Town Hall Meeting

TRANSCRIPTION
QUESTIONER: [...] I'm not sure what you think the impact to our environment is based on [offshore drilling].

JOHN MCCAIN: [...] I have—I'm aware that off the coast of Louisiana and Texas there are oil rigs as we well know and those rigs have survived very successfully, the impacts of hurricanes (Hurricane Katrina as far as Louisiana is concerned). There are methods of drilling now, which are on a slant, which also can reach into existing or undiscovered oil assets and other places.

There is dramatically improved technology in this area and I'm not saying that there will never be another oil spill. California: they still remember the Santa Barbara experience and, of course, all of us remember Exxon-Valdez, but I think the technology and the safety is there today that would give us great confidence that we would be able to exploit these offshore resources and still maintain environmental safety [...], but I also think, my friends that, if you send $700 billion overseas every year and some of that money ends up in the hands of a terrorist organization, you are also running a risk.

You're also running a risk of one of these terrorist organizations doing—committing a terrorist act in the United States of America and some of our vulnerable areas obviously are energy supplies so I think we have to kind of balance all of these priorities as well. [...]

QUESTIONER: I would just like to see more emphasis on our renewable resources that we have out there. [...]

MCCCAIN: [...] I'm supportive of and the government is doing some pure research and development on a lot of this technology, wind, tide, solar, and others, but I also—and this is where Mr. [T. Boone] Pickens and I disagree a little bit—I don't think we can rely on those to be as much of the solution as some people think.

We all love solar. Is there anybody that doesn't love solar power? But when we look at the actual contributions, compared with the increased demand for energy that's gonna be part of American in the next 20 years, it does not meet those demands, much less the existing requirements that we have.
MCCAIN: "When you say wind solar and tide, most every expert that I know says that, if you maximize that in every possible way, the contribution that that would make given the present state of technology is very small, is very small. It's not a large contribution.

It's wonderful, it's great to have it, I encourage it everywhere. I hope everyone will, for Christmas, buy their family a solar panel. But, that would be exciting. But they, but, I'd be glad to send you the figures that there's the amount of--even if we gave it the absolute maximum, uh, wind, solar and tide, uh, etc. The clean tech - the truly clean technologies don't work."

On March 27, 2008, Rep. Jay Inslee and Bracken Hendricks discussed their book, Apollo's Fire: Igniting America's Clean Energy Economy, at Google's Mountain View, CA headquarters as part of the Authors@Google program.

In 1961, President John F. Kennedy ignited America's Apollo Project and sparked a revolution in space exploration. Today the New Apollo Energy Project is poised to revolutionize the production of energy and thereby save our planet. The nation that built the world's most powerful rockets, its most advanced computers, and its most sophisticated life support systems is ready to create the world's most powerful solar energy systems, its most advanced wind energy turbines, and its most sophisticated hybrid cars. This will result in nothing less than a second American Revolution.

Jay Inslee is a Representative in the United States House of Representatives, representing the First District of the State of Washington, in the Seattle area. Bracken Hendricks is a senior fellow with the Center for American Progress and former executive director of the Apollo Alliance, an organization of environmental organizations, businesses, and labor organizations dedicated to building a new energy future for America.

Typical power plants in the UK are only 38% efficient. By the time we use electricity in our homes and offices, we've lost nearly 80 per cent of the usable energy inside the fossil fuels we burn. Combined heat and power plants use heat which would otherwise be wasted to heat local homes and businesses.
Biogas typically refers to a gas produced by the biological breakdown of organic matter in the absence of oxygen. Comprised primarily of methane and carbon dioxide, biogas originates from biogenic material and is a type of biofuel. It's a product of the anaerobic digestion or fermentation of biodegradable materials such as manure or sewage, and can be used in CHP plants

CHP is the heart of an efficient, decentralised energy system. It's the most efficient way possible to burn fuel because so little energy is lost as waste heat. That's how CHP plants in Denmark can reach up to 95 per cent efficiency.

Because the heat needs to be captured and piped around the local district, CHP plants are usually sited in the towns and cities where the electricity and heat will be used. This makes it more efficient for electricity generation as well as heat; very little energy is lost in transmission.
Author and activist Ted Nordhaus addresses issues in diversity and the environmental justice movement.

-----

From the Death of Environmentalism to the Politics of Possibility with discussants Michael Shellenberger and Ted Nordhaus. Adam Werbach moderates the discussion.

In October 2004, Shellenberger and Nordhaus argued that environmentalism was incapable of dealing with global warming and must die for a new ecological politics to be born. Now, they will make their case for a new "politics of possibility" to replace the old "politics of limits" - from environmentalism to liberalism to conservatism - grounded in changing social values and an expansive new vision of the future - Commonwealth Club of California

Ted Nordhaus is an author, researcher, and political strategist. He is co-author of Break Through and The Death of Environmentalism. Over the last twenty years, Ted has run major campaigns and initiatives for a large assortment of environmental and progressive political causes including the Public Interest Research Groups (PIRGs), the Sierra Club, Environmental Defense, and Clean Water Action.

He also served as the Campaign Director for Share the Water, a coalition of environmentalists, fishermen, farmers, and urban water agencies advocating reform of federal water policies in California, Executive Director of the Headwaters Sanctuary Project, and as a partner and political strategist with Next Generation and Evans/McDonough strategy and research firms serving political campaigns and environmental organizations. Ted holds a B.A. in history from the University of California.
