His book, The Lexus and the Olive Tree won the 2000 Overseas Press Club award for best nonfiction book on foreign policy. His latest work, The World is Flat: A Brief History of the 21st Century, won the inaugural Goldman Sachs/Financial Times Business Book of the Year award. He has a B.A. in Mediterranean studies from Brandeis University and a Master of Philosophy degree in Modern Middle East studies from Oxford.

Jesse Francis "Jeff" Bingaman Jr. (born October 3, 1943) is the junior U.S. Senator from New Mexico. He has been in the Senate since 1983 and is a member of the Democratic Party. Bingaman was Attorney General of New Mexico from 1978 until his election to the U.S. Senate in 1982, when he defeated Republican incumbent and former astronaut Harrison Schmitt. He was re-elected in 1988, 1994, 2000, and 2006.

Ed Markey is a Representative from Massachusetts; born in Malden, Middlesex County, Mass., July 11, 1946; attended Immaculate Conception Grammar School, Malden, Mass.; graduated from Malden Catholic High School, Malden, Mass., 1964; B.A., Boston College, Chestnut Hill, Mass., 1968; J.D., Boston College Law School, Chestnut Hill, Mass., 1972; lawyer, private practice; United States Army Reserve, 1968-1973; member of the Massachusetts state house of representatives, 1973-1976; elected as a Democrat to the Ninety-fourth Congress by special election to fill the vacancy caused by the death of United States Representative Torbert H. Macdonald, reelected to the sixteen succeeding Congresses (November 2, 1976-present).

Mr. Bennett was Director of Communications and Public Affairs at Americans for Gun Safety for three years. He went to AGS after serving for the entire second Clinton term in the White House, where he was Deputy Assistant to the President for Intergovernmental Affairs, the leading White House liaison to the nation's governors. Before that, Mr. Bennett was Trip Director and Assistant Counsel to the Vice President, where he traveled with Vice President Gore and managed the traveling staff. Mr. Bennett has served in various capacities on the Dukakis, Clinton '92 and Clinton '96 campaigns.

Carl Pope is the Executive Director of the Sierra Club, an American environmental organization founded by conservationist pioneer John Muir in 1892. Pope was appointed to his position as Executive Director in 1992, the club's centennial.

"The utilities are gonna meet them, and they're gonna meet them one way or another. And right now, unless they have some kind of alternative, I can tell you their plans are coal-fired plants and obviously that is something I wouldn't like to see.

"I do believe that obviously nuclear power is a - is one of those issues that we need to address because if we're not going to move forward with nuclear power, fine. If that's what the decision of this nation is and we don't wanna do what the French are doing and other countries are doing - all right. But, someone has got, in order to get me off the subject, is going to have to show me a way to supply those energy needs that is really with - can be done with available technology."
