Well, it finally happened. We now have more contractors working for profit-driven companies in Iraq than soldiers. Take a moment to think about the impact of that. More men for hire (almost all men) then troops in this "war for freedom" or whatever the hell the latest name is. Shocking, infuriating, and maybe to be expected, when the war is launched by those driven by corporate culture and enthralled by corporate cronies. And yet how tragic. This war is now fully and blatantly being run by the companies. And what possible reasons can be given to keep this travesty going? We need to provide profit to the ledger of these companies. This is another sad and defining day, in a long string of them around this tragedy.

A report released yesterday by a key congressional committee describes Blackwater USA as an out of control outfit indifferent to Iraqi civilian casualties. Blackwater CEO Erik Prince is testifying today before a house panel, and said in a prepared opening statement, "Based on everything we currently know, the Blackwater team acted appropriately while operating in a very complex war zone on Sept. 16." It's hard to imagine how inappropriate behavior would be defined if the Sept 16th bloodbath is described as "appropriate."

Blackwater facing growing protest over new base

An article in Raw Story reveals Blackwater USA is facing growing resistance to a proposed 842-acre base in Potrero California which would include 15 firing ranges for automatic and semi-automatic weapons and small caliber guns, emergency vehicle operator's course the length of ten football fields, bunkhouses, commando-style training facilities, ship simulators and law enforcement training towers with rock climbing walls and platforms. Potrero, a small town of 850 located south east of San Diego is surrounded by Cleveland National Forest and is environmentally sensitive. Internal documents acquired by Raw Story reveal Blackwater indicated the bases' effect on the local eagle population as a "potential fatal flaw." Potrero property owner Dania Raum said the project site is a hidden valley filled with wetlands and various varieties of raptor birds. Golden eagles nest just 3,500 feet north of the site.
