Enough voters answered &quot;no&quot; to give Reagan a decisive victory in the election. <p>Senator Obama is posing the same question today, since Senator McCain promises to continue the economic policies of the Bush administration. One of us (John Schmitt) recently compared <a href="http://www.cepr.net/index.php/publications/reports/2000-2008:-are-you-better-off/">all the major indicators</a> of economic well-being in 2008 and 2000.</p> <p>On 23 of the 25 measures selected, the economy was doing better in 2000 than 2008. The deterioration was sharpest in the measures that concern us most. For example, the unemployment was just 4.0 percent in 2000. The most recent data show the unemployment rate at 6.1 percent. While family income was higher in 2008 than 2000, the gain over these 8 years was a pathetic 0.4 percent, compared to 14.7 percent growth in the Clinton years. I think they're inspired by the Europe of old, big government, big brother, big taxes. In my view that is the wrong way to go. The right way for America to proceed when we face the kinda of challenges we face is to pursue the strategy which Ronald Reagan pursued when we faced the challenges of the last century. He said the right path forward is to strengthen America. He strengthened our confidence in ourselves. He rebuilt the optimism that America had lost under Jimmy Carter. He strengthened our families and values. He also made sure that we could compete with anybody in the world. He brought our taxes down, a lot. That caused our economy to take off. And in turn allowed us to out-compete the Russians. And then of course, he strengthened our military. Facing the kind of military challenge that we faced then, he made sure that our military was second to none. And finally, the, the Soviets had to say 'enough already' and they threw in the towel. Now we face extraordinary challenges and the right course is to strengthen America again. After watching this video, many will change their minds. </p><p>As the crack epidemic flooded inner cities across the country, in 1986 Reagan&#39;s &quot;Anti-Drug Abuse Act&quot; makes the penalty for crack possession a hundred times harsher than that of powder cocaine. The following year new legislation is passed allowing private corporations to own and operate prisons. Twenty years later over a million non-violent drug offenders are imprisoned while corporate stocks are traded based on how many prisoners are in the cages. </p><p>A report released in 2008 by the International Center for Prison Studies at King&#39;s College London states that the United States has the highest incarceration rate and most people behind bars per capita in the world. Over 50% of these people are imprisoned for drug crimes. At the same time, prescription drug companies account for over 50% of Fortune 500 profits. All illegal drugs combined kill approx 11K per year while cigarettes, alcohol and pharmaceutical kill almost a million.
