This song anticipated the wild ride of California's governorship that has brought us to the current Californicator. With Obama already bearing the brunt of racist reactions, the Tom Bradley campaign in California is significant. Tom Bradley, the popular mayor of Los Angeles was running double digit leads for governor in the polls. Deukmajian ran a political ad that was incredibly simple: they just put the pictures of Deukmajian and Bradley (a black man) next to each other and ask "Who do you really want?" According to a Wikipedia note, "The discrepancy between the polling numbers and the election's ultimate results would come to be termed "the Bradley effect," which refers to the tendency of white voters to tell interviewers or pollsters that they are undecided or likely to vote for a black candidate, but then actually vote for his opponent." Al Campanis was the beloved general manager of the LA Dodgers who was forced to resign after an absurd comment that blacks were not good swimmers because they "weren't as bouyant." Racist stereotypes are still rampant and destructive. The rest of the Duke's hypocrisies are fairly self-explanatory.

Well, we both escaped, no thanks to them.

Well, if you think the world is a mystery,
Then you ought to learn a little history.
Find the facts—open up your mind;
If you want to see the future,
You gotta’ look behind.
The one outstanding feature
Of the preacher and the teacher
Is what Cummings called
The “shrill collective Myth”;
That is, the lies we tell ourselves...
About ourselves...
To make ourselves
Feel better about ourselves.
Haven’t you ever wondered
Why they call it “His story”?

Now they tell the one about
Adam in the garden:
He was diggin' in the dirt
And beggin’ God’s pardon
When along came Eve
And opened up his eyes;

It’ll make you healthy and wise.”
And she was right,
So Adam took a bite,
But when God did come
(FEE-FI-FO-FUM),

And the times moved on,

Then, out of nowhere,
A movement began,
And women were demanding
The rights of man.

And somehow prevailed.
In 1920 they could finally vote—

But men saw their chance
And invented the sweatshop—
Worked women and their kids
Till they both would drop.

Of course, logic led quickly to Roe v. Wade,
But the Pope and other preachers
Were alarmed and dismayed,
(Not to mention afraid)
’Cause a powerless woman
Meant he had it made,
But if she rose up,
Then his power would fade.

After all of these years
Of raising her voice,
A woman finally found
That she had the choice
To decide for herself
When or if to give birth,
And millions of women
Have known what that’s worth.
But those men who lost
Both a maid and a slave
Have their own idea
Of how she should behave:
“Get her out of the man’s world
And back in the home;
Remove all her pills,
IUD’s, and her foam,
And outlaw abortion,
Take her choices away!
Give her rights to the fetus.
Praise the Lord! Let us pray...

Finally come to their senses

This is the full song. The partial spoken recitation of this song received the most angry and vitriolic comments of any of my videos on YouTube. Let's see how the full song is received. As I said to several of my detractors, Google Grenada and you will find that most historical accounts acknowledge Reagan's invasion of Grenada as a "wag the dog" attempt to deflect his deadly failure in Lebanon by waging war under false pretenses. This little excursion really was the dress rehearsal for the attacks on Noriega in Panama by Bush One and Saddam Hussein in Iraq by both Bushes. It's important to remember that both Noriega and Hussein were clients of American presidents, "friends" of Reagan, Bush, Rumsfeld, & Cheney! The Marxist revolution in Grenada was a natural target as an extension of the Reagan fueled Contra wars in Nicaragua and El Salvador—just the kind of mixing in neighbor's politics that was used as an excuse to attack Saddam.

The brilliant comedian and satirist George Carlin died yesterday, and one of the bits they ran for his obit. paralleled the line in this song about the Christians, Hindus, Muslims, and Jews. Like minds...

"They Talk to God" is the song I sang to Randall Terry and his Operation Rescue acolytes on the LAPD bus for those arrested during the onslaught against Los Angeles abortion clinics. I was the only Pro-Choice activist arrested that day (wrongfully arrested, I might add), and my song shut down the "party" on the bus. A more complete version of that day is available in my book, "Tim McMullen: Aged Fifty Years...A Life in Song."

Back in early 2003 the three of us got together to see if we could figure out something to write that would express some of the outrage and feelings of going crazy we had about what was going on around Iraq.

Here we were living in the most powerful country on earth, which had bombed the shit out of a relatively poor and weak country, Iraq, devastating its roads, electricity, drinking water; then proceeded to impose sanctions that resulted in half a million civilian deaths from starvation and lack of medical supplies and facilities, then, using the pretext that because some Arabs from several other completely different countries killed 3000 Americans (that’s 1/150 of the Iraqis we had killed in the previous ten years), we bombed the shit out of Iraq AGAIN, and everyone… virtually every journalist attached to anything even remotely mainstream, every politician, every movie star, every everyone was talking about how great and heroic it all was, and we just said, you know, “Fuck This!”

So we wrote this thing that said, this is all lies. None of this is about freedom or democracy. It’s about money and power. We thought the lies these bastards had blanketed the world in were so blatant and outrageous that it would be inappropriate to respond to them with anything that wasn’t derisively absurd. Because the idea that we were expected to swallow all that shit was absurd and insultingly derisive to our intelligences and those of everyone on the planet.

So we wrote it. And the people with money didn’t see a way to make a profit on it so we got someone to make it in Bulgaria for a fraction of what we really needed. But we made it anyway. And we got great, talented people to work on it and be in it for practically nothing, and now it’s done. And we love it. And lots of other folks love it. And we hope you love it.
