Besides rehearsal, he takes you to make up, the red carpet, back stage and finally the ballroom itself.</p> <p>We start our adventure in the backseat on the way to the Emmy Awards gala at which Sam prepares to perform. We're taken behind the scenes during rehearsal of his "Bridge Over Troubled Water". You get to see the process with the band and his backup singers, along with stage management.</p> <p>Sam gets into a tux for the walk down the red carpet. After wardrobe and makeup, he heads to the land of microphones. </p> <p>Cesar Millan (The Dog Whisperer), is the first celebrity we see. On his way to Jean Smart (Designing Women, 24) we see a glimpse of Michael Urie (Ugly Betty) and Kathy Griffin (Life on the D-List) while Sam sings "The Emmy (Lady) Is A Tramp" in the background (from the performance later that night). Also a shot of the beautiful Leslie Caron (A living legend from the MGM days!). Sam poses for paparazzi and is stopped for interviews, so the camera is the voyeur at this point. Emmie Liz is the tall redhead who pretty much looks like me and who the camera just seems to adore. The one who had a 102 degree fever the night of the performance but refused to sit out. Hughes is the New School's artist-in-residence for the 2007-8 academic year.</p> <p>Doug Hughes is an associate artist at Roundabout Theatre Company, where he recently directed Eugene O’Neill's A Touch of the Poet, Richard Greenberg's A Naked Girl on the Appian Way, Jon Robin Baitz' The Paris Letter and Stephen Belber's McReele. He is also the resident director at MCC Theater, where he directed Last Easter, Scattergood, Frozen, Anadarko and The Grey Zone (1996 Obie Award for Direction). </p> <p>For his work on Frozen, Hughes received Tony Award, Outer Critics Circle and Lortel nominations. Other recent work in New York includes Engaged at Theatre for a New Audience; Flesh and Blood (Callaway Award for Best Direction), The Beard of Avon and A Question of Mercy, all at NYTW; Othello (with Keith David and Liev Schreiber) at the Public; John Guare's Lake Hollywood at Signature and Doubt, Defiance and An Experiment with An Air Pump for Manhattan Theatre Club. For his work on Doubt, Hughes won the 2005 Tony Award for Best Direction of a Play. He also won the Lucille Lortel, Outer Critics, Drama Desk and Callaway Awards for the same production.
