John McCain played the race card first!

Andrew Sullivan, Chris Bodenner, and Eli Sanders all note that the McCain campaign's strategy on race is to (a) play the race card and then (b) accuse Obama of having played the race card.

The issue here, of course, is that John McCain claimed great umbrage at Barack Obama's lighthearted comment that Bush and McCain would emphasize that "he doesn't look like all those other presidents on the dollar bills."

But if John McCain thinks that comment was playing the race card, then why did he play it first? One month ago -- in late June -- a McCain ad superimposed Obama's visage on a one hundred dollar bill as part of an effort to mock his supposed 'presumptuousness.'

REPORTER: "Senator, can you explain why you and your campaign manager have specfically said that Obama played the race card with his comments the other day? And can you elaborate when you said you fought for equal rights for your entire life, what specifically you've done focusing on improving the lives of African Americans?"

JOHN MCCAIN: [looks uncomfortable] "Oh I, uh, first of all, um, [long pause] the- the first question-- you said, why am I--?"

REPORTER: "What it is--when your campaign manager--and you reiterated that you backed Davis in saying he played the race card."

MCCAIN: "I think his comments were clearly, were clearly with the race card. Because of what he said. Everybody can read his remarks and, in fact, his campaign retracted those remarks. So, I think it's very clear. And I was very disappointed, I was very disappointed at his comments. [...] So let's move on.

"I've supported legislation time after time that would provide equal opportunities for all Americans. I have supported lower taxes. I have supported increases in educational benefits. I have supported hundreds of pieces of legislation, which would help Americans obtain an equal opportunity in America. I am proud of that record, from fighting for the recognition of Dr. Martin Luther King's birthday in my state to sponsoring specifica legislation that would prevent discrimination in any shape or form in America today. And I am proud of that fight. I'd be glad to give you the legislative record of my efforts."

Richard Thompson Ford considers "The Race Card: How Bluffing About Bias Makes Race Relations Worse."

The George E. Osborne Professor of Law at Stanford Law School, Richard Thompson Ford has published regularly on civil rights, constitutional law, race relations, and antidiscrimination law. In his new book, he asks what Katrina victims waiting for federal disaster relief, millionaire rappers buying vintage champagne, Ivy League professors waiting for taxis, and ghetto hustlers trying to find steady work have in common, and answers that all have claimed to be victims of racism.

Few people these days express openly racist beliefs or defend bigoted motives. So lots of people are victims of bigotry, but no one's a bigot? Ford considers whether a lot of people are lying about their true beliefs and motivations, or if a lot of people are jumping to unwarranted conclusions or just playing the race card.
