Republican Rep. John Doolittle, who is under investigation in a congressional lobbying scandal, plans to announce Thursday that he'll retire from Congress at the end of his current term, according to a Republican official who spoke with Doolittle.

The development comes as Doolittle, in his ninth term, faced growing political pressure from fellow Republicans who considered him a liability because of his involvement, along with his wife Julie, in the Jack Abramoff influence-peddling investigation. House Republicans, still smarting from losing control of Congress in 2006, are eager to put that ethics taint behind them.

Rep. Richard Baker (R), the longest serving member of Louisiana’s delegation, is considering retiring to head the Managed Funds Association, the trade group representing the lucrative hedge-fund industry.

If he decides to step down, the 11-term veteran would be the 19th Republican to announce plans to leave Congress this year. His retirement also would further weaken the GOP’s chances of regaining control of the House majority, which they lost to Democrats in November 2006.

He'll decide in 7-10 days. If he doesn't take the job, he'll run for re-election. If he does, he'll leave in February.

Here's a fascinating little tidbit:

Baker won reelection with 83 percent of the vote that year. But Republicans may have trouble holding onto the seat. President Bush won the district in 2004 with 59 percent of the vote, but Hurricane Katrina victims moved there in large numbers and have altered the political terrain.

You can move 'em, but you can't stop 'em from voting. You might want to remember that the next time there's a disaster and you ignore the victims, okay BushCo?

The Simplistic Right Wing Mind

Bill Kristol posits, as many on the right have, that our invasion of Iraq is what caused Iran to stop its nuclear weapons program.

Let me count the ways this is stupid. First of all, if anything, Iran would have determined, as North Korea did at the time, that nukes were necessary to defend themselves and beefed up their program instead of drawing down.

Not having WMD worked out just swell for Iraq, right?

Second, diplomacy, that thing that Bill Clinton and yes George H.W. Bush practiced, is what brought North Korea back to the table and eventually convinced Libya to give up their weapons program. Not the fear of our attacking them and failing as miserably as The Decider has in Iraq.

Here is Think Progress on this silly right-wing notion:

Libya did not give up its nuclear weapons program in 2003 because of the Iraq war. As Center for American Progress Senior Fellow Joseph Cirincione noted, negotiations with Libya stretched "over three administrations," resulting in a deal that "cost little, caused no deaths, and was 100 percent effective." At the time, UK Prime Minister Tony Blair called the news a "victory for diplomacy."

Conservatives think they're entitled to their own opinions and facts. It is why this administration and six years of a Republican Congress failed at literally everything.

Well, except increasing the demand for hookers and raising gas prices while whoring themselves out to Big Oil.....

The beat goes on as yet another veteran House Republican announced plans to retire late today. This time it was Rep. Jim McCrery of Louisiana, a ten-term member and fixture on the tax-writing Ways and Means Committee.

Hmmm, looks like McCrery has a past with our friend Mike Rogers. Wonder if this had anything to do with his "retirement"?

That's how I first came to hear about Congressman James McCrery of Louisiana. I learned how McCrery's hypocrisy was exposed was a dozen years ago, when Chris Bull, writing for The Advocate, laid out one of the most thoroughly reported examples of how gay men live double lives in and out of the Capitol's halls of power.
