Hersh: Congress Agreed to Bush Request to Fund Major Escalation in Secret Operations Against Iran

Congressional leaders agreed to a request from President Bush last year to fund a major escalation of covert operations against Iran aimed at destabilizing Iran's leadership, according to a new article by veteran investigative journalist Seymour Hersh in the New Yorker magazine. The operations were set out in a highly classified Presidential Finding signed by Bush which, by law, must be made known to Democratic and Republican leaders. The plan allowed up to $400 million in covert spending for activities ranging from supporting dissident groups to spying on Iran's nuclear program. Hersh joins us from Washington DC.

Investigative journalist Seymour Hersh discussed Israel's bombing of a (possibly nuclear) site and his New Yorker piece, "A Strike in the Dark...What Did Israel Bomb?" As usual, I took my patented, award-winning, internationally acclaimed quick notes:

Sy Hersh:

We don't know. There was no previous history. Nobody says anything public about it--an act of war in the Middle East and nobody's talking about it--paying attention to it.

Something was under construction with North Korean help. There was no clear statement from the Damascus regime.

The reality is, Israel's and the United States' quotes fall apart. The bottom line: I may have overwhelming evidence, but without it, they just bombed another country, but nothing nuclear was there.

North Koreans were at the target.

Israel is adamant that there was something nuclear there. Syria says Israel bombed with tacit approval from the U.S. There's a double standard there.

My best guess: They were building a missile plant, it was not built yet, it was under construction. Reports say it was unlikely that it was a nuclear facility. My best guess, it was a military facility and North Koreans were there. So Israel sent a "let's go hit" message to Iran that "we are coming".

Bottom line: The world responded shockingly little to this. Where is the world outcry? We can't have this happen.

Oh, and another reason why Democrats who voted for the Kyl-Lieberman Let's Start A War With Iran Amendment are such imbeciles...Sy Hersh's new piece lays it all out.

Much like we needed to go to war with Iraq because of WMD and then Al Qaeda and then Bush's daddy and then democracy, etc., the sales pitch for war with Iran is now morphing from nukes into terrorism by Iran in Iraq.

They are "attacking our soldiers" is the line now, so we can fudge evidence claiming it is those newly designated terrorists, the Revolutionary Guard, and voila we have a land war instead of just a boring air war!

But we don't have the troops you say? Why that's what the Blackwater mercs and our taxes are for! And they'll stay loyal to President Decider Guy, and not that silly Constitution. Not to mention, profiteers/GOP donors can then pocket even more ill-begotten profits.

Sy Hersh: The sales pitch on Iran has morphed from nukes to terrorism.

Seymour Hersh was on CNN today. He has a new piece coming out in the New Yorker tomorrow. Here are my patented, award-winning quick notes on what he said, somewhat paraphrased, but including many direct quotes:

The rhetoric of the administration has changed. They're not selling Iran as a nuclear threat any more. They switched to the message that Iran is fueling sectarian violence and killing U.S. and British forces in Iraq.
They are at least 5 years away from having nukes. It's going nowhere.
The administration has gone from selling bombing the infrastructure to payback for hitting U.S. troops. Now they're pitching surgical hits across the Iran border, which is a targeting change. Now, instead of nukes, we're going to get the guys who are killing our boys.
"There is an increase in the tempo of attack planning". The CIA is ramping up its Iranian Operations Group, just like before the Iraq invasion.
The National Security Council is now focused more on attacking Iran-- way more.
Dana Perino says we're taking diplomatic measures. But they are planning more limited surgical strikes with carefully drawn-up plans for attack. The Brits and Australia are more interested now. Israel wants us to go and go hit hard, to take out the Revolutionary Guard and the nuclear facilities.
Now it is a counter-proliferation mission, striking the Revolutionary Guard. Now it is counter-terrorism. This is more sellable. We're only getting the guys who are killing our boys, so the world won't scream at us.
Cheney is devoted to bombing and short, sharp incursions, ground strikes with Special Operations forces.
If we do go in, we have to go in on the ground, too. Marines will have to go in.
The screw-up in Iraq made Iran more powerful.

As usual, Sy Hersh puts it all into perspective for us. I just wish he'd be wrong once in awhile.
