Openly Gay Harvard Students Challenge "Don't Ask, Don't Tell"

In his "Generation Q" op-ed, New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman asserted that young activists today are a little "too quiet, too online" for their own good, and that clicks of a mouse cannot rival the vitality of an in-person movement. But what if young activists could combine the in-your-face nature of an offline campaign, with the internet's ability to spread their message to millions?

The Harvard Right to Serve Tour is using YouTube to do just that. As part of the the Tour, openly gay Harvard University students are visiting military recruitment centers across the Eastern Seaboard, trying to enlist – and uploading video footage of each encounter onto YouTube.

"We're trying to show the country the discriminatory practices that are in place, under 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell'," says lead campaign organizer and Harvard Divinity School student Jake Reitan. But in addition to that, the campaign is also demonstrating the power of what can happen when activists mix traditional tactics like sit-ins, sign-waving, and submitting to arrest, with new media methods like YouTube to amplify their cause.

JOHN MCCAIN: ". . . I thought one of the great injustices . . . one of the greatest injustices of the Vietnam war was that the poorest people of our society served and the wealthiest didn't. I thought that was a terrible injustice because wealthy people could avoid the draft. But, from a more practical standpoint, we now have the best-trained, most professional, most capable military in our history and it takes a long time to train 'em. That's why we enlist 'em for four years. And so it doesn't lend itself to a short-time situation. And the third thing is the military is better than it's ever been. These all-volunteer, young men and women are the very best of America [applause] and the best that's served. So why would we want to go back to a system that doesn't cause us to have the efficiency and professionalism and skills that the present-day, all-volunteer force has? But it's gotta be bigger. My friends, we have put a strain on the guard and reserve that everybody in this room knows about. I'll betcha everyone in this room knows someone who has served in Iraq or Afghanistan or their families. We've asked these guard people to go back and back and back. We've got to have a bigger Army and Marine Corps . . . We've got to ease this burden on the Guard and Reserve. I would be very reluctant to [enact a draft] for all of those reasons. I also want to encourage more young Americans to serve. I really do. . . I think obviously service in the military is of the most importance."

If the Army is Enlisting Convicts, Why Not DREAMERS?

One pathway to legal status in the DREAM Act is enlistment in the army for at least two years. If given the chance, there are many undocumented students who would join the army and the marines in a heartbeat. A lot of these students have wanted to join even before they'd ever heard of the DREAM Act or had even thought of joining as a possible way to earn legal status. The army needs more soldiers, and there are willing recruits, but without the passage of the DREAM Act, their undocumented status is an unfortunate roadblock.

Recruit is at an all time low; low enough that the army and marines are letting in more and more convicts because of the soldier shortage.

According to Reuters,

"The Army, the largest branch of the U.S. military, gave felony waivers to 511 recruits last year, up from 249 in 2006, according to the figures released by a congressional panel. The Marine Corps granted 350 waivers, up from 208 the year before."

DREAMERS are being punished for breaking a law they did not know they were breaking - crossing the border or visa overstay. For some reason this crime (a misdemeanor according to the law), which occurred while they were minors, is unforgivable and cannot be overlooked. Though both the army and the marines is willing to overlook and waive adults convicted of assault, burglary, manslaughter, and sex crimes.

It just doesn't make sense. I am all for giving people second chances, but there was a reason why at one point, people charged with these crimes weren't allowed to join. If Congress had gotten their act together and passed the DREAM Act, perhaps the country wouldn't be reduced to enlisting the convicted.

General Secretary of UCL Union, Sam Godwin has been suspended from duty. No justification has been given for this action and the nature of the charges against Sam have not been made clear as is stipulated in the standing orders for disciplinary procedures.

Sam has been under attack recently for her chairing of the Annual General Meeting of the students union (March 5th) at which motions to twin with Palestinian universities and to end military recruitment at freshers fayre were passed. These democratically passed motions have resulted in a backlash from students who oppose them and the tabloid press, but rather than attempting to overturn them through the democratic channels of the union, members of the executive of UCL Union are underhandedly attempting to get the whole meeting annuled by first suspending Sam and then passing an illegal motion to governance committee instructed it to overturn the resolutions of the general meeting.

Inaccurate reports of that meeting have been circulated which ignore key facts - such as the fact that illegal attempts to call quoracy while leaving the room were made.

The fact that despite all the attacks on Sam no reason was given for suspending her shows that no misconduct can be found in Sam's chairing of the meeting where she was faced with heckling, numerous attempts at disruption and a vote of no-confidence which was not upheld by the floor.

It is therefore obvious that this suspension is politically motivated. It is part of a wider attempt to get the entire proceedings of the agm overturned (including all the motions voted on democratically by ucl students) orchestrated by a faction of students who disagree with the way the votes went.

It is vital that UCL students stand up for our elected General Secretary against this shameful, unsubstantiated, and politically motivated attack and defend the democratic process at our union. We must resist any sinister attempts by the union exec to undermine decisions made at the AGM, the most democratic body of the union at which students can directly participate in influencing union policy. We the undersigned find this action against Sam disgraceful and demand that she be reinstated.

The US military says it has met its recruitment goals for 2007. However, signing new soldiers is getting more difficult, with an unpopular war in Iraq and open-ended commitments both there and in Afghanistan.

New figures reveal there has been a 40 per cent drop in African-Americans signing up for the army. The Pentagon wants to expand the size of the army to 547,000 soldiers by the year 2010, and are counting on Hispanics to fill the gap. To do so, recruiters are turning to incentives to bolster their numbers. Mike Kirsch explores the sometimes questionable tactics being used to entice Latino recruits into the US army.

"They [the Navy] have these kids so brainwashed": A personal story

Please bear with me on this one. It's long, but I feel it's important and would love to hear your thoughts:

One of my students recently graduated and enlisted in the Navy just prior to graduation. He is a black belt in karate (read: extremely fit, making him a desirable enlistee), bright as they come, and a sweetheart. A very trusting, naive sweetheart.

Prior to graduation, he approached me about his enlistment, convinced that he would get a job as a Cryptological Technician (Technical) or CTT. He started doing research online and read up on everything he could about cryptology; he even brought his decoding efforts to school in eager anticipation of his impending career. He was as excited as a ponytailed hippie comedian with a black belt could be.

I tried my best to lower his expectations, warning him that I'd seen and read reports that revealed recruiting techniques were often designed to entice potential recruits, but bait and switch would win the day, disappointing, even disillusioning, idealistic signees. They'd be placed where the military wanted or needed them, despite any verbal or written promises.

I warned my young friend that his high expectations were very unlikely to be met and to reconsider. I said this because his only reason for enlisting was the CTT job.

He ignored my concerns.

When my student (I'll call him Mike) spoke with recruiters this past spring, they told him, based on his high test scores, that he would be guaranteed a job as a CTT. They wrote up a contract to that effect and gave him $5,000 as a signing bonus.

On April 7, 2007, he signed on the dotted line.

On the flip, you'll see that my fears were justified.

DREAM Act or Draft Act?

The Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors Act, or DREAM Act has garnered a large amount of support from immigration rights activists and is by and large a bipartisan bill – and that’s because the bill is good, in principle. The bill would allow immigrants who entered the country five years or more before the bill's enactment and before they were 16 years old to receive provisional U.S. residency. Permanent residency would be granted if, within six years of obtaining conditional residency, the immigrant graduates from a two-year college, completes two years in a bachelor's degree program, performs 910 hours of volunteer community service, or serves in the U.S. armed forces for two years. Wait – what?!!

With a war raging in Iraq and what seems like the proposed exit strategy that takes us through Iran – our troops are tired, they need rest and they need to come home. Where will the reinforcements come from for this never ending war on terror? The DREAM Act? If it passes – you bet ‘cha. “An estimated 68,000 active-duty military personnel were born in foreign countries, and 8,000 others enlist every year. That compounded with the fact that recruiting Latinos has become a top priority, the DREAM Act seems like a good bill that morphed into a backwards draft.
