Pulitzer Prize-winning author and columnist Tom Friedman criticizes John McCain's focus on offshore drilling during the 2008 U.S. Presidential election, arguing that increased domestic oil production will do little to impact American energy independence.

-----

In this talk, New York Time columnist and author Tom Friedman exposes the irrationality of U.S. policies that promote consumption of vast quantities of oil.

Friedman stresses that the United States must lead efforts to develop energy alternatives that would 1) free us from our dependence on petro-dictatorships and 2) help preserve the earth, oceans, and biodiversity.

The program concludes with a Q and A between Friedman and Editor of The New Republic, Frank Foer - Sixth and I Synagogue

Thomas L. Friedman, a columnist for The New York Times, is a three-time Pulitzer Prize winner and a member of the Pulitzer Prize Board. Friedman was bureau chief for The Times in Beirut and Jerusalem before writing, From Beirut to Jerusalem, which won the National Book Award for non-fiction. His book, The Lexus and the Olive Tree won the 2000 Overseas Press Club award for best nonfiction book on foreign policy. His latest work, The World is Flat: A Brief History of the 21st Century, won the inaugural Goldman Sachs/Financial Times Business Book of the Year award. He has a B.A. in Mediterranean studies from Brandeis University and a Master of Philosophy degree in Modern Middle East studies from Oxford.

MCCAIN: "On the issue of safe or unsafe. We have sailed navy ships around the world for more than 60 years, with nuclear power plants on them. We have never had an accident, we have never had a problem. [...] So I question anybody's assertion that it's not safe

"The utilities are gonna meet them, and they're gonna meet them one way or another. And right now, unless they have some kind of alternative, I can tell you their plans are coal-fired plants and obviously that is something I wouldn't like to see.

"I do believe that obviously nuclear power is a - is one of those issues that we need to address because if we're not going to move forward with nuclear power, fine. If that's what the decision of this nation is and we don't wanna do what the French are doing and other countries are doing - all right. But, someone has got, in order to get me off the subject, is going to have to show me a way to supply those energy needs that is really with - can be done with available technology."

Panelists Eric Ryan, Nathan Shedroff and Rajan Dev discuss "conscious consumerism" and its role in promoting sustainable business practices.

-----

Conscious Capitalism with panelists Nathan Shedroff, Brandon Schauer, Rajan Dev, and Eric Ryan.

Why are there 50 varieties of toothpaste on grocery store aisles? How does this fit into the world's heightened awareness of the need for sustainable business practices, and our own growing individual needs for self-actualization and meaning? Leaders in business, design and innovation will debate why a deeper understanding of human nature needs to be central to a 21st century business strategy and how it can challenge people's attitudes toward consumerism - The Commonwealth Club of California

At age 27, Eric Ryan founded method, a San Francisco-based consumer goods company that has reinvented homecare products with an innovative branding and product design approach. In five short years, method has challenged some of the world’s largest multinationals in home cleaning, laundry, personal care and air care to become the fastest growing consumer products company in the US.

Nathan Shedroff has been an information and interface designer for over twelve years. He focuses on developing online experiences, building online brand strategies and business models, and developing online communities. Throughout his career, he has worked in several different media and authored several books on multimedia, computers, and information. His electronic experience spans CD-ROMs, kiosks, published titles, application development, and online experiences.

Prior to joining Hot Studio as Chief Operating Officer, Rajan was the General Manager of the San Francisco office of Modern Media/Digitas for nearly six years. In that role, Rajan served clients such as Hewlett Packard, Intel, Sprint PCS, Michelin North America, Amgen and Charles Schwab delivering interactive marketing strategy and integrated marketing solutions (web, email and print).

Author and environmentalist Bill McKibben criticizes sustained economic growth, a policy goal, he argues, whose costs outweigh its benefits.

-----

Bill McKibben discusses his groundbreaking new book "Deep Economy: The Wealth of Communities and the Durable Future."

McKibben focuses on the point where environmental and economic issues intersect, offering revolutionary ideas for approaching these problems. This is one of the most important books to be published on issues relating to global warming. McKibben is the author of "Hundred Dollar Holiday," "Maybe One," and "Hope, Human and Wild" - Book Passage

Kansas Senator and Republican Presidential candidate Sam Brownback links America's pursuit of energy independence to the broader international struggle for human rights.

-----

The Set America Free Coalition's Primary Energy '08: Presidential Candidate Series with 2008 Republican Presidential candidate Senator Sam Brownback (R-KS).

The goal of Primary Energy '08 series is to elevate and invigorate the energy policy debate in the 2008 presidential elections by providing leading presidential candidates an exclusive stage to publicly present their energy program and interact with a select group of energy experts, media and public opinion shapers.

Samuel Dale Brownback (born September 12, 1956) is the senior United States senator from the U.S. state of Kansas. On January 20, 2007 he announced his intention to seek the Republican Party's nomination for President in the 2008 Presidential election.
