More than 15,000 media people are expected to invade St. Paul, Minnesota starting at the end of July to cover the Republican National Convention, which is in September. Today media representatives got to look at how the convention will be set up. The UpTake's Mike McIntee went along to watch the media.

It's interesting that as local media organizations try to trim expenses, the number of press attending the RNC is increasing. Four years ago there were 5,000 radio people covering the RNC. This year there will be more than 7,000 radio people broadcasting from the Xcel. One RNC spokesperson I talked to said that an increased interest by the foreign press in US politics may be the reason behind the increase.

If you're blogger and planning to rely on wireless to cover the RNC, better come up with another plan. With so many people using cell phones and wireless, it is very likely any network you use may not work reliably. One radio engineer I spoke with today was disappointed that the RNC had not yet assigned spaces on "Radio Row", making planning for radio stations a bit more difficult.

By the numbers: The media will occupy 450,000 square feet during the convention. The convention is using more than 100 hotels in the Twin Cites. Total attendance at the convention (delegates, alternates, volunteers, media and other guests) is expected to be about 45,000.

Bush's mystery dinner host: The Vulture Capitalist

[W]e now know that the host of Friday's $1.4 million Republican National Committee fundraiser at the famed Beresford co-op in New York -- headlined by President Bush -- was none other than Paul Singer, the hedge fund billionaire and renowned "vulture capitalist."
Singer, a mega-donor for Republicans and conservative causes over the years, has pumped out more than $2.6 million in contributions over the past decade, according to a records search, to folks such as John McCain, Tom DeLay, Mitch McConnell, Christine Todd Whitman and dozens of others. He was a big promoter of Rudy Giuliani's late presidential campaign and gave $5,000 to Swift Boat Veterans for Truth back in 2004.

While Obama is having to make (courageously groundbreaking) speeches on the state of race relations in the United States in order to deal with the controversy over his pastor, Bush is raking in major cash with the aid of Sleazy McSingerton.

No need to defend this guy, right George? He's white and Republican.

So why should the White House or Republican National Committee not want to advertise that Singer was the host of such a fabulous luncheon -- 70 folks at $20,000 a pop?
Maybe it's his media nickname, "vulture capitalist," coined because his firm buys up debt held by Third World countries at a discount, then sues them to force repayment in full, sometimes for even more than the original amount.

Singer has said that buying "sovereign distressed debt" in such places as Peru or Congo serves the purpose of requiring countries to comply with contracts and that the countries can afford to pay but refuse to do so. Besides, it's less than 2 percent of his 31-year-old, $9.8 billion hedge fund.

These are the fine upstanding types who call themselves patriotic while pointing fingers at Obama for guilt by association. Funny, I didn't see Obama hiding anything in response to all the mudslinging. In fact, he faced the country he loves head on, honestly and with dignity.

Bush, on the other hand, is so cowardly that he wouldn't reveal that Singer was the host of his huge RNC fundraiser. I guess it's hunky dory as long as the vulture capitalist pulls in enough money. Nothing unAmerican about that, huh?

Republican breaks House rules in campaign e-mail.

Quel surprise. A Republican did something unethical, possibly illegal:

A staffer working for Rep. Steve Chabot (R-Ohio) apparently broke House rules Friday, forwarding a request that congressional staffers send interns to the Republican National Committee (RNC) to make campaign-related phone calls.

I'm sure it was just an innocent mistake, nothing too specific, just some vague, misunderstood, offhand comment.

The episode started when an aide at the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) sent an e-mail Friday to congressional staffers. The e-mail asked the GOP aides to send interns to the RNC to make phone calls for Jim Oberweis (R), who is running for former House Speaker Dennis Hastert’s (R-Ill.) vacated congressional seat in a special election Saturday.
“If you have interns sitting around today, please send them over to the RNC...to phone bank for Oberweis,” the e-mail states.

It's not like he used House resources for campaign purposes or anything. Let's not be too hard on the lad.

Matthew Lillibridge, a staff assistant in Chabot’s office, forwarded the e-mail to aides in other congressional offices, apparently violating House rules against using House resources for campaign purposes. Lillibridge used his House e-mail address, forwarding the e-mail to other addresses on the House e-mail server.

Busted.

“It raises questions as to what other activities are taking place in Congressman Steve Chabot’s office on the taxpayer’s dime,” Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) spokesman Doug Thornell told The Hill. Democrats are targeting Chabot's seat this cycle.

Hey, it's okay though... he apologized. Wait. What's that smell?

Rep. Gene Green (D-Texas), a member of the House ethics committee, told The Hill the NRCC staffer’s request for interns “didn’t smell right.”
“I’m not sure if it’s illegal, but it sure sounds like it is,” Green said, noting that he never felt comfortable asking his congressional employees to do campaign work.

That's because you have a sense of ethics, Gene. Sadly, that's a rarity these days.

For Republicans, watching Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama fight for supremacy in fundraising is not just a spectator sport. It is a look into the future, and the GOP isn't cheering.

Obama and Clinton together raked in as much as seven times as much cash in February as John McCain, the all-but-certain Republican nominee.
The Democrats, particularly Obama, are also developing a broad base of fervent donors whose help goes beyond sending money.
Some Republicans are sounding alarms.

Alarms!!? As innnn... Red alerts? As in scary? As in fear? MeOhMy, this is serious. How does your big, awkward, collective right foot feel having the other shoe on it?

"Since the midterm election of 2006, Democrats have had an enthusiasm gap with Republicans," said GOP strategist Scott Reed. "They have big crowds, raise more money and appear to have more excitement on the campaign trail. Couple this with turnout numbers, which are off the charts, and Republicans are going to have a big challenge in the fall."

We can only hope so.

The Democratic financial advantage has been evident for more than a year. The eight Democrats who were in the presidential race last year raised a combined $253 million in 2007 from individual donors; the nine Republicans raised a combined $207.5 million. Obama's $36 million in January exceeded the amount raised by all six Republican candidates who were still competing in that month.

The discrepancy was enough to lead Republican National Committee Treasurer Tim Morgan to sound off last weekend in San Francisco during a California Republican convention. Morgan said the RNC has budgeted $150 million for the year, $100 million less than it raised in 2004 when President Bush ran against Democrat John Kerry.
"I look at the Barack Obama campaign in some horror," he said, noting the Democrat's totals so far this year. "That should give all of us a pause."

Should Democrats denounce the use of the name "John Sidney McCain"?

The RNC is denouncing (what, not "rejecting"?!) the use of Barack Obama's middle name. We should return the favor and never utter "Sidney" (Gramps' middle name) again. It's only fair.

So, remember, Obama's middle name is off limits because you wouldn't want to draw attention to it, not one more time, not even as a slip of the tongue. Whatever you do, don't use his middle name! That's taboo. Verboten. Never to be uttered again. Ever.

Even thinking about using his middle name is wrong. Nobody should do that either. There should be no association whatsoever with Barack Obama and his middle name. The RNC wants you to know that.

Because, as everyone knows, discussing the Big Fat Republican Elephant In The Room will make everyone forget it, as if it never existed. It will now disappear from all discussion of Barack WhatHisName Obama. It will heretofore never occur to anyone to link Obama to that name.

Gone.

But not forgotten.

How the Media Enable BushCo: Lost E-mail Edition

Hey boys and girls! Ever wish you could find a way to ignore federal thugs as they eliminate any trace of evidence of a crime? Me too! Just follow along as Froomkin sums it all up:

The Bush White House has made a mockery of the Presidential Records Act and its requirement that official White House records -- including e-mails -- be preserved for posterity.
At a congressional hearing yesterday, it became clear for the first time that top White House officials knowingly adopted a new e-mail system in 2002 that was riddled with technical problems that not only risked data loss but could easily be exploited by those who wished to keep their e-mails from public scrutiny. We've known for a while that a lot of White House e-mails, by some accounts numbering in the millions, are missing and have possibly been erased. Yesterday's discovery raises the question of whether that happened by accident -- or by design. And the White House's unhurried approach to addressing the problem is hardly reassuring.
Similarly, we already knew that Karl Rove and many of his colleagues routinely used Republican National Committee e-mail accounts for official business over a period of years, thereby avoiding any archiving process whatsoever. But House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Henry Waxman made the startling announcement yesterday that the RNC has not tried -- and has no intention of trying -- to restore any of those e-mails.
In addition to the many detailed questions prompted by yesterday's hearing, there is one overarching issue: Can White House officials coast all the way to Jan. 20 without being exposed in such a way that the press and the public take full notice of what they've done?

Give up already? Didn't any of you study for this? Alrighty then, here's the answer:

At least when it comes to the e-mail scandal, there are signs they can. The coverage today was muted at best.

RNC Secretly Polls on Racism, Sexism

The Republican National Committee "has commissioned polling and focus groups to determine the boundaries of attacking a minority or female candidate," according to The Politico. "The secretive effort underscores the enormous risk senior GOP operatives see for a party often criticized for its insensitivity to minorities in campaigns dating back to the 1960s."

"The RNC project is viewed as so sensitive that those involved in the work were reluctant to discuss the findings in detail. But one Republican strategist, who asked that his name be withheld to speak candidly, said the research shows the daunting and delicate task ahead."

Heh, guess that means they can't be as destructive and evil as they'd like to be. Unfortunate. More from the Politico-

In other words, Republicans should expect a severe backlash if they say or do anything that smacks of politicizing race or gender. They didn't need an expensive poll to learn that lesson, however.

GOP officials are certain their words will be scrutinized ever more aggressively. They anticipate a regular media barrage of accusations of intolerance - or much worse.

They seem most concerned about Obama right now.

"You can't run against Barack Obama the way you could run against Bill Clinton, Al Gore or John Kerry," said Jack Kemp, the 1996 GOP vice presidential nominee, who expressed concern that the party could be reduced to an "all white country club party" if it does not tread cautiously.

Dean Speaks Out on McCain

It's like 1989 all over again -- John McCain has been caught in yet another ethics scandal.

If you had a TV on yesterday, you saw who jumped to his defense -- the team of lobbyists who work for him, led by campaign manager and lobbyist Rick Davis, and the well-oiled right-wing noise machine, led by Rush Limbaugh. In an ironic message to McCain supporters yesterday, lobbyist Davis wrote...

[John McCain] has led the charge to limit the money and influence of the special interests in politics and stomp out corruption.

They spent the day breathlessly assailing the New York Times as "liberal," ignoring the ethics lapses the team of reporters had uncovered. The fact is, John McCain is facing legitimate questions about lobbyists, favors, and campaign contributions, just as he did during the Keating Five scandal that nearly derailed his political career twenty years ago.

Seeing more dollar signs, the McCain campaign and the RNC decided to jump at the chance to take advantage of the distraction they had created to raise money. They had spent the day firing their supporters up, trying desperately to change the subject, and then they literally cashed in on it. It was textbook sleaze.

So, let's hit back.

Don't let John McCain's team of lobbyists, Rush Limbaugh and the right-wing noise machine, the RNC and their special-interest backers take advantage of John McCain's most recent ethics scandal -- it's disgusting, and we can't let them get ahead like this.
