Children's Defense Fund founder Marian Wright Edelman criticizes child poverty rates in America, using the image of a family with six children who only care for five.

-----

Marian Wright Edelman talks about her new book The Sea Is So Wide and My Boat Is So Small: Charting a Course for the Next Generation.

The founder of the Children's Defense Fund looks back on what has been done, and what needs to be done, to make the nation and world safe and fair for all children. - Book Passage

Marian Wright Edelman was born in and grew up in Bennettsville, South Carolina, one of five children. In 1963, after graduating from Yale Law School, Marian Wright Edelman worked first in New York for the NAACP Legal and Defense Fund, and then in Mississippi for the same organization. There, she became the first African American woman to practice law. During her time in Mississippi, she worked on racial justice issues connected with the civil rights movement, and she also helped get a Head Start program established in her community.

During a tour by Robert Kennedy and Joseph Clark of Mississippi's poverty-ridden Delta slums, Marian met Peter Edelman, an assistant to Kennedy, and the next year she moved to Washington, D.C., to marry him and to work for social justice in the center of America's political scene. They had three sons.As part of the efforts of Marian Wright Edelman and the Children's Defense Fund on behalf of children, she has also advocated pregnancy prevention, child care funding, health care funding, prenatal care, parental responsibility for education in values, reducing the violent images presented to children, and selective gun control in the wake of school shootings.

Many of Europe's 10 to 12 million Roma, or Gypsy, communities live in central or eastern Europe on the margins of society.

For them, Europe's 'untouchables', poverty, persecution and discrimination are part of daily life.

A summit in Strasbourg is trying to address this issue and examine the Roma plight.

Since 1999 the Roma population in Kosovo has fallen sharply after ongoing attacks.

Al Jazeera's Barnaby Philips reports.

Magadascar's president Mark Rav swept into power six years ago on the promise he would cut poverty by 50 per cent in five years by opening up the country to free market reforms.

Most Malagsy live on less than a $1 dollar a day and the poor are getting poorer.

In the first of three reports from Madagascar, people tell Al Jazeera's Jane Dutton that the only person benefitting from the reforms in the country is the president himself.

RUDY GIULIANI: Each year... 20-30 million people a year are coming out of poverty in India and China. Some Americans look at that and they say thats a real challenge to our jobs... heres the way I look at it: 20 or 30 million people coming out of poverty anywhere is good, its a great trend, its the way we want the world to go and look at all those new customers for the United States of America.
[Yeeeaaaaaaahhhhh]
Look at all those people who now have more disposable income and boy do we have things to sell to them. In fact we have their future to sell to them.

http://www.americanprogress.org/issues/energy

In "The Green Collar Economy", Center for American Progress Senior Fellow, acclaimed activist and political advisor Van Jones delivers a real solution that both rescues our economy and saves the environment. The economy is built on and powered almost exclusively by oil, natural gas, and coal—all fast-diminishing nonrenewable resources. As supplies disappear, the price of energy climbs and nearly everything becomes more expensive. With costs and unemployment soaring, the economy stalls. Not only that, when we burn these fuels, the greenhouse gases they create overheat the atmosphere. As the headlines make clear, total climate chaos looms over us. The bottom line: we cannot continue with business as usual. We cannot drill and burn our way out of these dual dilemmas.

Instead, Van Jones illustrates how we can invent and invest our way out of the pollution-based grey economy and into the healthy new green economy. Built by a broad coalition deeply rooted in the lives and struggles of ordinary people, this path has the practical benefit of both cutting energy prices and generating enough work to pull the U.S. economy out of its present death spiral.

http://halfinten.org/

Harlem Children's Zone is America's most ambitious and closely watched effort to break the cycle of intergenerational poverty. HCZ aims to create a "conveyor belt" for Harlem's poor children, a series of rich and effective supports-from a "Baby College" for parents, to an all-day pre-kindergarten and extended-day charter schools, to health clinics and community centers, all the way to help in succeeding in college. Together, these efforts aim to give poor children the stimulation and the opportunities that most kids growing up in middle-class neighborhoods receive from birth. This year, HCZ will serve 8,000 children living in the 97 block Zone. The initiative has been featured on 60 Minutes, the Oprah Winfrey Show, and in the New York Times Magazine.

Policymakers have long talked about the lessons of HCZ for anti-poverty policy nationwide, and now there are proposals to replicate the HCZ model nationally. This event brings together Geoffrey Canada, HCZ's President and Chief Executive Officer; Roland Fryer, a Harvard economics professor and the founder of Harvard's new Education Innovation Laboratory, a major effort to identify and evaluate promising approaches to closing the achievement gap; and Paul Tough, a New York Times Magazine editor and the author of the new book, Whatever It Takes, a critically acclaimed look at HCZ in the broader context of American poverty and education policy.

UN: Financial Inequality Rapidly Grows in US

A new United Nations report has revealed major US cities, including New York, Washington, Atlanta and New Orleans, have levels of economic inequality that rival cities in Africa. The report found that the United States had the highest inequality and poverty after Mexico and Turkey, and the gap has increased rapidly since 2000. The life expectancy of African Americans in the United States is about the same as that of people living in China and some states of India.
