't have or fearing that we will lose something we do have. This new year - unfurrow your brow. Stop coveting. Stop worrying about what you might lose Or who you are if you don't get what you want - or think you are entitled to.

Keep your goals in mind but only as motivation for action - let the result be a surprise. Replace your fears and uncertainties with the accomplishment of living fully - daily. The small, seemingly unimportant tasks that make a life large.

www.ted.com At the time of this talk, TED's future was in the balance. Its founder, Richard Saul Wurman, had just sold the conference to Chris Anderson's foundation, and had announced that this 2002 conference was the last TED he would run. Many in the audience had concluded that the conference would not survive the transition to a new owner, and few had signed up for the following year's event. This was Anderson's attempt to persuade TEDsters that the conference had a future, and that the transition from a for-profit event, to one owned by a nonprofit, could work. The talk took place five months after September 11, and at the very bottom of the dot-com stock market bust, when many in the room had lost 90% or more of their net worth. Here, Anderson shares his own story -- and his vision for what TED can become

This unconventional and lighthearted introduction to the ideas of the major Western philosophers examines The Simpsons — TV's favorite animated family. The authors look beyond the jokes, the crudeness, the attacks on society — and see a clever display of irony, social criticism, and philosophical thought. The writers begin with an examination of the characters. Does Homer actually display Aristotle's virtues of character? In what way does Bart exemplify American pragmatism? The book also examines the ethics and themes of the show, and concludes with discussions of how the series reflects the work of Aristotle, Marx, Camus, Sartre, and other thinkers.

William Irwin is professor of philosophy at King's College, Pennsylvania

This event took place on May 7, 2008, as a part of the Authors@Google series.

Complete video at: fora.tv

British gerontologist, author and cultural critic Raymond Tallis addresses questions regarding free will and the brain.

-----

"Battle of Ideas: My Brain Made Me Do It" at the 2007 Battle of Ideas conference hosted by the Institute of Ideas.

With the politics of behaviour in the ascendancy, there is increasing interest in what science can tell us about why people behave the way they do. The British government is funding the creation of the National Academy for Parenting Practitioners, with the express aim of training a 'parenting workforce' to provide science-based child-rearing advice to parents. In the USA, the MRI scanner and the neuroscientific community are entering the court room to give evidence about whether defendants can be regarded as being responsible for their alleged crimes. UK policymakers cite scientific 'evidence' to explain new interventions on everything from early years' education to the alleged impact of school dinners on academic performance. The science of nutrition now informs earnest discussions about how children's diets improve their classroom behaviour, in order to justify policing lunchboxes and putting school meals at the top of the political agenda. Studies of teenage brain development now regularly inform social debates about the impact of new technologies on young people.

But how much can science tell us about behaviour? Do scientific findings justify the government's many interventions into the early years of children's lives? Should neuroscience enjoy an exalted place in the courtroom? Are policies being developed because of genuine advances in scientific knowledge - or is science being (mis)used, perhaps in the place of political conviction, to justify policies? - IoI

Raymond Tallis was trained at the University of Oxford and St Thomas's Hospital, qualifying in 1970. He was a Professor of Geriatric Medicine at the University of Manchester and a consultant physician in Health Care of the Elderly in Salford (1987-2006).

Outside his medical career, he has been awarded two honorary degrees: DLitt (Hon Causa) from the University of Hull in 1997; and LittD (Hon Causa) from the University of Manchester in 2002. In 2004 he was identified in Prospect magazine as one of the top 100 public intellectuals in the United Kingdom.

His numerous medical publications include two major textbooks, while most of his research publications are in the field of neurology of old age and neurological rehabilitation. He has also published fiction, three volumes of poetry, and over a dozen books and 150 articles on the philosophy of the mind, philosophical anthropology, literary theory, the nature of art and cultural criticism.
