Kiribati — We chased it for 5 days, but as dawn broke over the Pacific this morning we finally confronted the biggest tuna fishing vessel in the world. The Spanish-owned and flagged tuna purse seiner "Albatun Tres" is known as a 'super, super seiner' and can net 3,000 tonnes of tuna in a single fishing trip. This is almost double the entire annual catch of some Pacific island countries.

Complete video at: fora.tv

Kemal Derviş, Head of the United Nations Development Programme, discusses impacts of climate change on long-term economic planning.

-----

Prosperity and Inequality: Debates in India and China Keynote Address by Kemal Dervis

India and China are emerging as major players in the global political economy of this century, having enjoyed record growth rates for the past five years. Yet each faces major social and economic challenges. Both countries are dealing with growing social unrest, widespread poverty, and rising energy needs in a world market shaped by dwindling oil supplies.

China's growth is creating massive disparities between its urban and rural sectors, resulting in protests against state authority and restless migrant populations. Citizens face a steady degradation of public health due to runaway industrial growth, while capitalists chafe against the state's tight control of the market. In India, the epidemic of suicides among farmers and episodes of violence against minorities have cast doubts on the benefits of wholesale economic liberalization, unfettered foreign investment, and growth, which are also being challenged by the rise of judicial activism and of an active, vocal civil society.

The India China Institute at The New School, now in its third year of sponsoring fellowships, public debates, and research collaborations between experts in India, China, and the United States, is hosting "Prosperity and Inequality: Debates in India and China," a major conference exploring these issues. Participants in the conference, including our own fellows from all three countries as well as experts on urbanization, globalization, and growth in India and China, will discuss Chinese and Indian urbanization and wealth formation, the social and political risks associated with skyrocketing growth in two massive agrarian societies, alternative designs for development in each society, and the quest in both societies for a "third way" of development that combines the virtues of socialism and capitalism without sacrificing democracy and grassroots inclusion - The New School

Kemal Derviş started as the new head of the United Nations Development Program, the UN's global development network, on August 15, 2005. Currently he also serves as the Chair of the United Nations Development Group (UNDP), a committee consisting of the heads of all UN funds, programs, and departments working on development issues.

Prior to his appointment with UNDP, Mr. Derviş was a member of the Turkish Parliament, representing Istanbul from November 2002 to June 2005. From March 2001 to August 2002, he was the Minister for Economic Affairs and the Treasury of the Republic of Turkey. In August of 2002, he resigned from his Ministerial post and was elected to Parliament.

Apr 15 - It's a scene found nowhere else on earth...an enormous orca riding a wave close to shore for a sneak attack. The dangerous hunting technique could leave them beached out of water too long to survive.Katharine Jackson reports.

Complete video at: fora.tv

Celebrity geneticist Craig Venter discusses the enormous diversity of microbial life existing in our global oceans.

-----

Joining 3.5 Billion Years of Microbial Invention featuring biologist J. Craig Venter.

Biologist, author and businessman Craig Venter discusses his work mapping and synthesizing genomes. Venter recalls his work mapping the human genome and expands on his current work which includes categorizing new genes and species of microbes from ocean water. Venter also explains how microbial research can be used for metabolic engineering and alternative energy sources.

J. Craig Venter, PH.D. is regarded as one of the leading scientists of the 21st century for his contributions to genomic research and is one of the country’s most frequently cited scientists. He is Founder and President of the J. Craig Venter Institute and J. Craig Venter Science Foundation, not-for-profit research and support organizations dedicated to human genomic research, exploration of social and ethical issues in genomics, and alternative energy solutions through microbial sources. He is also the Founder and Chairman of the Institute for Genomic Research (TIGR).

Dr. Venter began his formal education after serving as a Navy Corpsman in Danang, Vietnam from 1967 to 1968. After earning a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry and a Ph.D. in physiology and pharmacology, both from the University of California at San Diego and both in three years, he was appointed professor at the State University of New York at Buffalo and the Roswell Park Cancer Institute. In 1984, he moved to the National Institutes of Health, where he developed expressed-sequence tags (ESTs), a revolutionary strategy for gene discovery. In 1992, he founded TIGR, where he and his team decoded the genome of the first free-living organism, the bacterium Haemophilus influenzae, using an original whole-genome shotgun technique. Since then, TIGR has sequenced more than 50 genomes using Dr. Venter's techniques.

Dr. Venter is the author of more than 200 articles and the recipient of numerous honorary degrees, public honors, and scientific awards, including the Financial Times Man of the Year Award, TIME Magazine Man of the Year (runner up), 2002 Gairdner Foundation International Award, and the 2001 Paul Ehrlich and Ludwig Darmstaedter Prize. Dr. Venter is a member of numerous prestigious scientific organizations including, including the National Academy of Sciences, American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and American Society for Microbiology. He was also one of the first 38 people to be selected by Desmond Tutu as part of the "Hands That Shape Humanity" world exhibition.

Dr. Venter's autobiography A Life Decoded was published in October of 2007.

This year's Japanese whaling fleet plans to kill hundreds of whales in the name of "research." But, not if environmental groups like Greenpeace and The Sea Shepherd have anything to say about it. So far they have tried several tactics to thwart the harvest they believe is for commercial whaling, a practice that was outlawed in 1986 by the International Whaling Commission. Watch as we show you world wide opinions on this battle in the Antarctica.

On board an inflatable running parallel to the giant factory ship, Greenpeace Japan whales campaigner Sakyo Noda held the Japanese kanji symbol "偽" ("nise"), meaning "fake", next to the word "RESEARCH" which has been painted by the Japanese Fisheries Agency on the Nishim Maru's hull.
Reflecting a growing disquiet in Japanese society, "偽" was voted the best kanji symbol of the year for 2008. Its choice reflects recent food mislabeling scandals, problems over political funds and faulty pension records.
Greenpeace Japan is now using it to show that the use of taxpayers money to fund "scientific" whaling is yet another government scandal.

Greenpeace is competing in the Facebook Cause Competition and we need your help NOW!

The Cause with the most donors in a 24 hour period (from 3pm to 3 pm EST) each day will win $1,000, and the Cause with the largest number of donors by February 1st will also win $50,000. Help us get there!

http://weblog.greenpeace.org/whales/2008/01/hydrophone_test.html#more

We were offline all day yesterday; otherwise you would have been able to spot some the pretty spectacular icebergs on the webcam! Yesterday we tried out the hydrophone which can record whales under water. Together with Jetske, Gavin and Neil I have worked on finding the ideal way to place and deploy it from the boats. I worked with hydrophones in Brazil previously, but with another and simpler kind. There are few recordings of whales from the Southern Ocean, and I am very keen on recording whales here. This hydrophone can record from longer distances, but we also work under radically different circumstances than in Brazil. We have put heavier weights on the hydrophone, and it would be possible to record even if the boat would travel at a speed of 15 knots.
Here is a video that explains how the hydrophone works. As you can see by the t-shirts it was made before we reached these cold waters!

More:

Maybe you have some whale fluke pictures lying around? There is a group on Flickr that collects pictures of whale flukes from the Atlantic or the Pacific:
