Talk about electoral "dirty tricks" from the same GOP as tries to out-Pilate Pilate by blaming Democrats and affiliated "activist groups" such as ACORN as part of their distracting strategems--by way of the AP (ultimately via Yahoo News):

MADISON, Wis. - Four employees hired by a temporary staffing agency to encourage absentee voting for Republican presidential candidate John McCain say they were instructed to tell people they were GOP volunteers.

Kevin Kennedy, director of the state's Government Accountability Board, said he received complaints that the workers were told to mislead voters into believing they were volunteers. The complaints have been forwarded to local district attorneys, he said, but it's unclear whether the alleged deception would be a crime.

The employees told The Associated Press on Monday they were hired by Allstaff Labor Group to go door to door in the Milwaukee suburbs locating McCain supporters and distributing absentee ballot request forms. Allstaff recruited them under a contract with a consulting firm hired by the Republican Party of Wisconsin to run its absentee ballot program.

The workers claim they were told to say they were GOP volunteers even though they were getting paid $10 an hour. They were required to sign agreements stating they would not publicly discuss their work but said they decided to speak out because they were angry they had not been paid for the last few days. They claim they are owed between $200 and $300.

GOP spokeswoman Kirsten Kukowski confirmed there was a dispute over how many hours the employees worked and said the party's vendor was working to resolve it.

She said the workers spent three weeks distributing the forms to McCain supporters around the state. The program's managers were instructed to "accurately represent the program" to the workers, Kukowski said.

The paid employees, who were working at GOP offices alongside volunteers, may have picked up scripts intended for volunteers, she said.

"We did not instruct them to misrepresent themselves," Kukowski wrote in an e-mail.

Allstaff representatives did not return phone messages seeking comment.

The agency was only one of many hired by GOP consulting firm Lincoln Strategy Group to run the party's absentee ballot request distribution program.

"I told the Republican Party and Allstaff I wanted to know why we were lying to these residents," said Loyalty Dixon, 26, who worked in Waukesha for about two weeks. "I said, `Isn't that fraudulent?' They didn't give me a good explanation. They said, `You guys know you're getting paid. Don't worry about it.'"

She recalled getting praised by people for being a McCain supporter. Some even asked whether she was getting paid, she said.

"We had to lie to these people and say we were volunteers," she said.

Three other employees shared similar stories.

"They had us say, `I'm volunteering for the Republican Party of Wisconsin," said Marquis Mayes, 23. "I asked them, why would we say we were volunteers and we're not? They didn't have an answer for that."

Maybe it was time for the Proper Channels to investigate, especially if such reeks of election-related frauds.

===========================

Calm whisper of the praying which heighth of the celebration noise you inform: The Exaggerator (... and forget thou not The Exaggerator Collection)

Editorial from The Capital Times (cyberspace, via Madison, WI) explaining the "why and wherefore" of why the GOP's rank-and-file should distance themselves from the John McCain/Sarah Palin ticket for the sake of Party Unity as much as the Greater Good of the Nation:

The Capital Times was founded in 1917 as a maverick Republican newspaper. Our purpose was to support the dissenting political tradition of Robert M. La Follette and the Wisconsin progressive movement, which in those days existed entirely within the confines of the Republican Party.

Across the years, The Capital Times has fought to keep alive the tradition of maverick Republicanism. We have even supported candidates with whom we did not entirely agree in hopes of renewing the party of Lincoln's historic commitment to civil rights and civil liberties, to the rule of law and constitutional governance, to the conservation ethic of Teddy Roosevelt, to the responsible domestic and foreign policies of Dwight Eisenhower.

As 2000's Wisconsin Republican primary between Arizona Sen. John McCain and Texas Gov. George W. Bush approached, we urged voters to cast ballots for McCain. We did not agree with McCain, especially on questions of military adventurism abroad. But in his commitment to bipartisan reform initiatives -- often advanced with Wisconsin Sen. Russ Feingold -- as well as his relative moderation on some social issues, we recognized evidences of a return to the rational Republicanism of old.

In 2000, McCain campaigned as a refreshing alternative to the broken politics of both major parties. Had he won the nomination and the presidency, America might have taken a different course.

But McCain lost. And, in defeat, he surrendered to the forces he once battled. During the first years of George W. Bush's dangerous presidency, McCain retained something of himself. He broke with the president on spending issues, stem cell research and climate change. And we celebrated his dissents. But slowly, the senator began to compromise not merely with Bush and the most extreme elements of the Republican Party but with his own best instincts.

By 2004, McCain was a tragic figure. He campaigned on behalf of Bush and Cheney, men for whom he had expressed appropriate disdain. He became a willing tool of White House political czar Karl Rove, who just four years earlier had orchestrated crude smear campaigns against McCain. The senator, who had once seemed so vibrant and alive with possibility, made himself over as the hollow man of American politics.

McCain mortgaged his soul to his own ambition in 2004. He had fought for the future of his party and his country in 2000, and he got beat. A stronger, better man would have rallied for another battle. But McCain gave up, not just on himself but on the struggle to renew the Republican Party. This year, as he bids again for the presidency, McCain does so with Rove acolytes managing his campaign. He has aligned his candidacy with the extremists he once battled, selecting a uniquely unfit anti-abortion firebrand, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, as his running mate.

If the McCain/Palin ticket were to prevail on Nov. 4, it would not be a win for the maverick Republicanism that McCain championed in 2000. It would be the final victory of the elements of the party that McCain once fought, and that serious conservatives have come to recognize as a threat to the country's financial stability and global prestige.

Candidates never govern better than they run. And John McCain has campaigned for president this year as a crude caricature of the man he once was. His willingness to do so confirms a desperation to attain the presidency at any cost to his own reputation and to the civility of our politics that should be recognized as disqualifying both by the Democrats who might be expected to oppose his candidacy and by Republicans who cherish their party's history and potential.

It is for that reason that responsible Republicans are giving up on McCain.

Congressman Wayne Gilchrest, R-Md., once one of McCain's most consistent allies in the House, worries aloud about the senator's "recklessness" and says he will vote for Democrat Barack Obama.

Former Rhode Island Sen. Lincoln Chafee argues that Obama -- not McCain -- is the genuine fiscal conservative in this year's presidential race. Speaking of the working relationship he has developed with the Democratic senator from Illinois, the former Republican senator says "we're fiscally conservative, we care about revenues, matching expenditures."

Former Iowa Congressman Jim Leach explains that partisanship must sometimes take a back seat to patriotism. "For me," Leach says, "the national interest comes before party concerns, particularly internationally. We do need a new direction in American policy, and Obama has a sense of that. He recognizes that a long-term occupation of Iraq is not only expensive, it's extremely dangerous to the American interests."

"I (have) no doubt that a lot of Republicans and independents are going to be attracted to his call for a new era of non-ideological, bipartisan decision-making," adds the Republican stalwart.

Leach is on to something. In February, when Wisconsin held its presidential primaries, Obama swept Ripon, the solidly Republican community where the Grand Old Party was founded in 1854. Indeed, Obama collected more votes than McCain and all his Republican rivals combined. This fall, polls tell us that more than 10 percent of Wisconsin Republicans have already decided to back Obama, and that many more are considering doing so. They are making the right choice.

For Republicans who care about their party and their country, it is right to consider voting for Barack Obama. Rejecting the cynical political machinations of John McCain and Sarah Palin will not destroy the Republican Party. It will free the party in particular and American politics in general to seek a better balance and the higher ground.

Leaping partisan boundaries can be difficult. We know. This newspaper took some heat when it backed McCain in 2000, just as we have been criticized for endorsing Republicans such as Fond du Lac Congressman Tom Petri.

But sometimes the political stars align in a manner that makes the leap not just appropriate but necessary. As Wisconsin Republicans ponder that necessity, we recommend to them an assessment offered by Douglas Kmiec, who headed the Office of Legal Counsel during the Republican administrations of Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush:

"President Reagan often said his proudest achievement was making America feel good about itself again. Sen. Obama is trying to give us genuine reason to have that feeling again," says Kmiec. "Indeed, he may have already partially succeeded. Having taught several generations of students over 35 years, I have never seen young people more alive and interested in the political process. His witness is encouraging them to look to civic and public involvement as a way of finding their own purpose -- a purpose that they intuitively want to be in service to others."

That purpose is not confined merely to the young, nor to the partisans of one party. It is an American purpose, a purpose wise Republicans have embraced for a century and a half. Wisconsin Republicans -- who by virtue of their party's founding in this state are charged with guarding its best traditions and highest values -- should express that purpose by joining independents and Democrats in voting Nov. 4 to elect Barack Obama as America's next president.

But will it be a case of "easier said than done," reader?

==========================

Calm whisper of the praying which heighth of the celebration noise you inform: The Exaggerator (and forget thou not The Exaggerator Collection)

So much for the GOP being the defenders of Traditional Morals, Decency and Common Sense, as well as Family Values--let RawStory.com (who is owed a hat tip for making the video known) elaborate:

A Republican councilman in Columbia, SC was arrested for drunken driving in July, the third DUI arrest for Paul Lindemann, who is currently running for reelection.

His local paper, the Rock Hill Herald, has now obtained a police video of the arrest through a Freedom of Information Act request and has made it public. According to the police report, Lindemann was "highly intoxicated" and "significantly impaired" and had nearly run into two motorcyclists several times.

In the video, Lindemann agrees to take a sobriety test but repeatedly fails to get through the alphabet, attempting instead to segue from "W" back to "H." He has even more trouble counting backwards from 32 to 18, stammering, "32-31-32-30 -- 31-32-31-32-33-33 -- 31-32-30-29 -- 19-18-17-16-18 -- 20-21-22."

He is then arrested.

A month following his arrest, Lindemann was seen driving to a City Council meeting, even though his license had been suspended. He offered the reporter who approached him a flurry of conflicting explanations for why he was allowed to drive, all of them apparently false.

"I'm going to get everything resolved with the charge, and we're going to win in November as well," Lindemann insisted after the video was released. He also suggested that vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin's current problems may help him, because "people have started to recognize that everybody who's running for political office is as human as those sitting back home."

Lindemann's case is reminiscent of that of New York City Republican Congressman Vito Fossella, who announced after a drunk driving arrest last spring that he would not be running this fall. However, there are currently rumors that Fossella, too, is plotting to get back on the ticket.

Let this be a warning to those candidates identifying with the GOP trying to get out of a Crime Against Morality....

========================

"Don't let 'em fool you, bro; read (and shop) The Exaggerator @ any and every online opportunity...." (Now with its very own CafePress-powered e-boutique, The Exaggerator Collection)

Thanks to RawStory.com for this particular vid, which it prefaces thus:

Election dirty tricks have been known to backfire in the past, and it may be happening again in 2008. According to the author of How to Rig an Election: Confessions of a Republican Operative, an alleged scheme to prevent voters who have encountered foreclosure proceedings on their homes from voting in November is "going to work against the Republicans."

Last week, the Michigan Messenger detailed a plan by the Macomb County, Michigan Republican party to challenge voters whose names appear on foreclosure lists, describing it as one among numerous such GOP plans to challenge African-Americans and other likely Democratic voters on Election Day in crucial swing states such as Michigan and Ohio.

Olbermann was joined in his discussion of the story by Allen Raymond, who came by his expertise on vote-rigging the hard way, having been imprisoned in 2006 for his involvement in an illegal GOP phone-jamming operation during the 2002 elections.

Raymond explained that this threatened use of foreclose lists is a new form of what is called "vote caging," which has traditionally meant that "you essentially send a first-class letter to a hoursehold [sic] where you suspect that that person no longer lives there but where they're still registered to vote. That letter comes back. ... Somebody [at the local polling place] then challenges that vote if that person comes in to vote."

Vote caging first became notorious during the 2004 presidential election, when it was allegedly used against predominently black voters in Florida.

Olbermann asked Raymond whether the foreclosure scheme was "a big play" that might actually prevent some people from voting on Election Day or just an attempt to scare off potential voters through media coverage.

Raymond suggested in response that "ironically, it's actually something that the Obama campaign can use now to gin up intensity.... It's a bit of a ju-jitsu move. It's going to work against the Republicans."

Joe Biden has already made use of the story, saying durng a speech in Michigan, "I was told yesterday that there's a Republican County Chairman right here in your state, Michigan, that said that they're keeping a list of foreclosed homes, suggesting that anyone who lost their home in foreclosure should also lose their right to vote. [crowd boos] Ladies and gentleman, if you're worried about losing your home, you should vote for the guys who are prepared to help you keep your home, not those would take it away!"

The Michigan Republican Party has since demanded a retraction from the Michigan Messenger and has threatened a lawsuit, but according to Olbermann, as of Wednesday afternoon no legal papers had been filed. However, the Democrats have filed their own lawsuit, seeking an injunction against the tactic.

Raymond concluded by commenting that the initiative to deploy thousands of lawyers on Election Day might not catch every attempt at trickery of this sort, but "it's such a close election, you'd better be doing everything."

Hence, the importance of remaining all the more vigilant to "early warning" signs in this regard, and contacting law-enforcement agencies in case you come across any such.

===========================

"Don't let 'em fool you, bro; read (and shop) The Exaggerator @ any and every opportunity...." (Now with its very own CafePress-powered e-boutique, The Exaggerator Collection)

John Nichols, a regular contributor to the new and improved "virtual" version of The Capital Times in Madison, Wisconsin had these observations about how "True Republicans" were distancing themselves away from the GOP's status quo (as in associating with the Religiopolitical Right and their weird and unwholesome droogs) in supporting Barak Obama as their Presidential choice:

True Republicans drawn to Obama

Former congressman Leach's endorsement of the Democratic candidate in line with the GOP's original values

John Nichols
August 26, 2008

RIPON -- When former Iowa Congressman Jim Leach -- a Republican stalwart with close ties to the Bush family--endorsed Democrat Barack Obama for president at the Democratic National Convention in Denver, he made a point of noting that he was not switching parties.

"As a Republican, I stand before you with deep respect for the history and traditions of my political party. But it is clear to all Americans that something is out of kilter in our great republic," explained Leach, who argued that Obama's "transformative campaign" represents "a clarion call for renewal rooted in time-tested American values that tap Republican as well as Democratic traditions."

Leach said those Republican traditions include a commitment to individual rights, fairness, equality and "progressive internationalism."

Leach's outline of traditional Republican values is correct.

Democratic loyalists might debate how far back in the party's history one must go in search of those values. But if you go all the way back, to a little white schoolhouse located just off the main street in this quiet eastern Wisconsin college town, you will find roots that look very much like those described by Leach on the day that he endorsed the first African-American candidate ever nominated for the presidency by a major American party.

In many senses, Obama's nomination is the culmination of a political journey begun not in the southern precincts to which the Democratic Party traces its roots, but to a March 20, 1854, meeting where a political provocateur named Alvan Bovay called together his socialist neighbors in order to form a new party that would fight for "free soil, free speech, free men."

In the 1850s, Ripon was a hotbed of radical ideas. A decade earl

ier, in the winter of 1843, a series of lectures at the Franklin Lyceum in Southport (now Kenosha) inspired several dozen men and women to adopt the views of Charles Fourier, a visionary French socialist thinker who sought to restructure society into cooperative agricultural communities called "phalanxes." The newly committed "Fourierites" pooled their meager resources and purchased land on the edge of what is now Ripon. Their Wisconsin phalanx, known as Ceresco, proved to be a success, eventually growing in population to a peak of 180. By the early 1850s, the utopian agricultural community--including buildings that stand to this day--had been incorporated into Ripon.

Bovay initially preached the anti-slavery gospel on the streets of New York, where he had sought to organize working men into a radical political party. He had limited success there and eventually followed the advice of his friend and mentor, newspaper editor Horace Greeley, to "go west, young man."

In Ripon, Bovay found plenty of support for his view that the "old parties" of the day--the conservative Democrats and the slightly more liberal Whigs--had failed to respond to the moral requirement that the United States end the practice of slavery. The campaigner gathered his followers at Ripon's schoolhouse on a cold, late-winter night and formed a new party that they named "Republican" because the word was, to Bovay's view, "suggestive of equality."

The new party sought that equality not just for slaves, but for all workers, declaring in an early platform that its intent was to join "the old battle--not yet over--between the rights of the toiling many and the special privileges of the aristocratic few." That platform promised to promote women's rights, defend immigrants, advance trade union organizing, limit the amount of land that any individual could own and forbid corporate monopolies.

One of the first Wisconsinites attracted to its banner was Carl Schurz, a leader of the radical German revolution of 1848--which also had been influenced by Fourier's ideas. By 1854, Schurz had settled in Watertown and soon became a leader of Wisconsin's burgeoning German community.

Schurz rejected invitations to run for office on the Democrat line because he thought the party was too conservative. But he joined the new party and, within a few years, became one of its first statewide candidates.

Shortly before leaving Wisconsin to join the administration of his close friend and ally, Abraham Lincoln, Schurz addressed students at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. In that speech, he promised that Republicans would establish "a higher order" defined by a commitment to equality, economic common sense and a responsible foreign policy.

Leach, who once chaired the moderate Ripon Society--a group that took its name from the Wisconsin community when it was formed to fight the rise of the Republican right--says that he now hears the themes sounded at the founding of his party in the campaign of Barack Obama. That still did not make switching sides easy, says Leach. "Part of it is political parties are a distant analog to families, and you really hate to step outside a family environment," says the former congressman.

But Leach suggests that in this year of transformational politics, there will be many more "Republicans for Obama." Already, state Rep. Jeff Wood, who served several terms as a Republican in the Wisconsin Assembly, has filed for re-election as an independent and has declared that "there have been many of us frustrated with the party because of the abandonment of the principles we believed the party stood for."

State Rep. Gordon Hintz, an Oshkosh Democrat who represents a district near Ripon, thinks Obama should campaign in the region, perhaps even in Ripon.

"Republicans of today are nothing like the Republicans who founded that party," says Hintz. "Barack Obama should be talking about that fact, and suggesting that he is the candidate that people who appreciate the old Republican values should be supporting."

It might not be all that hard.

In the 2008 Democratic presidential primary, Obama carried Ripon--not merely with more votes than his challenger for the nomination, but with more than any of the Republicans.

In fact, in the birthplace of Republicanism, Obama got more votes in the 2008 Democratic primary than George Bush got in the 2004 general election.

Perhaps Leach should open his "Republicans for Obama" headquarters in Ripon.

Doubtless, Alvan Bovay would approve.

(The discerning reader will kindly note that the story is datelined Ripon, traditionally recognised as the Republican Party's birthplace. The schoolhouse where the GOP was founded is preserved as an historic shrine.)

====================

Just a reminder: Readers (and online shoppers) always wanted @ The Exaggerator; make no mistake about that.

TRANSCRIPT:
JOHN MCCAIN: I stand for the principles and policies that first attracted me to the Republican party when I heard, in whispered conversations and tap codes, about the then governor of California who stood by me and my comrades and who was building quite a reputation for standing by his convictions no matter the changing political winds in thought or popular culture. When I left the Navy and joined public life, I enlisted as a foot soldier in the political revolution he began. And I am as proud today to be a Republican conservative as I was then [applause]. I trust in the courage, good sense, resourcefulness and decency of the American people who deserve a government that trusts in their qualities as well and doesn't abrogate for its self the responsibilities to do for the people what the people can and want to do for themselves. We Republicans have always known that the first responsibility of government is to keep this country safe from enemies foreign and domestic [applause]. And the American people unburdened from the heavy hand of government who spends too much of their money on things they neither want nor need while failing to do as well as we should the things none of us can do individually.

We Republicans have always known that the first responsibility of government is to keep this country safe from enemies foreign and domestic [applause]. And the American people unburdened from the heavy hand of government who spends too much of their money on things they neither want nor need while failing to do as well as we should the things none of us can do individually.

Immigrant Scapegoating - Definately Not an Election Winner

George Bush made a 10% gain in Hispanic voters during his re-election bid in 2004; it is more than likely that the gain would reverse itself into a loss for Republicans come this November.

This time around, pledging to step up immigrant crackdowns throughout the year, the Bush Administration is risking a political fallout with Hispanic voters. The lame-duck President has nothing to lose but it doesn't bode well for the non-teflon Republican Party and John McCain's bid for Presidency.

Regardless of the fact that immigration enforcers claim to be anti-(illegal) immigration and not immigration per se, ICE actions and political rhetoric is nonetheless perceived as just anti-immigrant. And perfectly legal immigrants are being harmed in this so-called anti-(illegal) immigrant climate. Take a look at the Congress economic stimulus package to disallow tax rebates to undocumented workers; it ended up affecting many legal residents who filed joint tax returns with their spouses without social security numbers. In counties like Prince Williams that are now policing immigration, even legal immigrants who perceive hatred and hostility are moving and taking their businesses elsewhere.

The Latino vote is crucial, especially in swing states like Florida, New Mexico, Nevada, and Colorado. Fostering a climate that is heavily perceived as anti-immigrant would undoubtedly turn-off many Hispanic voters, who are the majority of the minority ethnic population and feel targeted due to increased crackdowns and legislation.
