The head of the Homeland Security agency that ushers in new citizens is leaving the job. Emilio Gonzalez is the director of Citizenship and Immigration Services. [...]
Gonzalez's resignation will be effective April 18. He is leaving just a few months after his agency drastically increased the fees it charges immigrants to apply for citizenship and other immigration benefits.
That increase triggered record-setting applications last year that deluged the agency. Many immigrants won't become citizens in time to vote in November's elections. [...] Gonzalez said his departure is unrelated to criticism of the fee increase and the delays in processing citizenship fees in an election year.

Of course not. He's probably exhausted, dehydrated, going through rehab, and needs to spend more time with his family.

Mrs. Gonzo: Enough. The hearings are over. Listen, Al, you gotta quit your job. You're lucky you lasted as long as you did.

Here is what Mike had to say back in October about Craig. His statement today is below. I think he hit exactly the right note:

Today, Larry Craig apologized to everyone except the people he has most harmed by his actions -- gay Americans. His legacy will include his career-long work in opposing basic civil rights for gay and lesbian Americans, creating an atmosphere where it is unsafe for many to be honest about their lives.

Those in American politics who use anti-gay sentiments for political purposes must learn from this experience and reconsider their divisive tactics. Politicians like Larry Craig have helped to create a society that drives many men and women into the closet. Larry Craig's arrest, when coupled with the hypocrisy of seeking sexual encounters from the very men he actively legislates against, becomes merely the catalyst to expose the dishonesty and secrecy of anti-gay politicians who expect a community to harbor its own enemies within.

The time when politicians can stand with one foot on the platform of homophobia and the other in the closet has come to an end.

Let me add that the time when the Thompsons, Vitters, DeLays, Giulianis, McCains, Gingrichs, Livingtstons, McConnells, Reagans and Doles could stand with one foot on a platform of restricting the rights of heterosexuals (reproductive rights, what movies and television we view, etc.) and place the other foot in hookers' pads, dens of adultery, the plush offices of divorce lawyers or through the back door of abortion clinics is also over.

Whether you are heterosexual or homosexual, I frankly don't care. Leave me alone and I will happily leave you alone. Try and legislate my personal life and Republican Sexcapades is coming to a neighborhood near you...

What a joyous day! I'm watching Alberto Gonzales resign right now to "be with his family." He and Rove will have lots of quality time together!

Congratulations on your work, your efforts, your signatures. When we all started the campaign to impeach Gonzales it seemed a far and distant possibility. But we learn, once again, that taking the lead, taking the initiative, and using our tools with the new media can have an impact. Nothing like seeing a clip of his lies spread around to hundreds of thousands!
