Dr. Rajendra Pachauri, Chair of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), and Mary Nichols, Chair of the California Air Resources Board, dismiss skeptics' claims that humans are not contributing to global warming.

-----

California is a leader in the fight against dangerous climate change. But experts say more needs to be done. Much more.

What is the state of scientific knowledge about the causes and impacts of global warming? How can the U.S. and fast-growing economies such as China and India reduce carbon emissions to safe levels? Can California consumers, corporations and policymakers facilitate systemic change and spur others to act?

What are the costs and what are the opportunities? What role does innovation play? - The Commonwealth Club of California

Rajendra Kumar Pachauri (born August 20, 1940, Nainital, India) is an economist and environmental scientist who has served as the chair of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) since 2002. Pachauri is also the director general of the Energy and Resources Institute in New Delhi, an institution devoted to researching and promoting sustainable development. On December 10, 2007, Dr. Pachauri accepted the Nobel Peace Prize on behalf of the IPCC, along with co-recipient Al Gore.

Mary D. Nichols was appointed by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger as Chairman of the California Air Resources Board in July 2007. She returns to the Air Board 30 years after serving as the Chairman under Governor Jerry Brown from 1978 to 1983

The internet changes every day. Those who keep track of these changes prosper but those who sit back and rest on their laurels will quickly fall behind and lose their competitive edge.

And so it is with Web 2.0 promotions. Even just a year ago marketing successfully in the Web 2.0 world required different methods and knowledge than what you need to be successful today.

That said, there are some internet marketing techniques that are as effective now as they were a few years ago. One of these is content contribution and that is what we are going to focus on in this article. Successful website promotion on today's internet involves content contribution to traditional article submission websites while also using newer Web 2.0 websites. So, here are some tips.

Start off with the more traditional methods. Write, or have written, a few articles and submit them to popular article directories like EzineArticles and ArticleCity. These will allow you to put some details about yourself and a backlink in a resource box at the bottom of your article.

John McCain
Town Hall Meeting
Warren, MI 07/18/08

TRANSCRIPTION
AUDIENCE MEMBER: "As a Catholic male, I'm adamantly pro-life. I'm not sure whether you're aware, but [...] a number of unborn fetuses were found in a dumpster in a local abortion clinic, illegally dumped there. Between Roe v. Wade and the lesser known court case of that day, Doe v. Bolton, [...] the unproven science of embryonic stem cell research, the moral implications of human cloning—come November, I'm hoping to pull the lever for someone who will fight for the rights of the unborn. And can I count on you to fight for the rights of the unborn?"

JOHN MCCAIN: "Yes you can. I believe the noblest words ever written are that all of us are created equal and endowed by certain inalienable rights, among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. And I think that that applies to the unborn as well as the born. I have a long and consistent record of support for the unborn and the right to life. And I'm proud of that record. And I would point out that Senator Obama, when he was a member of the Illinois state legislature and their judiciary committee, there was a vote on a ban for partial birth abortion, one of the most gruesome procedures ever, [...] and he voted against a ban on partial-birth abortion. So there's a clear choice between myself and Senator Obama. I have a long record of advocacy for and voting for the rights of the unborn and I'm proud of that."

For the last 10 years psychologist Gosling has been studying how people project (and protect) their inner selves. By exploring our private worlds (desks, bedrooms, even our clothes and cars), he shows not only how we showcase our personalities in unexpected ways, but also how we create personality in the first place, communicate it others and interpret the world around us - The Commonwealth Club of California

His work has been widely covered in the media, including The New York Times, Psychology Today, NPR, and "Good Morning America," and his research is featured in Malcolm Gladwell's Blink.
Mitah Shah and Mark Leibowitz visit Google's headquarters in Mountain View, CA, to discuss the project "Well Souled". This event took place July 29, 2008, as part of the Authors@Google series. For more info on Well Souled, visit www.wellsouled.com

At the heart of Well Souled is the belief that lasting impressions are those that come naturally through the people you meet on your travels and how they connect you to the context, sharing their perspectives on the attitudes, sounds, colors, and textures that surround you. This is how travel becomes emotional -- soulful. Well Souled translates this kind of cultural immersion into lifestyle products that celebrate the sensory experience of travel.

In each country, Well Souled has identified a primary social initiative and will join forces with an established non-profit partner to implement its vision with integrity and transparency. First stop: South Africa. Here, township style pulses to kwaito beats and "the mountain" is covered by a tablecloth of clouds. Here, you find people living on laughter, luxury alongside aspiration, and children, orphaned by AIDS, embracing the future. In South Africa, Well Souled will partner with leaders in HIV/AIDS research, prevention, and treatment to help these children do so.

John McCain
Livestrong Summit
Columbus, OH - 07/24/08

TRANSCRIPT:
LANCE ARMSTRONG: This election [...] there's constant coverage. Which I think is great, for the most part. Through this process, I have seen, this is just speaking from fact, I have seen your opponent say that the equivalent, or voting for you is the equivalent of voting for a third George Bush administration. This is what I have read. The second thing I'll say, again a fact, that for the third year in a row the current administration has shrunk the budget at the National Cancer Institute. This is a fact. If you are elected president, will we continue to see that trend? Or will we reverse that trend, and actually increase funding at the National Cancer Institute?

MCCAIN: We will reverse that trend. But [...] I think we ought to all support a better method of aportionating the funds. [...] So we can make sure, that whatever money it is, is going in the most effective way and would lead us to on the path of success in the struggle against various forms of cancer or other diseases. There's unfortunately a competition, as you know, between the important advocates, and the addressing adequately so many of the challenges that America faces in the area of health and other areas. [...] And don't sometimes you feel Lance, like you are competing with people who also have very legitimate causes?

ARMSTRONG: Correct. And that's what they say. [...] And I think that's the beauty of this event. And it's been our approach all along is that we think we need a united approach here. This is one disease, absolutely. And I have no idea who's going to be the president [...] but I want to make sure I heard you right, you would decrease that trend, I mean I'm sorry, you would reverse that trend?

MCCAIN: Oh sure, yes.

PAULA ZAHN: Can you tell us by how much though? Your democratic candidates at your forum in the fall were saying they'd double and they'd triple the [...] budget. Double, triple, those are big numbers.

MCCAIN: How about quadruple, or quintuple? How would that sound? Quintuple or sextuple or whatever it is you want to say? The point is, one, we got to pay for it. And two, we have to apportionate it correctly. So it's easy, particularly in all candor, for liberals to go out and say I'll give you all this. You know the debt we've laid on you, future generations of Americans? Do you know that Medicare, which is a vital safety net, is 40 some trillion dollars in debt? Unfunded liability. So when you go out and you say I'm going to double, or triple, or quadruple the amount of money, I'd like to not lay the debt for it on the next generation of Americans who are not going to receive the same social security benefits, who are not going to receive Medicare.

And so I think we need some fiscal responsibility in Congress also. And the first thing I want to do is cut out the pork barrel projects. Okay, you keep mentioning my opponent or my opponents. I have never asked for a single pork barrel project for my state. Not a one. Never. My opponent has asked for 932 million dollars in pork barrel projects. Literally one million dollars for every working day that he's been in the United States Senate. So if you want to talk about spending money, I know how to spend money, everybody does, but I promise you my friends, I'm not going to lay that debt on the next generation of Americans. We're going to pay for it.

ZAHN: So you're not going to give us any hard numbers then, as president how much you would?

MCCAIN: I'd be glad to give you some hard numbers about the 9,000 pork barrel projects and 18 billion dollars in pork barrel projects that we've accounted for that we could take and immediately transfer, that Senator Obama continues to vote for, and I continue to vote against. So I'd be glad to give you some numbers but I'd also like to give you a couple of other numbers. How bout, 6 trillion, in I believe it is, unfunded debt is social security. These young people here, they're going to have to pay that bill. Let me give you another number. 40 some trillion dollars in unfunded liability from Medicare. [...] I don't think it's particularly fair to say I'll spend all this much more money without paying for it and without having it taken care of in one way or the other. So we will increase the funding my friends, but we will do it because I'll make the pork barreling guys famous, and you'll know their names. And we won't spend anymore. [...] My friends, we won't do those things. And we'll take that money, and we'll make sure it goes to the right place and this is one of the right places.

John McCain
Livestrong Summit
Columbus, OH - 07/24/08

TRANSCRIPT:
LANCE ARMSTRONG: When and if you are elected president and you elect your cabinet, I think it's important, I understand that this is our family, the United States of America is our family. This is how much we make, this is how much we get to spend, we can spend it on wars overseas, we can spend it on diseases, we can spend it on highways. However, and I understand we have to work within the parameters of that budget, however, to me it's easy to understand the significance of this disease when you just look at the toll it takes on American lives. You can look at the emotional and the human toll, 560,000 Americans die every year, and this just keeps clicking and clicking and clicking, it costs our economy 213 billion dollars, and we're spending 5. This makes no economic sense. Meanwhile, 560,000 Americans will not go home next year. That makes no sense morally. [...] You can look at how we allocate money per death, in the United States of America and cancer is underfunded. And then you can look under the umbrella of cancer and say where are we spending our money with regards to the fight against cancer? And you realize that lung cancer is underfunded. And it's underfunded because it's an orphan disease, people say you smoked, it was your choice. But I think we must look at the entire problem, allocate where it effects us the most. [...] I think we have to prioritize what this disease and what certain sets of diseases, how they impact our society.

MCCAIN: I think I'm in total agreement with you. And one of my opening comments, when I talked about I would support increases, we have to make the right kind of decisions and prioritizing. But I'd also like to point out to you that what we also need to do is scrutinize every agency of government and those that are not doing the things they were supposed to do, we should abolish those. One of the things about beurocracies is that once they're established they seem to go on and on. And I can identify so much, do you know in the farm bill my friends we gave 93 million dollars in tax breaks to thorough bred race horse owners. [...] And 15 million dollars for asparagus growers. And the list goes on and on. We need to scrutinize these agencies of government and rather just promise increased spending we should take those funds and then we can put them to the causes that are so vital. In every statistic that you mentioned, Lance, is absolutely true. And frankly, as a person who had one of the toughest fights of quitting smoking, I don't think we should penalize people with lung cancer because they smoked. Especially when the government of the United States encouraged it at one point in time in our history.

John McCain
Livestrong Summit
Columbus, OH - 07/24/08

TRANSCRIPT:
MCCAIN: "Yes, I was in a battle, not a war like so many people, brave Americans that Lance just pointed out. But I was in a battle with melanoma. And I know, I know somewhat, at least to a small degree how tough that battle can be. And yes, I have become a fanatic. Yes, I admit it. [...] We go a lot of sun in Arizona, and we know of the rising instance, just of melanoma in my state. And we know, of the tragedy and havoc. Many times, I recall a beloved woman by the name of Maureen Reagan. [...]

We know the struggle and the challenge that that faces. And I am, as Lance is, optimistic about the future. I'm optimistic about the future because one of the greatest accomplishments in human history took place some years ago with the mapping of the human genome. And we know that this has opened the door and the vistas in a way that we never thought possible. And I'm very proud, if I might give you a little commercial, that Dr. Jeff Tremp, one of those who was at the National Institute of Health at that time it was founded, a wonderful company called TGEN in Phoenix Arizona. And they are cooperating with the University of Arizona, Arizona State Univ., with the pharmaceutical companies, and they're making great progress. And there are institutions here in Ohio and all across America that are making use of that incredible, incredible, incredible accomplishment that frankly most experts thought was not possible. Thanks in part to the work of organizations like Livestrong, [...] and in the lives of cancer patients you are adding decades where once there were years, and years where once there were only months. Scientists, as we all know, are closing in on the enemy. Not fast enough, not fast enough, in all its forms. And one day they're going to save uncounted lives with a cure for cancer."

"Insomniac" author Gayle Greene offers advice for people who suffer from chronic sleep deprivation.

-----

Gayle Greene discusses her book Insomniac.

Part memoir, part scientific reportage and analysis, a book for all of us who wish to know more about sleep, the condition which consumes one third of our lives. Greene - a member of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and the patient representative on the board of the American Insomnia Association - addresses head on the neglect of this disorder that affects millions.

Herself an insomniac, she weaves together the story of her personal journey through a lifetime of sleepless nights; the experiences of other insomniacs; an in-depth study of sleep science and current research; and a detailed examination of what can be done to help those afflicted. You might call her work, as she notes, "a field guide to insomnia".

Billy Collins writes, "The good news is that Greene's book is all you ever need to read on the subject." Green is a professor of literature and women's studies at Scripps College - Cody's Books

Gayle Green has published dozens of articles in scholarly journals such as Signs, Contemporary Literature, and Renaissance Drama, many of which have been reprinted in anthologies (e.g., Blackwell¹s Shakespeare: An Anthology of Criticism and Theory, 1945-2000,2004). She's also published in more popular venues such as Ms Magazine, The Nation, The Women's Review of Books, and In These Times.

She's a member of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, a professional medical society for researchers and clinicians, and a board member and the patient representative of the American Insomnia Association, an organization within the American Academic of Sleep Medicine.

QUESTIONER: " . . . What's going to happen to the funding for research programs in universities across the nation . . . ?

JOHN MCCAIN: "I think obviously we have to encourage it and we have to fund it. But it brings up a larger issue . . . I think we need to fund it . . . We have to knit it all that together. But one of the problems I see in Washington today is there's a competition . . . for funds which sometimes is dependent upon the political influence of the groups or individuals or cause or technology that they want funded as opposed to frankly an objective view. And there's never enough money . . . so rather than have it decided, with all due respect, by my colleagues in Congress I'd like to see a group of Americans appointed by the president who are the best in their business . . . objective scientific opinion and knowledge so that they can say, ok, here's our first priority . . . here's our second, here's our third, here's our fourth . . . I think that all of us could be better served in the funding . . . by getting the smartest people in America together and have them make the recommendations. Maybe congress wouldn't always follow those recommendations but at least we'd have a basis . . . "

Former U.S. Surgeon General Richard Carmona addresses the Bush Administration's position on federal funding for stem cell research, and criticizes the conflicts between medical science and politics.

-----

Prevention: The Key to Heading off a National Health-Care Crisis with former Surgeon General Richard Carmona, M.D.

Carmona describes the current health crisis as preventable and reversible. He notes that chronic disease accounts for 7 in 10 deaths and 75 cents of every dollar spent on health care in the United States.

As 17th U.S. surgeon general, Carmona worked to revise our nation's approach to health by emphasizing the importance of increasing prevention, eliminating health disparities and improving health literacy.

Carmona's rise to being "doctor of the nation" is particularly remarkable because of his disadvantaged childhood. He was homeless at age 6 and a high-school dropout at 17. Join us to hear Carmona's insights about our health-care challenges and opportunities - The Commonwealth Club of California

Dr. Richard H. Carmona was born to a poor family in New York City. Dr. Carmona experienced homelessness, hunger and health disparities during his youth. The experiences greatly sensitized him to the relationships among culture, health, education and economic status and shaped his future.

After dropping out of high school, Dr. Carmona enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1967. While serving, he earned his General Equivalency Diploma and went on to become a combat-decorated Special Forces Vietnam veteran. After leaving active duty, he was able to attend Bronx Community College of the City University of New York through an open enrollment program for veterans. He earned an associate of arts degree and then attended the University of California, San Francisco, where he received a bachelor of science degree (1977) and medical degree (1979). At the University of California Medical School, Dr. Carmona was awarded the prestigious gold-headed cane as the top graduate.

Originally trained in general and vascular surgery after medical school, Dr. Carmona completed a
National Institutes of Health-sponsored fellowship in trauma, burns and critical care. He is a Fellow
of the American College of Surgeons. Recruited jointly by the Tucson (Arizona) Medical Center and
the University of Arizona, Dr. Carmona started and directed Arizona's first regional trauma care
system, and became the chairman of the State of Arizona Southern Regional Emergency Medical
System, a professor of surgery, public health and family and community medicine at the University
of Arizona, and the Pima County Sheriff's Department surgeon and deputy sheriff.
