Bestselling science-fiction author William Gibson reads an excerpt from his novel, "Spook Country."

-----

William Gibson discusses "Spook Country."

William Gibson has long been recognized as a literary pioneer with an eye for technological and social change. From his 1984 debut novel "Neuromancer", in which he envisioned both the Internet and virtual reality before either existed, to his most recent novel, "Pattern Recognition", which probed cultural changes in the US since 9/11, Gibson has repeatedly demonstrated a unique ability to see the odd shapes, bulges, and empty spaces created by information as it leaks out, indicators of events of extreme weirdness and secrecy.

His exploration of our chaotic present continues in "Spook Country", a contemporary novel of political paranoia. - Cody's Books

William Ford Gibson is an American-born science fiction author who has been called the father of the cyberpunk subgenre of science fiction, partly due to coining the term "cyberspace" in 1982, and partly because of the success of his first novel, "Neuromancer," which has sold more than 6.5 million copies worldwide since its publication in 1984.

Former New Jersey Governor James McGreevey discusses his self-identification as a "gay American."

-----

Former New Jersey governor, James McGreevey, makes a highly anticipated appearance in San Francisco to discuss his new memoir, "The Confession." The former governor discusses personal recollections of his political rise and fall, his spirituality, and his lifelong struggle to come to terms with the sexual identity he kept secret for years.

McGreevey's new book traces his life through two failed marriages, his rapid political rise to the governor's office, and the sudden, public implosion of his political career. Governor McGreevey made history in August 2004 when he declared, "I am a gay American" on national television, and announced his resignation from office. The story made headlines worldwide - but what led to that moment was a human and political drama more complex and fascinating than anyone could know.

Moderator for the evening is Dudley Clendinen, New York Times contributor and co-author, "Out for Good: The Struggle to Build a Gay Rights Movement in America." This event consists of a conversation between McGreevey and Clendinen, followed by Q&A from the audience. The event, part of the "TimesTalks" Speaker Series, is co-presented by The New York Times and The San Francisco Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Community Center.

Mark Fainaru-Wada and Lance Williams, investigative reporters and co-authors of the book "Game of Shadows," discuss Barry Bonds, steroids, and the current state of professional baseball.

-----

"Beyond BALCO" with Mark Fainaru-Wada and Lance Williams. Marty Lurie moderates.

With the weight of a prison sentence off their shoulders, Fainaru-Wada and Williams open up about their role in the BALCO steroid case that rocked pro sports. They also discuss the balance between California's shield law and the public's right to know, and the state of performance-enhancing drugs in sports. -- The Commonwealth Club of California

Mark Fainaru-Wada and Lance Williams are reporters for the San Francisco Chronicle and co-authors of the book "Game of Shadows," which chronicles baseball slugger Barry Bonds' alleged steroid use.

On May 5, 2006, Fainaru-Wada and Williams were subpoenaed to testify before a federal grand jury about how they obtained Bonds' leaked grand jury testimony. On May 31, the authors urged United States District Judge Martin Jenkins of San Francisco to excuse them from testifying. This appeal was supported by affidavits from Washington Post reporters Carl Bernstein and Mark Corallo, a former press secretary to former Attorney General John Ashcroft, but was denied on August 15, 2006.

On Sept 21, 2006, the journalists were sentenced to 18 months in prison for contempt of court. The two have repeatedly stated that they would go to prison before revealing their sources. The two avoided jail time, however, when attorney Troy Ellerman pleaded guilty on Feb. 14, 2007, to leaking the information, lying to prosecutors, obstructing justice and disobeying a court order not to disclose grand jury information.
