► samharris.com

See a collection of Jayel's photography in a special music video slideshow we put together at:
http://tinyurl.com/aheramHD
Sam sings "Imagine" by John Lennon.

"What I must do is all that concerns me, not what people think. ... you will always find people who think they know what is your duty better than you know it. It is easy to live in the world and live after the world's opinion; it is easy in solitude to live after our own; but the great man is he who in the midst of the crowd keeps with perfect sweetness the independence of solitude."
-- Ralph Waldo Emerson, "Self-Reliance"

Jayel Aheram presents a collection of things seen, experienced, and lived while serving in the harsh deserts of Iraq and elsewhere. A unique view of events rarely seen in the nightly newscast, a point-of-view of one troop in a war zone and at home, and a glimpse of a vastly different and sometimes beautiful Iraq.

For more information, please visit his web site at:
http://www.aheram.com
and his Flickr aacount at:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/aheram

Though known for his caustic wit and spontaneous charm, Jayel Aheram suffers from an overwhelming excess of personality. He is a photographer and a hopeless Flickr addict. He is a compulsive writer and often writes about his latest creative endeavors in his blog Aheram Takes On... He is a product of an international upbringing; at home anywhere from the land of the Rising Sun to the sun-scorched dunes where the ageless Euphrates roll.

In Jayel's words...

The Blogger

I launched Aheram Takes On... in early 2005. The blog has been through two design changes, three coding overhauls, and five different purges. In its current incarnation, it is a chronicle of my creative spirit creating, making, and living; a celebration of things that I value and an insight to my creative process.

I have been blogging on and off since 2000, but it was not a serious venture until early 2005 when I launched Aheram Takes On... It is part-art blog, part-journal, and mostly about me. It is nearly always all original content of my own creation, but I will occasionally feature deserving artists.

The Photographer

I am woefully ignorant of the history of photography and as much as I regret to say this, I cannot say I am influenced by any of the great pioneering masters like Ansel Adams and others. My work is neither an emulation of a particular style nor does it assume to present a specific policy. It is an exercise in extrospection, a documentary of the world and its people as I perceive it.

Early 2005 was full of new beginnings for me. It included the launch of my first serious foray into blogging, my enlistment with the Marine Corps, and the adoption of a new hobby. I woke up one morning deciding that I needed something new to occupy my time, something creative. Painting first and then photography came to mind. My interest in photography was piqued partly by my friend Sachenka Brinkley, an amateur photographer. A Flickr account and a new camera later, a career was born. In February 2008, Cat's Eye became live. It is my professional gallery which I use to highlight selected works and portfolios.

Sam Harris sings
THE VOICE / IMAGINE
available on his new album called "Free":
http://samharris.com/free
The album also includes the song "War On War".

LYRICS:
http://tinyurl.com/voiceimagine

THE VOICE / IMAGINE

THERE IS A VOICE DOWN DEEP INSIDE YOU
AMOUNG THE NOISE THAT BEGS FOR PROOF
A TINY VOICE THAT ALWAYS GUIDES YOU
AND WILL ALWAYS SPEAK THE TRUTH
SOMETIMES I FEAR THE RISING WATERS
WILL SWEEP ME OUT INTO THE SEA
BUT IF I'M STILL, THE VOICE WILL WHISPER
AND IT WILL SURELY SET ME FREE

IMAGINE THERE'S NO HEAVEN,
IT'S EASY IF YOU TRY
NO HELL BELOW US,
ABOVE US ONLY SKY.
IMAGINE ALL THE PEOPLE,
LIVING FOR TODAY.
IMAGINE THERE'S NO COUNTRIES,
IT ISN'T HARD TO DO,
NOTHING TO KILL OR DIE FOR,
AND NO RELIGION TOO.
IMAGINE ALL THE PEOPLE,
LIVING LIFE IN PEACE.
YOU MAY SAY I'M A DREAMER
BUT I'M NOT THE ONLY ONE.
I HOPE SOME DAY YOU'LL JOIN US,
AND THE WORLD WILL LIVE AS ONE.
IMAGINE NO POSSESSIONS,
I WONDER IF YOU CAN,
NO NEED FOR GREED OR HUNGER
OR BROTHERHOOD OF MAN.
IMAGINE ALL THE PEOPLE,
SHARING ALL THE WORLD.
YOU MAY SAY I'M A DREAMER
BUT I'M NOT THE ONLY ONE.
I HOPE SOME DAY YOU'LL JOIN US,
AND THE WORLD WILL LIVE AS ONE.

Meet Corporal Jayel Aheram this week on SamTube.com
as he will be Sam's "Friend Friday" guest.
FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 28th!

You will remember Jayel's photography from Sam's "War On War" music video contest over the summer. He is the only photographer we asked to be part of the contest, and he graciously allowed all contestants to use his work for their videos. Jayel was also one of the Judges along with some pretty big celebrities.

With this video, we merely wanted to give you a slideshow of Jayel's work, to prepare you for the video to follow. Most of the photos are from the series he calls "The Harsh Desert".

"The Harsh Desert" is a tale in photographs.

---

Sam is singing THE VOICE / IMAGINE
available on his new album called "Free".
The album also includes the song "War On War".

For more info, visit: SamHarris.com

LYRICS:
http://tinyurl.com/voiceimagine

THE VOICE / IMAGINE
THERE IS A VOICE DOWN DEEP INSIDE YOU
AMOUNG THE NOISE THAT BEGS FOR PROOF
A TINY VOICE THAT ALWAYS GUIDES YOU
AND WILL ALWAYS SPEAK THE TRUTH
SOMETIMES I FEAR THE RISING WATERS
WILL SWEEP ME OUT INTO THE SEA
BUT IF I'M STILL, THE VOICE WILL WHISPER
AND IT WILL SURELY SET ME FREE......
IMAGINE THERE'S NO HEAVEN, IT'S EASY IF YOU TRY
NO HELL BELOW US, ABOVE US ONLY SKY.
IMAGINE ALL THE PEOPLE, LIVING FOR TODAY.
IMAGINE THERE'S NO COUNTRIES, IT ISN'T HARD TO DO,
NOTHING TO KILL OR DIE FOR, AND NO RELIGION TOO.
IMAGINE ALL THE PEOPLE, LIVING LIFE IN PEACE.
YOU MAY SAY I'M A DREAMER BUT I'M NOT THE ONLY ONE.
I HOPE SOME DAY YOU'LL JOIN US, AND THE WORLD WILL LIVE AS ONE.
IMAGINE NO POSSESSIONS, I WONDER IF YOU CAN,
NO NEED FOR GREED OR HUNGER OR BROTHERHOOD OF MAN.
IMAGINE ALL THE PEOPLE, SHARING ALL THE WORLD.
YOU MAY SAY I'M A DREAMER BUT I'M NOT THE ONLY ONE.
I HOPE SOME DAY YOU'LL JOIN US, AND THE WORLD WILL LIVE AS ONE.

Amanda and the 48 crew are in Gdansk, Poland, and at the mercy of Agata and Leszek, young journalism students keen to show the world why their city is central to the new, confident Poland.

Gdansk is just one of part of what locals call the Tri-City, the metropolitan area also comprising 19th Century spa town Sopot and the new city of Gdynia, the most affluent region of post-communist Poland.

And we begin in Gdansk's old town, as Agata and Leszek guide Amanda through the opening parade of the 750-year-old Jamark Dominikianski festival, a massive street market which survived communism to become the largest celebration of commerce and culture in the country.

But they leave the romance of the sunny street market for the cold of an abandoned building in the Gdansk shipyards. Once the pride and joy of Polish industry, the shipyards that gave birth to the Solidarity movement are now struggling to survive. One of Poland's top photographers, Michal Szlaga, has spent eight years documenting the demise of the industry, and taking portraits of the forgotten heroes of Solidarity the trade union movement that was key to ending communism in Poland. On a shooting expedition to a former Nazi submarine factory, Michal shows Amanda the beauty he finds in the yards abandoned spaces, most of which are destined for re-development into shopping malls and apartments.

While Michal is a Pole obsessed with documenting decay, 30,000 modern day Medievalists are obsessed with reconstructing the past as accurately as possible. Maciej, a knight and commander of the Von Reihl brotherhood, shows us some genuine jousting, explains what goes into his very authentic medieval outfit and gets us into to the most intimate of reconstructionist events a knighting ceremony.

Celebrated photographer Annie Leibovitz shows Sir David around her new exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery in London, Annie Leibovitz: A Photographers Life 1990-2005, consisting of a collection of some of her high-profile subjects, but also some autobiographical works, of family and close friends.

Famed for her work for Rolling Stone and celebrity portraits for Vanity Fair, including pictures of John Lennon and Yoko Ono in bed and a pregnant Demi Moore, Leibovitz herself has traditionally shied away from the spotlight.

This week on One on One, Riz Khan meets internationally-acclaimed photographer, David Montgomery.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, shortly before the Second World War, he started pursuing his passion for photography by attending courses run by the renowned art director of Harpers Bazaar, Alex Brodevitch.

Soon after, David Montgomery started working closely with the award-winning photographer, Lester Bookbinder, who took him under his wing.

In fact, it was following Bookbinder on a trip to England at the start of the 1960s that introduced Montgomery to London in full swing where, he says, he fell in love with the soft, romantic English light and never went back.

The dynamic British capital was to become his permanent home, as he began to attract attention with his stylish portraits of the high-profile stars of the era.

Before long, Montgomerys portfolio included anyone who was anyone from the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, to actors, politicians, and royalty.
In fact, one of his most high-profile assignments was a portrait of Queen Elizabeth the Second.

As much as he still likes to take portraits, David Montgomery has found another calling as a teacher to a new generation of photographers.
