<p>We speak with Sami Rasouli, an Iraqi American who grew up in Najaf. He left in the late 1970s and eventually moved to the United States and settled down in Minneapolis. In November 2004, nearly thirty years after leaving Iraq, Sami returned home to help rebuild his country as director of the Muslim Peacemakers Team in Najaf. <p>Sami Al-Arian Released After 5.5 Years in Prison</p>
<p>After more than five-and-a-half years behind bars, Palestinian professor and activist, Sami Al-Arian, has been released from prison. Immigration authorities released him on bail on Tuesday after they failed to explain his continued detention pending a trial for refusing to testify before a grand jury about a cluster of Muslim organizations in northern Virginia. But while he is out of prison, Sami Al-Arian is not free. He must remain under house detention at his daughter Laila's residence in Virginia, pending trial. Laila Al-Arian joins us from Virginia. <p>During Israel's year-long blockade of Gaza, Palestinians have struggled to find tangible improvements in their lives.</p>
<p>A recent increase in the flow of goods into the territory following a "truce" between Israel and Hamas has softened the situation, but shelves in many local stores remain bare.</p>
<p>One necessity hard to come by is drinking water, which, as Al Jazeera's Sami Zeidan discovered, was more difficult to buy than some other rather odd products.</p>

<p>Sami Al Hajj, a cameraman for Al Jazeera, had not tasted freedom since 2001. </p>
<p>But now he is in his homeland Sudan after spending six years at the U.S. military prison in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, where he was held without charge or trial.</p>
<p>The frail and sick looking man was delivered to Sudanese authorities in Khartoum. There he had an emotional reunion with his family as he arrived at hospital.
<br />
<br />Amr Al-Kahky, who worked with al Hajj before his imprisonement, went to meet him and sent this report from Khartoum.</p>

<p>It has emerged that the Bush administration caught off-guard by the rise of Hamas, embarked on a secret plan to overthrow its democratically-elected government.</p>
<p>The magazine Vanity Fair reports in its April edition that President Bush and Condoleeza Rice, the US secretary of state, signed off on a plan for Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian president, to quash the Hamas authorities.</p>
<p>The plan involved Washington's allies in the region channeling arms and cash to Fatah fighters, who would rise up against Hamas.</p>
<p>But the plan backfired spectacularly, with Hamas apparently anticipating the move and taking over in Gaza.</p>
<p>How and why did Washington fail in its aims? What were its true motives, and where will its policy on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict head now?</p>

<p>The results are in, and Vladimir Putin's hand-picked successor, Dmitry Medvedev, has won the Russian presidential elections in a landslide.</p>
<p>Medvedev has promised to carry on Putin's legacy. He says he wants Putin to be his prime minister, but just how much power the president will retain once he leaves office is unclear.</p>
<p>Other candidates in the race are protesting the results, claiming they were not allowed equal media coverage before the vote.</p>
<p>Election monitors are also saying the vote was not fair.</p>
<p>Has the election and results been a blow to Russian democracy? And how will Medvedev tackle the big issues facing the country?
