The McCain-Palin ticket has developed an interesting campaign strategy. They don’t want the public to see their plans to dismantle Social Security, Medicare, and the system of employer-provided health care. To distract people from these policies that will directly affect their lives they are taking politics to new lows.

Among the highlights for the cesspool two is the nonsense that Senator Obama was calling Governor Palin a barnyard animal when he used the old expression “putting lipstick on a pig.” Then Senator McCain told us that he approved of an ad calling Senator Obama a sexual pervert.

These two are happy to throw out any sort of vile lie because the more time the media and the public spend focusing on this garbage, the less time they will have to notice that Senator McCain wants to privatize and cut their Social Security. Senator McCain thinks that America’s workers have it too easy when they retire. He wants them to retire later and have less money when they do.

John McCain Wants to Privatize Social Security

The Republicans have already turned to sick sexual innuendo and nonsense about their vice-presidential candidate, pigs, and lipstick in order to distract the public from the real issues in this campaign. One of the items that should be on the top of the list of real issues is Senator McCain’s plans to privatize and cut Social Security.

Senator McCain has repeatedly expressed interest in privatizing Social Security along the lines proposed by President Bush. For those who have forgotten that nightmare, President Bush’s plan would have reduced benefits by approximately 1 percent a year for many workers.

Workers who retire 10 years after the plan is put in place would have seen a 10 percent reduction in benefits compared with the currently projected levels. Workers who retire 20 years after the plan is implemented would see approximately a 20 percent cut in benefits and workers who retire 40 years later would see their benefits cut by close to 40 percent.

The idea that social security may soon fall into bankruptcy is just another Republican scare tactic. The programme is sound.

Senator McCain can't remember how many homes he owns, but that shouldn't distract voters from the fact that he wants to take away their social security. It is striking to find an adult who has to get help in counting his homes, but that really is less important than the policies that McCain would try to implement if he were elected president.

ISAACSON: This is the 73rd anniversary of Social Security... you called the funding mechanism a disgrace recently. How would you change it?

MCCAIN: ... It's a pay as you go system. [...] As you know, we have the trustees of the Social Security system. And they are the people appointed to give us an evaluation every year of the condition of Social Security... and the trustees have stated repeatedly, and David Walker, who now works for the coalition, who was once head of the government accountability office, I think is the best talking about this. There's gonna come a time, and there's argument about when that year is, but it's not that far away. When there's more money goin out than comin in. And when there's no money left. [...] The situation today is that younger workers who are contributing to the system, the way it was designed, will not receive the same benefits as present day retirees. That's not fair. [...] The approval rating of Congress is at 9%. [...] Congress is at a gridlock on everything [...] One of our earliest memories was 1983, Ronald Reagan and Tip O'Neil, the liberal democrat from Massachussetts,[...] And Ronald Reagan sat down together with the benefit of a Greenspan study. And they said "Okay, we're gonna fix social security." And they walked out in the rose garden, stood next to each other. It may not have been the solution that I wanted, [...] or anyone else, but it was a solution, and we saved Social Security for about 25 or 30 years. It was about to go bankrupt. Now, why can't we do that again? [...] It isn't that complicated. [...] Medicare is complicated, my friends, [...] Social security- there have been study after study after study-

ISAACSON: But shouldn't it be like the energy policy, where everything is on the table, we do a little of everything?

MCCAIN: Yes, and as you know, I am opposed to tax increases [...] I think we can fix this without it. Am I am confident that I can convince the people on the other side of the table that we do not need tax increases.

QUESTIOENER: I actually have two questions, the first question is, as a young, hardworking American, I am actually paying in to a Social Security system that I'm not going to reap the benefits from. [applause] What is your proposal to help young Americans, like myself, who are paying into a system but are probably not going to get the benefits as the system is now?

JOHN MCCAIN: Thank you. I should've recognized the guy behind you. [laughter] Let, let, let me just say to you: you are exactly right. And, as I said, sometimes we have to have straight talk in America. The Social Security benefits that are presently there for present day retirees will not be there when you retire, if we don't fix the system. [applause] And, my friends, that's just a fact. And we have to face up to it and we have to face up to our obligation. Not just to present generations of retirees but future generations. If there's ever a compelling argument for Republican and Democrat to sit down and work on this issue, it is the issue of Social Security. Why should we lay a multi-trillion dollar debt on this young American and the other young people in this audience? [applause] Why should we do that? Why should we do that? So, let me, let me if I could, just remind you, you know, Tom and I came to congress together. And, I was proud to make the friendship of the only other Viet Nam veteran in our incoming class. In case you didn—many of you don't remember, he graduated from Harvard and easily could've gotten a deferment. But instead, he chose to go as an enlisted person and fight in the war in Viet Nam. [applause] And, when we came, when we first, and when we first came to congress together, Social Security was on the brink of bankruptcy. It was about to go broke. I mean it was out of money. So what happened? Tip O'Neil, the speaker of the house, the liberal Democrat from Massachusetts and Ronald Reagan, the, uh, conservative from California, came together, armed with a study by Alan Greenspan, and they walked outside and stood in the Rose Garden together and said, "We're going to work together and fix Social Security." And they did for about 25 or 30 years. My friends, we have an example of what needs to be done. It's not going to be invented by me and Joe Lieberman, it's going to something that the Americans want us to badly do. And I'm going to tell you, my young friend, I understand my obligation to you and your generation. I understand it so well that I believe it's a major and compelling reason for me to be President of the United States and we will fix Social Security and we'll do it in a bipartisan fashion.

Mi abuelo, Fraklin Delano Roosevelt, y la mayoría de los estaudonidenses sabían que eso no estaba bien. Ellos creían que sacar de la pobreza a personas de la tercera edad era reflección de los valores de nuestra nación.

Por eso, hace 73 años hoy, mi abuelo firmó el proyecto de ley del Seguro Social, uno de los triunfos más grandes del siglo XX. El Seguro Social asegura el bienestar de 13 millones de personas de la tercera edad y 1,3 millones de niños.

En 1935, una pequeña minoría no compartía esos valores. Ellos se oponían a la creación del Seguro Social por que ellos creían que el gobierno no debería jugar un papel en asegurar una jubilación digna o ayudar a las personas de la tercera edad para que no cayeran en la pobreza. Esta pequeña minoría decía que "le queda a cada cual arreglase su propio futuro."

"My grandfather, Franklin Delano Roosevelt and a majority of Americans thought that was wrong.

"They believed that lifting our seniors out of poverty is a reflection of our nation's core values.

"That's why my grandfather signed the Social Security act seventy three years ago today. One of the great successes of the 20th Century, today Social Security lifts nearly 13 million seniors and 1.3 million children out of poverty.

"Back in 1935, a small minority did not share those values. They opposed the creation of Social Security because they believed that government should not have a role in ensuring a retirement with dignity or helping seniors stay out of poverty. They said, "You're on your own".

"John McCain agrees with that old way of thinking. Like President Bush, he wants to privatize our Social Security, turning it into a gamble with our futures, and making 8.6 million American seniors vulnerable to poverty. John McCain has even said Social Security is "a disgrace".

"I couldn't disagree more.

"Our Social Security isn't a disgrace; it's a compact, a trust between generations of Americans. It's a reflection of our values.
