The Authors@Google program was pleased to welcome Kyle Cassidy to Google's New York office to discuss his book, "Armed America: Portraits of Gun Owners in Their Homes".

Kyle Cassidy has been a freelance writer and photographer since 1999. His photographs have been published in the New York Times, Baaron's Financial, and the Philadelphia Inquirer. He writes frequently about technology and has been an outspoken voice in the area of practical modern photographic theory. Largely known for his fashion and portrait photography, he became interested in photographing gun owners during the 2004 Presidential Election.

The question of gun ownership in America is a fractious one. Even the number of guns in the country is in significant debate. The National Rifle Association (NRA), the country's largest pro-gun lobbying group, quotes the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (BATFE)'s estimate that in 1999 there were about 215,000,000 guns in America and one gun in about half of the households in the country. The Brady Campaign (the nation's leading anti-gun coalition) estimates there are 192,000,000 guns in America, owned by 39% of the population.

This isn't a book about guns. It's a book about people.

Whether it's 39% or 50% of Americans, it's still an awful lot of people. I started wondering just who they were, what they looked like, and how they lived. Such was the genesis of Armed America: Portraits of American Gun Owners in Their Homes. The idea was to photograph a hundred gun owners, in their homes, and do a gallery show. I figured this would take about two years. But very soon after I started, it became evident that my ambitions were too low. My mailbox flooded with letters from people I didn't know wanting to participate -- I realized that I could probably photograph a hundred people in two months, but it wasn't a number of people that was important, it was their stories -- a cowboy in Texas, a survivalist in Montana, a deer hunter in Pennsylvania, a sheriff in Georgia, a soldier in Idaho.... What I really needed, I realized, was to get moving, to drive across the country and find America somewhere between here and there.

This event took place on July 22, 2008.

The Authors@Google program was thrilled to welcome acclaimed photograper and author Robert Zuckerman to the Google NY office to discuss his book "Kindsight"

Known for his work doing photography for motion pictures, Zuckerman's imagery has appeared in advertising and publicity for such films as The Crow, I Know What You Did Last Summer, Any Given Sunday, Training Day, Terminator 3, Bad Boys 2 and National Treasure and for such television shows as "The Shield" and "Nip/Tuck." He has also photographed campaigns for United Way and City of Hope. Through the years he has photographed numerous family portraits, weddings, pregnancy pictures and other human celebrations for people of all walks of life, from top celebrities to inner city residents to AIDS patients and others among the less fortunate. A graduate of UC Berkeley and The American Film Institute, Zuckerman co-produced the groundbreaking, award winning Video from Russia: The People Speak (1984, directed by Dimitri Devyatkin) which ran on ABC and then on A&E for three years, and he directed and produced the New York City portion of the official "Hands Across America" video in 1986.

"For me, photography as much as possible has become an integration of life and craft. Through it I am able to give value to people's lives and derive value in my own life, beyond making a living," says Zuckerman. In his book the unusual and frank photos celebrate the beauty of random human encounters and turn everyday life experiences into profound visual testaments.

Kindsight is a collection of photographs and accompanying texts by Zuckerman illuminating the richness of everyday life encounters and experiences. From taxi and bus drivers to waitresses, plumbers and kids at a playground, Kindsight shows the extraordinary within the ordinary. As one reader-viewer states, these pieces "see something in everything." The book includes texts by Will Smith, Debra Winger and Michael Lally, among others. Kindsight has Been Awarded Honorable Mention in the 2005 International Photography Awards (IPA Lucie) in the Book - Professional/People category
This event took place on May 12, 2008.

Photographer Joe McNally visits Google's Mountain View, CA headquarters to discuss his book "The Moment It Clicks." McNally is an internationally acclaimed photographer, whose career has spanned 30 years and included assignments in over 50 countries. Although the majority of his career has been spent shooting for magazines such as Time, Sports Illustrated, and National Geographic, in the mid-1990s Joe served as Life magazine's staff photographer, the first one in 23 years. He also has shot commercial assignments for Target, Nikon, and Sony, to name a few.

Joe is a recipient of the Alfred Eisenstaedt Award and has been honored by Pictures of the Year International, World Press Photo, The Art Directors Club, American Photo, Communication Arts, and Graphis. He conducts numerous workshops around the world as part of his teaching activities. One of Joe's most notable projects, Faces of Ground Zero — Giant Polaroid Collection, has become known as one of the most significant artistic responses to the tragedy at the World Trade Center.

www.ted.com British artist Alison Jackson talks about her provocative explorations of celebrity culture. By making photographs that seem to show our favorite celebs (Diana, Elton John) doing what we really, secretly, want to see them doing, she's questioning our shared desire to get personal with celebrity culture. Funny and sometimes shocking, Jackson's work contains some graphic images.

www.ted.com While in Asia in 2007, TEDster Paul Koontz got the priceless chance to spend a few days in North Korea. He brought his two kids -- and his camera, capturing both quotidian detail (like the military bearing of a lonely traffic warden) and the grand spectacle leading up to the Mass Games. It's a rare perspective on a culture we know far too little about.

www.ted.com What is happiness, and how can we all get some? Buddhist monk, photographer and author Matthieu Ricard has devoted his life to these questions, and his answer is influenced by his faith as well as by his scientific turn of mind: We can train our minds in habits of happiness. Interwoven with his talk are stunning photographs of the Himalayas and of his spiritual community.

The attack on the World Trade Center was the most watched event in human history. And the footage seen of that day came not only from TV cameras, but also from workers, tourists, and passersby, each of whose lives would change dramatically when confronted with the sight of the attacks.

David Friend has uncovered the stories behind those images--from the street-level shots of the north tower crumbling to firefighters raising the American flag over the rubble. In Watching the World Change, he traces the images back to their sources and charts their impact over the next seven days. That week was the beginning of a digital age, a moment when all the advances in television, photography, and the Web converged on a single event.

David Friend is Vanity Fair's Editor of Creative Development.

This event happened on September 5, 2007 at the Google NYC office
