<p>WASHINGTON, April 3 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. lawmakers have invested a total of 195.5 million U.S. dollars in the defense department's contract companies and gained much profit from the Iraq war, said a new study released on Thursday. </p>
<p> The Center for Responsive Politics, a Washington-based nonpartisan group, conducted the study by reviewing lawmakers' financial statements in 2006. </p>
<p> From 2004 to 2006, a total of 151 Congress members invested 78.7 million dollars to 195.5 million dollars in companies that have contracts with the Pentagon, and brought them profit of between 15.8 million dollars and 62 million dollars, according to the study. </p>
<p> It also found more congressional Republicans than Democrats have stocks in the defense companies, but Democrats' military-related investment in 2006 is higher than Republicans, which is 3.7 million dollars to 577,500 dollars. </p>
<p> The Center for Responsive Politics voiced the concerns that lawmakers' investment in the defense department contractors could constitute a conflict of interest as they take part in the decision-making on Iraq war budgets.</p>

<br />AUDIENCE MEMBER: "Now that you're the Republican nominee for President of these United States, do you have any second thoughts on McCain-Feingold campaign finance reform?"</p>
<p>JOHN MCCAIN: "This meeting is adjourned. [crowd laughs] I do not. I believe that today, still, the influence of special interests in Washington [has] crowded out the interests of the average citizens of the United States of America who are not represented by big money interests in Washington. Before we passed our legislation, it was routine for a trial lawyer, a union leader or a corporation executive to be called by a powerful member of Congress and say, I need a 6-figure or sometimes 7-figure check from you, and by the way, your legislation is up before my committee next week. And that's where all this earmarking and pork-barrelling also that corrupted us. </p>
<p>"Corruption. I don't use that word lightly, my friends. We have former members of Congress residing in federal prison. If that isn't corruption, I don't know what is. So, we tried very hard. And I'll continue to try very hard to reduce the influence of special interests.</p>
<p>"Look at the energy bill. I voted against the energy bill. Senator Obama voted for it. Look at the farm bill. [...] </p>
<p>"So I'll continue to work to try to clean up and reduce--maybe never eliminate, but reduce the influence of special interests in Washington, DC. And I'd like to tell you that I think that in Washington today that your interests are uppermost. And I don't think they are in a lot of the legislative business that we do. So we'll have to continue to work to try to make sure that we can eliminate some of these very terrible practices that have become commonplace. And I also will count on some of our citizens to exercise their voice at the ballot booth."</p>

<p><span>Don't Call Me Buckwheat from my "Don't Call Me Buckwheat" album released in 1992.<br /><br />It's time to bury the 'N' word along with all the other racial slurs.<br /><br />I was inspired to write this song after a very upsetting moment: I was at Shea Stadium watching the Mets vs. Houston, Dwight Gooden vs. Nolan Ryan. I was sitting in foul territory in left field. I got up to get a few franks and soda for the guys, walking and watching the game and going down the steps, all at the same time. I was probably blocking the view of people--and one guy says, "Hey, Buckwheat! Get the f--k out of here, Buckwheat!" I had never heard the word used before like that; I was shocked. I turned around and I was just frozen. I kept walking and I was on line and feeling really uncomfortable. I said, "Don't call me Buckwheat" to myself, and I went home and wrote the song. It just brought back my whole childhood, all the name calling. I grew up in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn in a very mixed-race community: Jews, Irish, Blacks, Italians and Spanish, K--s, M--ks, N-----s, W--s and sp--s. You heard those words a lot. I would cringe when I heard the "n------" word and I still do. The whole usage of it today in rap disturbs me to no end. Kids don't know the real meaning and how it feels to hear it. It got to the point where you knew you'd hear it almost every day from someone.</span></p>

<p>Award-winning novelist Salman Rushdie discusses Niccolo Machiavelli, arguing that the infamous Italian political philosopher does not deserve the bad reputation he is often given by popular culture.</p>

<p>Born in Mumbai, India, Salman Rushdie is an outspoken novelist. After a decade working as an ad copywriter, Rushdie had a breakthrough with the publication of his second book, Midnight's Children. The book received critical acclaim and was awarded the Booker Prize in 1981.</p>
<p>His latest novel, The Enchantress of Florence, about a bewitching Moghul princess and her Florentine exploits with such historical characters as Machiavelli, is due out this June - City Arts & Lectures</p>
<p>Sir Ahmed Salman Rushdie is an Indian-British novelist and essayist. He first achieved fame with his second novel, Midnight's Children (1981), which won the Booker Prize.Much of his early fiction is set at least partly on the Indian subcontinent. His style is often classified as magical realism, while a dominant theme of his work is the story of the many connections, disruptions, and migrations between the Eastern and Western worlds.</p>
<p>His fourth novel, The Satanic Verses (1988), led to protests from Muslims in several countries, some of which were violent. Faced with death threats and a fatwā (religious edict) issued by Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, then Supreme Leader of Iran, which called for him to be killed, he spent nearly a decade largely underground, appearing in public only sporadically.</p>
<p>In June 2007, Rushdie was appointed a Knight Bachelor for services to literature. In 2007, he began a five-year term as distinguished writer in residence at Emory University.</p>
