(July 3, 2008) Robert Mugabe wins re-election as president of Zimbabwe in a campaign of violence and intimidation. Activists fight back, with new media as their weapon. Can the people of Zimbabwe take back the democracy Mugabe stole?

Zimbabwe is just hours away from an election, where the winner is already known, and it's an election that's been branded a sham. There is only one candidate - President Robert Mugabe will have his 28-year reign extended and he says he is sticking to the vote, because that is the law of his country. Addressing his supporters he said he was open to discussion, but no-one from outside Zimbabwe should dare interfere. Al Jazeera's Haru Mutasa is in the Zimbabwean capital Harare. She has been out speaking to the people ahead of Friday's vote.

Instant runoff voting (IRV) allows voters to mark the election ballot with their sequential preference for candidates. It's as easy as 1-2-3. If your chosen candidate is not viable in the first round of counting, then your vote gets tallied for your second choice, and so on. Ultimately, the candidate who wins does so with a majority of the vote.

IRV is currently used in certain state and local elections, and some other countries have also adopted this form of voting. Simply put, IRV gives more power to one's vote. It makes sure that every vote truly does matter (no more arguments about throwing away one's vote on non-viable or third-party candidates). It allows voters to demonstrate through their support of different candidates what issues are important to them, such that elected officials can acknowledge these concerns once in office.

You can learn more about IRV through these sites:

The Road to Better Elections

Fair Vote
