TRANSCRIPT:
Q: Yesterday Mitt Romney went to eat Fried Chicken and he took the skin off the Fried Chicken. Uhh, its been talked as about almost a John Kerry 2004 Philly cheese steak move, when he ordered uh Swiss cheese. It seemly was to be a little out of touch with how a majority people eat their Fried Chicken. Sir, how do you eat your Fried Chicken as a southerner?

HUCKABEE: Well, since Ive uhh Ive gone through the weight loss program, I tried to eat it more broiled than baked. But I can tell you this, any southerner knows if youre not gonna eat the skin, dont bother calling it fried chicken. And uhh, thats good, Im glad to hear that he did that, cause that means Im gonna win Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, uhh, Arkansas, Oklahoma, umm all these great southern states who understand that the best part of fried chicken is the skin if youre gonna eat it that way.
It also, its reminiscent, it sounds like the time 1976 Gerald Ford, I was living in Texas, in grad school at the time. Gerald Ford uhh was in San Antonio, was handed a Tamale and tried to eat it with the Shuck on. And all that weekend, every, every newscast in Texas led with President Ford doesnt know how to eat a Tamale. He lost Texas, and many believe he lost the presidency, and there are a lot of people who will believe forever that it was the shuck on the Tamale, not Jimmy Carter that beat Gerald Ford in 1976. So, who knows?

On the state level, 7 governors and 1,221 state legislators have taken the pledge.Mr. Norquist is author of the book Leave Us Alone -- Getting the Government's Hands Off Our Money, Our Guns, Our Lives.
Journalist Richard Goldstein argues that gay rights advocates should not expect a hypothetical President Obama to be a leader on gay issues, and should instead focus their efforts on affecting change in the U.S. Congress.

-----

Efforts to overcome discrimination based on sexual orientation have been part of a more generalized agenda of civil rights. These efforts have been played out in the streets, in major institutions, and in the courts.

What do the politics of statewide elections and the presidential race of 2008 tell us about efforts to remedy the effects of discrimination on gays, lesbians and transgendered individuals?

The panelists who will deal with issues of marriage and the family, employment, health and well-being to assess electoral politics and the interests of a gay constituency include Judith Stacey, professor of Social and Cultural Analysis, Sociology Department, NYU Center for the Study of Gender and Sexuality and author of In the Name of the Family: Rethinking Family Values in the Postmodern Age; Shannon Minter, legal director of The National Center for Gay Rights and lead attorney for same-sex couples in the marriage case recently decided by the California Supreme Court, and Richard Goldstein, journalist and author of Homocons: Liberal Society and the Gay Right.

Sponsored by the Wolfson Center for National Affairs in partnership with the Alliant International University's Rockway Institute for Science and LGBT Public Policy - The New School

Australian Journalist Hamish McDonald contrasts the outpouring of protest over the Beijing Olympic Games to silence in previous years - such as the 1904 games in St. Louis, Missouri - when other questionable human rights issues were largely ignored by the international community.

-----

Prince Charles has declined to attend the Beijing games as a protest against perceived human rights abuses. Steven Spielberg heads a list of celebrities urging others to stay away. There has been unprecedented worldwide public protest over China's human rights abuses.

However, are China’s failings any greater than those of other nations that have hosted the Olympics? What of China's great strengths -- do they count for nothing? Where does the balance lie?

Should sport be 'quarantined' from the politics of such matters? And in any case, who are we to judge such matters when there are so many problems in our own backyard? - Intelligence Squared Australia

Hamish McDonald has spent twenty of his thirty-five years in journalism based in Asia - in Indonesia, Japan, Hong Kong, India, and China, where he was the correspondent for the Sydney Morning Herald based in Beijing.

He is currently the Asia-Pacific editor for the Sydney Morning Herald. He has been political editor of the Far Eastern Economic Review. He is the author of several books.
