Secondary residences make up two-thirds of the housing stock, keeping affordable housing out of reach for much of the local community. This includes much of the rapidly expanding Mexican immigrant population employed to construct the mansions. Although the mid-sized town is far from the Mexican border 12% its official population was born in Latin America, well above the state average. Locals believe the percentage is closer to 1/3 and growing with many of the new immigrants having entered the country illegally drawn to the town by its food processing plants. Iowa voted for Gore in 2000, but swung to Bush in 2004.
