Choice: True Stories of Birth, Contraception, Infertility, Adoption, Single Parenthood, and Abortion attempts to raise the discourse on reproductive choice, which often devolves to cliches and name-calling, by posing the question--what is it like to make any sort of reproductive choice? What is it truly like to use birth control, the morning after pill, use a sperm bank, have an abortion, adopt a child, give a child up for adoption, bring a pregnancy to term? In these 22 stunningly honest essays, writers describe their experiences making some of these decisions, as well as many others. Established writers such as Francine Prose, Jaquelyn Mitchard, Pam Houston, Carolyn Ferrell, Ann Hood, Deborah Macdowell, and Sarah Messer contribute essays, along with emerging writers such as Kimi Faxon Hemingway, Stephanie Anderson, and Ashley Talley.

Karen E. Bender is the author of the novel Like Normal People. Her fiction has appeared magazines including The New Yorker, Granta, Zoetrope, Ploughshares, Story, The Harvard Review, and has been anthologized in Best American Short Stories, Best American Mystery Stories and twice in the Pushcart Prize series. Her stories have been read on the Selected Shorts program on NPR and she has received grants from the Rona Jaffe Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts. She has taught creative writing at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and at the Antioch LA MFA program.

A new Gallup poll has found that since Hillary Clinton exited the presidential stage last weekend, Barack Obama's lead among women voters has jumped 8 points. He now leads John McCain among women 51-38 percent, but while this 13-point margin is a strong sign, it's surprising that more women aren't backing Obama given McCain's abysmal reproductive rights record.

Or perhaps it's not so surprising, since a recent Planned Parenthood Action Fund poll concluded that half of female voters in 16 battleground states simply don't know the facts about McCain's views on women's health issues. They don't know, for example, that McCain voted anti-choice 123 out of 128 times in the Senate. They don't know that McCain opposes birth control. Nor do they know that McCain would overturn Roe v. Wade, effectively criminalizing abortion.

Why Do Women Give McCain a Zero?

John McCain's record on reproductive rights couldn't be more appalling. There, we said it! We said it because the corporate media won't confront McCain on the real issues in this election. They won't tell you, for instance, that McCain has consistently received a big fat zero from NARAL on its pro-choice scorecard. Nor will they tell you that McCain has flip-flopped on Roe v. Wade and now supports overturning this all-too-crucial case.

Because the corporate media has failed to do its job, we have to work extra hard to do ours. And so we've created McCain's Clinic, a sneak peek at what a women's health clinic could look like if McCain were elected. Yes, we're presenting McCain's reproductive rights record through comedy, but our hope is that it will help get our point across effectively.

We must spread awareness about McCain's record now, especially considering a recent Planned Parenthood Action Fund poll found that half of female voters in 16 battleground states don't know enough about McCain's views on reproductive health. What's more, one in four pro-choice McCain supporters would be less likely to vote for McCain after knowing he opposes Roe v. Wade and backs abstinence-only education.
