Journalist Richard Ackland argues that many religious leaders encourage people to blindly follow their beliefs, which can lead to ignorant, and even dangerous decisions.

-----

While the world's religions have inspired stunning acts of creation, they also have been implicated in some of the darkest deeds in human history.

If God cannot be blamed for such moments of evil, His priests and prophets at least have a case to answer.

So what might they say? That religion is unfairly blamed -- and that we should look to other factors? Admit that there are problems but argue that on balance the good outweighs the bad? That there is no alternative; that people need religion like they need air? - Intelligence Squared

Richard Ackland is a prominent columnist for The Sydney Morning Herald writing on legal and ethical issues. He is founder of Law Press of Australia, whose publications include The Justinian and The Gazette of Law and Journalism. Ackland has been a staunch advocate of free speech and was co-winner of the prestigious Gold Walkley for Journalism in 1999 following work as writer and presenter of the ABC's Media Watch program. Ackland has also presented ABC Radio National's breakfast program, covering a range of issues and controversies. In 2000 he was awarded the Voltaire Prize for Free Speech.

AIDS activist Mechai "Mr. Condom" Viravaidya discusses several "out-of-the-box" methods for promoting condom distribution and safe-sex practices in his native Thailand.

-----

Mechai Viravaidya, politician and founder of the Population and Community Development Association in Thailand, discusses his innovative techniques for promoting birth control in the face of overpopulation and the AIDS epidemic.

He also talks about his efforts to build economies in rural villages in order to promote health and education. - Chautauqua Institution

Mechai Viravaidya, popularly known as "Mr. Condom" in his native Thailand, was recently awarded the 2007 Gates Award for Global Health on behalf of The Population and Community Development Association (PDA), the organization he founded in 1974. For over 30 years, PDA has helped improve lives and strengthen communities in Thailand through HIV prevention and family planning programs that have become international models. A health economist by training, Viravaidya is best known for his use of humor and unorthodox methods in focusing the public's attention on public health. The programs developed by Viravaidya and PDA led to a dramatic reduction in new HIV infections in Thailand, from 143,000 in 1991 to 21,000 in 2003.

Using a nationwide network of village-based volunteers, PDA empowers women to plan their pregnancies, giving both mothers and children the opportunity to live healthier lives. PDA's comprehensive approach to poverty reduction also addresses income generation, water resource development, sanitation projects, environmental conservation, and promotion of gender equality and democracy.

Today, PDA's 600 employees and more than 12,000 volunteers work in 18 regional development centers and branch offices throughout Thailand. Through its international training program, PDA has trained 2,900 people from 50 countries in innovative approaches to HIV prevention, family planning, adolescent reproductive health and other issues.

The outcome of the US presidential election is of keen interest to people in Africa.

One of the biggest challenges that the US has tried to take on is the HIV/Aids epidemic.

Despite previous successes, Aids infections are growing in Uganda, and some say a shift towards US-backed abstinence programmes are having an effect.

Greetings Fans & Friends,

Here's a never-before-released video of my song "Sexuality". The video was directed by Kevin Godley, a founding member of the band 10cc. Giorgio Armani commissioned "Sexuality" for his worldwide fragrance campaign and the track is on my Wildlife Dictionary album. You can also listen to the song in its entirety on my Musicians Page at www.facebook.com

Right now, I'm spending a lot of time in and out of the studio preparing my new album for release next year so my video activity may slow down in the month of August. Stay tuned - I have 25 more great videos to come.

Best Wishes,

Complete video at: fora.tv

Advice columnists Dan Savage and Amy Richards argue that abstinence-only sex education does not adequately instruct teens on the realities of sexual health. This program contains sexually explicit language.

-----

In the July 18th, 2004 issue of The New York Times Magazine, feminist activist Amy Richards gave her account of deciding to undergo "selective reduction." The procedure reduces the number of fetuses carried by a pregnant woman - in Richards' case, from triplets to one baby.

Her controversial choice reignited debates about reproductive freedom and the ethics of choice. Richards recounts the backlash of the article and the many challenges of raising her son in Opting In: Having a Child Without Losing Yourself. Richards is co-founder of The Third Wave Foundation and has written feminist.com's advice column "Ask Amy" since 1995.

Internationally-syndicated columnist Dan Savage dispenses with taboos when writing about sex and relationships. Since 1991, his column "Savage Love" has offered advice that examines and dispels conservative models of love, sex, and family.

With great humor, Savage encourages a "good, giving, and game" approach to safe sexual experimentation and skepticism of "simplistic" views of monogamy. Dan Savage is also a contributor to "This American Life" and editorial director of The Stranger, the Seattle weekly that first published his popular column.

His book The Kid relates Savage's experiences adopting a baby boy with his partner. The Commitment: Love, Sex, Marriage, and My Family, his memoir of family, includes Savage's commentary on the gay marriage debate - City Arts and Lectures

Daniel Savage is an American sex advice columnist, author, media pundit, journalist, and newspaper editor. Savage is best known for penning the internationally syndicated relationship and sex advice column Savage Love. Its tone is humorous, profane, and often hostile to social conservatives, as in the Santorum controversy.

Savage has often been the subject of controversy regarding his opinions that pointedly clash with both traditional conservative moral values and those put forth by what Savage has been known to call the "gay establishment".

Advice columnists Amy Richards and Dan Savage discuss what they see as frequent misunderstandings about issues of feminism and abortion.

The Commitment: Love, Sex, Marriage, and My Family, his memoir of family, includes Savage's commentary on the gay marriage debate - City Arts & Lectures
