China political analyst Harry Harding discusses future scenarios for China's rapid economic growth, and its implications for U.S. foreign policy.

-----

China's economic size will match that of the U.S. by 2035 and double it in total GDP by midcentury, concludes Albert Keidel in presenting his new policy brief, China's Economic Rise—Fact and Fiction.

Keidel and a panel of leading experts on China's economy and military discuss the success and substantiality of China's economic rise and addressed the U.S. and global implications of China's long-term economic growth.

Keidel is joined by Stephen Voth with the U.S. government, Gregory Foster of National Defense University, and Harry Harding of George Washington University. Carnegie's Michael Swaine moderates the discussion - Carnegie Endowment for International Peace

Director of Research and Analysis, Eurasia Group Harry Harding is a leading China specialist in the United States. He has advised several US Presidents on developments in the PRC; before the Tiananmen Square demonstrations he was brought to Camp David for informal discussions with the first Bush administration. He has written roughly 10 books, including the seminal "China's Second Revolution," regularly cited by Chinese officials as influencing their present 5-year plan.

Dr. Harding served on the political science faculties of Swarthmore College (1970-1971) and Stanford University (1971-1983) and was a National Fellow at the Hoover Institution. He then became Senior Fellow in the Foreign Policy Studies Program at the Brookings Institution (1983-1994), and, later, Dean of the Elliott School of International Affairs at George Washington University, a post he held for more than 10 years in total ( January 1995 - June 30, 2005).

On August 1, 2005, Harding joined Eurasia Group, a global political risk consultancy, as the firm's Director of Research and Analysis.

John McCain
Town Hall
York, PA 08/12/08

TRANSCRIPT:
JOHN MCCAIN: I want to say a word about nuclear to you. And I'm very familiar with Three Mile Island, and I'm very familiar with Chernobyl. But I'm also familiar, as I hope you are too, that we've been sailing Navy ships around the world for 60 years with nuclear power plants on them, and we've never had an accident. We've never had a serious accident! So we need to store spent nuclear fuel, and we need to reprocess. [...] So we, we can! We can! You know, you pick up the paper and you listen to these various pundits and all that, and they says we can't solve the nuclear problem, we can't reprocess, we can't store it; we can't develop a electric car that'll take someone 200 miles or 100 miles before you have to plug it in. We can't. Everybody's saying we can't. That's not America! America's a country that has met and overcome every challenge we have ever faced, and we can do this one. We have the ability, innovation and the technology that we will become independent of foreign oil.

Steven Wax, a Federal Public Defender who represents seven Gitmo prisoners, is in the middle of this Constitutional maelstrom.

Former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger gives his perspective on warfare and anti-war dissent.

-----

Henry Kissinger discusses war and more with Peter Robinson as part of the Hoover Institution's interview series, Uncommon Knowledge.

War and the media - the two have not partnered so well since Vietnam. But in the days of the Internet, conservative talk radio, and Fox News, has the dynamic changed?

Kissinger says only a bit, and that the media remain heavily biased against military action.

Additionally, the 1960s concept that the U.S. government is somehow an evil enterprise is alive and well.

In this environment, Kissinger says our leaders need to present a clearer and more educated vision of the American role in the world - Hoover Institution

Henry Alfred Kissinger was the 56th Secretary of State of the United States from 1973 to 1977, continuing to hold the position of Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs which he first assumed in 1969 until 1975. After leaving government service, he founded Kissinger Associates, an international consulting firm, of which he is chairman.

Peter M. Robinson is a research fellow at the Hoover Institution, where he writes about business and politics, edits Hoover's quarterly journal, the Hoover Digest, and hosts Hoover's television program, Uncommon Knowledge. Robinson is also the author of three books: How Ronald Reagan Changed My Life; It's My Party: A Republican's Messy Love Affair with the GOP; and the best-selling business book Snapshots from Hell: The Making of an MB.

Complete video at: fora.tv

Award-winning novelist Salman Rushdie discusses Niccolo Machiavelli, arguing that the infamous Italian political philosopher does not deserve the bad reputation he is often given by popular culture.

-----

Born in Mumbai, India, Salman Rushdie is an outspoken novelist. After a decade working as an ad copywriter, Rushdie had a breakthrough with the publication of his second book, Midnight's Children. The book received critical acclaim and was awarded the Booker Prize in 1981.

His latest novel, The Enchantress of Florence, about a bewitching Moghul princess and her Florentine exploits with such historical characters as Machiavelli, is due out this June - City Arts & Lectures

Sir Ahmed Salman Rushdie is an Indian-British novelist and essayist. He first achieved fame with his second novel, Midnight's Children (1981), which won the Booker Prize.Much of his early fiction is set at least partly on the Indian subcontinent. His style is often classified as magical realism, while a dominant theme of his work is the story of the many connections, disruptions, and migrations between the Eastern and Western worlds.

His fourth novel, The Satanic Verses (1988), led to protests from Muslims in several countries, some of which were violent. Faced with death threats and a fatwā (religious edict) issued by Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, then Supreme Leader of Iran, which called for him to be killed, he spent nearly a decade largely underground, appearing in public only sporadically.

In June 2007, Rushdie was appointed a Knight Bachelor for services to literature. In 2007, he began a five-year term as distinguished writer in residence at Emory University.

TRANSCRIPT:
[B-roll: Demonstrators holding "McBush" and "Obama" signs and a handmade sign reading "IRAQ: WHAT EXIT STRATEGY? 4000+ Dead. For what?" and "McCain FLIP-FLOPS on BUSH TAX CUTS FOR THE RICH!"]

SPOKESWOMAN #1: "You know I actually asked for research on how much the state has had to pick up because the federal government spent most of our money on Iraq. And we've increased of we've had to spend on our veterans, including treatment for mental illness, tuition, etc. Because the federal government has not followed up doing the right thing for veterans. So what we have spent on veterans in the state of Colorado has increased dramatically because of the loss of the federal government."

SPOKESMAN: "Yeah I would just add, as a former budget analyst of the White House, you know, you look at the non-discretionary, non-military discretionary spending; we're talking about a small amount of where we use our money. If we want to talk about actually balancing the budget, we have to talk about getting out of Iraq and putting that money into our state and into our country to be able to balance our budget. We're spending so much money overseas; that's where we need to talk about saving money."

REPORTER: "Sen. McCain talks about nuclear power. [...] What do you guys think about nuclear power, especially in Colorado?"

SPOKESWOMAN #1: "Does he ever say where he wants to place it? No he never would. Because he'd lose that state in a heartbeat. So, you know, when he says something like that, ask him what state he's going to put a nuclear plant in, and [...] what governor's gonna accept it. So he can talk about it again. But, you know, what is the chance in reality of it actually happening? So, you know, again, they're talking about oil shale again."

JOHN MCCAIN: "[...] We will develop more clean energy. Nuclear power is the most dependable source of zero-emission energy we have. We will build at least 45 nuclear plants that will create over 700,000 good jobs to construct and operate them. And what's going to be done in Piketon in the Piketon plant is also going to be a big part of that."

We are in a historically unprecedented situation, says Leverett. U.S. military hegemony continues to be quite robust, but our standing and influence is in decline.

John McCain
Town Hall Meeting
07/09/08

TRANSCRIPT:
JOHN MCCAIN: "I did see a person over here with a 'no nukes' sign so maybe we can't start with you. Because obviously you know I am a supporter of nuclear power. [...]"

QUESTIONER: "[...] I live here in Portsmouth. And my father also worked in the Piketon plant and he also died young of cancer. He had 4 cancers. My mother died of cancer as well. And I feel strongly about getting the Piketon plant cleaned up and bringing alternative energy industry into Portsmouth [...] We've done this for 50 years. We deserve better. We don't want our young people to continue to have to work in a highly toxic industry. And I believe that a lot of people here probably feel the same way and are afraid to say anything. Because I know the outcome in my personal life has been very detrimental to me in fighting this nuclear industry."

MCCAIN: "I know I speak on behalf of all of us [...] and extend our sympathy at the loss of your parents. There's no way that I can provide proper consolation except to say to you that I believe that nuclear power is and can be safe. [...] We have sailed Navy ships around the world for more than 60 years with nuclear power plants on them. There has never been any recorded case that I know of that someone was either injured or killed or had any effects of, of those nuclear power plants. I know that there's been Three Mile Island. And we know about Chernoble. But I do believe that nuclear power is safe. [...] But the evidence that I have that I'd like to share with you, is that nuclear power is safe. And it is, I think, a vital part of our nation's energy future[...]

QUESTIONER: "One of the things that I've been striving for is to make sure that workers that go into the Piketon site are protected, and I haven't been able to get that affirmation from the NRC or the EPA or any of the DOE or any of the groups that are in charge of that cleanup and that site. And I think that's one of the things that many people are concerned about here.

MCCAIN: "Well I will (1) try to get that information from you, (2) myself try to contact the nuclear regulatory [...] commission and any other oversight organization and get the information [...] I promise you I will learn, and I will read the information that you send me, and I will act on it as I think would be appropriate."

People of Virginia rise up in a democratic fervor to oppose the coal-fired power plant proposed by Dominion Power. This plant would be extremely destructive to the local environment, not to mention the regional and international impacts that coal has because of its contribution to global warming.
