Cato Institute Vice President David Boaz gives his opinion about colleague Robert Levy and the Supreme Court decision of Heller v. District of Columbia.

A key figure in the libertarian movement, Boaz surveys what he sees as the threats to freedom from the Bush administration and the current presidential candidates.

Though he is frustrated with many of the candidates' positions, he remains optimistic about the future of civil and economic liberties.

But he says that the future of freedom requires that Americans devote considerable effort to preserving and protecting these rights - The Commonwealth Club of California

Cato's executive vice president David Boaz has played a key role in the development of the Cato Institute and the libertarian movement. He is a provocative commentator and a leading authority on domestic issues such as education choice, drug legalization, the growth of government, and the rise of libertarianism. He is the author of Libertarianism: A Primer, described by the Los Angeles Times as "a well-researched manifesto of libertarian ideas," the editor of The Libertarian Reader, and coeditor of the Cato Handbook on Policy.

Boaz is the former editor of New Guard magazine and was executive director of the Council for a Competitive Economy prior to joining Cato in 1981. His articles have been published in the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Los Angeles Times, National Review, and Slate. He is a frequent guest on national television and radio shows, and has appeared on ABC's Politically Incorrect with Bill Maher, CNN's Crossfire, NPR's Talk of the Nation and All Things Considered, John McLaughlin's One on One, Fox News Channel, BBC, Voice of America, Radio Free Europe, and other media.

JOHN MCCAIN: "I think [gun ownership] is a constitutional right. I think it's a very important constitutional right - the second amendment. I would hope the United States Supreme Court uphold every individual's 2nd amendment rights, that is the right to own a weapon. So, I can understand why so many of us have weighed in and I'm one of those who did as well. I think it's a fundamental question of constitutional rights."

MCCAIN: "But the clear meaning of the Second Amendment has not stopped those who want to punish firearms owners -- and those who make and sell firearms -- for the actions of criminals. It seems like every time there is a particularly violent crime, the anti-gun activists demand yet another restriction on the Second Amendment. I opposed the ban on so-called "assault weapons," which was first proposed after a California schoolyard shooting. It makes no sense to ban a class of firearms based on cosmetic features. I have opposed waiting periods for gun purchases."

I do believe in protecting the constitutional rights ensured by the 2nd amendment of the constitution. I will continue to support that. All I can say is that I will provide whatever support that I can to the law enforcement agencies to provide training, equipment, the ability to track down people and frankly I also supported very strong mandatory sentences for crimes committed with a weapon.

The Second Amendment isn't some archaic custom that matters only to rural Americans, who find solace in firearms out of frustration with their economic circumstances. The Second Amendment is unique in the world. It guarantees an individual right to keep and bear arms. To argue anything else is to reject the clear meaning of our Founding Fathers."
