<p><p>On November 1, 2008, I attended The Call -- a rally organized by Lou Engle at San Diego's Qualcomm Stadium -- attended by 33,000 (according to organizer estimates) over a twelve hour period. Citing the state's "fog of Jezebel confusion," Engle organized this incarnation of The Call to support Proposition 8, a California ballot proposition that would ban same-sex marriage in the state.</p><p>During the event, Engle warned that the decadence in the state "will release a spirit that is more demonic than Islam." The Call is a large-scale traveling revival meeting that purports to offer participants an edifying day of fasting and prayer away from the temptations of secular culture. My documentation of the event can be seen in this video. </p><p>The "call" of the title was to spiritual warfare -- to "break the 40-year Berkeley rebellion" (a reference to what they see as the rampant spread of secular values following the Berkeley protests of the 1960s) and to cleanse the city of San Francisco. Engle's apocalyptic battle cry, "As California goes, so goes the nation" was the underlying theme of the event -- if the "sanctity of marriage" falls in the trendsetting state of California, the nation won't be far behind. The crowd was reminded by Engle, James Dobson, Tony Perkins and others of a Christian right maxim: the traditional family structure forms the foundation of a Godly society and to undermine it is to join forces with the Antichrist. </p><p>Max Blumenthal has more on <a href="http://www.thedailybeast.com/blogs-and-stories/2008-11-03/the-man-behind-proposition-8">the man behind Prop 8</a>.</p></p>

<p>The Listening Post's Robin Armstrong reports on the ailing US newspaper industry. </p>
<p>This is a chronic affliction - both advertising revenue and readership are shrinking, and newspapers across the country are performing something of a disappearing act. Moreover, US newspapers have seen their share value drop more than any other sector in the media industry, papers are haemorrhaging staff. They are faced with a choice: either migrate to the internet, or die. </p>
<p>The Listening Post goes to California, home of one of America's oldest and best-known titles, the San Francisco Chronicle, to see if the US newspaper industry is about to publish its own obituary. </p>
<p>In Newsbytes, we look at a cartoon saga in South Africa; an inflammatory DVD about Islamic extremism; media coverage of the forthcoming Belarusian parliamentary elections; a tightening of the grip on the media in China and Russian PM, Vladimir Putin, who is said to be fuming that an exclusive interview with CNN was heavily edited.</p>
<p>Closing our show with this week's Video of the Week is a quirky viral showing North Korea's Dear Leader Kim Jong Il as an animated video game character. Created by a German entertainment show, the video puts Jong Il through a Super Mario-like sequence, complete with hostile enemy countries and nuclear bombs. </p>

<p><p>From Kip Williams: </p><p> Earlier this year I began taking my video camera out to the Castro, San Francisco's gay neighborhood, to talk to people about social change. I wanted to explore how we LGBT folk see ourselves in relation to a broader movement for social, racial, and economic justice. The project has evolved into a video blog called <em>Castro in the Streets.</em></p><p>In March, Director Gus Van Sant put out an open call for extras to recreate Gay Freedom Day from June of 1978 for his upcoming film about Harvey Milk. I went to talk to people about what Harvey Milk represents to our community, and how the Castro has changed since the 70s. </p></p>

The above is an effort that was started by <a href="http://onedream2009.org">OneDream2009</a>, a group of 20 undocumented students in the San Francisco Bay Area. </p><p>Yet, instead of working separately, we should branch out and seek to connect with more student groups. The good news is that the online student advocacy efforts for the DREAM Act are well-linked and growing with this <a href="http://adreamdeferred.org">site</a>, numerous student blogs, <a href="http://dreamact.info">DreamAct.info</a> and the newly constructed <a href="http://dreamactivist.org">DreamActivist.org</a>, an effort by DREAMers across the United States working together online. </p></p>

<p>A peaceful start to San Francisco's Olympic torch relay... but all along the relay route, massive security and a change in course aimed at avoiding chaos. But pro-Tibet protesters weren't the only ones there to make their voices heard. They clashed with pro-China demonstrators there to voice their support for the country hosting the Beijing's Olympic games.</p>
