RAMALLAH, West Bank, March 23 (UPI) -- Security lined the West Bank streets of Ramallah where U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney was meeting Sunday with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

Cheney's visit to the West Bank is part of his tour of the Mideast, which he began Saturday with strong support for Israel on security matters.

"America's commitment to Israel's security is enduring and unshakable, as is our commitment to Israel's right to defend itself - always -against terrorism, rocket attacks and other threats from forces dedicated to Israel's destruction," Cheney said during a late Saturday news conference in Jerusalem with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert.

After meeting with Abbas, Cheney was scheduled to talk with Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad, the BBC reported.

Brit Hume anchors report featuring more inflammatory rhetoric about Iran, except this time the Israeli representative is calling for "direct talks" and "sanctions" rather than military confrontation. An aside: Some of those video clips of missiles being tested look awfully familiar, don't they? I think I keep seeing them over and over again. I suppose it keeps the costs down.
JOHN MCCAIN: "If the Chinese want to block action in Darfur, we should act together, if the Russians want to continue to block action to stop the Iranians from developing nuclear weapons we should act together, and impose trade, economic, diplomatic, banking, financial, other sanctions on Iran to try to bring them around to stopping what they're doing. ISo, I would gather these nations, it may not be as formal as some other but I would get these nations together . . . major European financial institutions are extending unlimited lines of credit to Iran; obviously because they're gonna get paid back with oil. If we really put up severe, severe restrictions on Iran it might have some beneficial effect. At least it ought to be tried. The only way I think we're gonna be effective is without going to the UN Security Council."

TRANSCRIPT:
JOHN MCCAIN: ". . . the Iranians are doing many things based to some degree on their thousands of year old ambition of Persians to have a great influence in the Middle East. They are helping and arming training Shiite militias in Southern Iraq, they are sending some of the most lethal explosive devices . . . into Iraq that has taken into endangering the lives of young men and women in the armed forces . . . they have a president that announced his dedication to the extinction of . . . the state of Israel . . .they are proceeding to acquire a nuclear weapons capability . . . in the United Nations we continue to be blocked by Russia and, to a lesser extent, China in the Security Council in imposing meaningful sanctions . . . I believe we need a League of Democracies . . . if we enacted meaningful tough sanctions . . . I believe that it could have a beneficial effect . . . at the end of the day we cannot allow Iran to have nuclear weapons. But I am confident that, working together with nations of shared values . . . we can have a beneficial effect . . . if the Iranians acquire nuclear weapons, I think it's a very short time before other nations in the region will feel compelled to do so which then increases the issue of nuclear of proliferation dramatically."

TRANSCRIPT:
Questioner: "What can you do to assuage the fears that you may lead us into war with Iran?"

McCain: "Iran poses a great threat to American security and security in the Middle East, ranging from the fact that they are arming and training and equipping Jihadists, these Shiite militia's and sending them into southern Iraq as well as other parts to the fact that they are exporting these most lethal explosive devices that are killing young American service men and women. They are building nuclear weapons, their president has stated that the Holocaust didn't happen, and that he wants to, quote, "wipe Israel off the map, in his words."

UK and France table new sanctions despite IAEA report saying good progress with Iran

Sunday February 24th, 2008

After the report was circulated, Dr. ElBaradei made the following comments:

"Our task in Iran is to make sure that the Iranian nuclear programme is exclusively for peaceful purposes. We are at it for the last five years. In the last four months, in particular, we have made quite good progress in clarifying the outstanding issues that had to do with Iran´s past nuclear activities, with the exception of one issue, and that is the alleged weaponization studies that supposedly Iran has conducted in the past. We have managed to clarify all the remaining outstanding issues, including the most important issue, which is the scope and nature of Iran´s enrichment programme. We have made good progress, with still one issue on our agenda and I call on Iran to act as actively as possible, as fast as possible, for me to be able (to ensure) that all issues, that have to do with Iran´s past nuclear activities, have been clarified.

"In addition to our work, to clarify Iran´s past nuclear activities, we have to make sure, naturally, that Iran´s current activities are also exclusively for peace purposes and for that we have been asking Iran to conclude the so called Additional Protocol, which gives us the additional authority to visit places, additional authority to have additional documents, to be able to provide assurance, not only that Iran´s declared activities are for peaceful purposes but that there are no undeclared nuclear activities. On that score, Iran in the last few months has provided us with visits to many places, that enable us to have a clearer picture of Iran´s current programme. However, that is not, in my view, sufficient. We need Iran to implement the Additional Protocol. We need to have that authority as a matter of law. That, I think, is a key for us to start being able to build progress in providing assurance that Iran´s past and current programmes are exclusively for peaceful purposes. So we have the Protocol issue and we have the weaponization, alleged weaponization studies. I should however add that in connection with the weaponization studies, we have not seen any indication that these studies were linked to nuclear material. So that gives us some satisfaction but the issue is still critical for us to be able to come to a determination as to the nature of Iran´s nuclear programme.

"As a result of Iran running an undeclared nuclear programme for almost two decades, there has been confidence deficit on the part of the international community about the intentions, future intentions of Iran´s nuclear programme. Therefore the Security Council asked Iran to suspend its enrichment-related activities. I hope that Iran will continue to work closely with the Security Council, to create the conditions for Iran and the international community to engage in comprehensive negotiation that would lead to a durable solution. A durable solution requires confidence about Iran´s nuclear programme, it requires a regional security arrangement, it requires normal trade relationship between Iran and the international community. As the Security Council stated, the ultimate aim should be normalization of relationships between Iran and the international community. Definitely the Agency will continue to do as much as we can to make sure that we also contribute to the confidence-building process with regard to the past and present nuclear activities in Iran, but naturally, we can not provide assurance about future intentions. That is inherently a diplomatic process that needs the engagement of all the parties."

Iran says their development of nuclear power is strictly peaceful. The U.S. disagrees. America has gained a surprising new ally on the Security Council - France. But Iran has two Security Council allies - Russia and China - guaranteeing a veto of new UN sanctions. This week's episode features news coverage about the issue by national broadcast networks of key Security Council member nations.

More: linktv.org
